Pretty awesome

"There once was a major Christian leader who advocated armed might to both stem the tide of an invading and quite bloody army as well as to protect individual Christians threatened by the same invaders. Almost a thousand years later, the warning largely attributed to philosopher Jorge Santyana still rings true: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

In arguably the truest form of religious ecumenism, in 1095 Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos appealed to Pope Bl. Urban II for the Western Church's assistance against the attacking Turks and Arabs, who'd taken nearly all the Byzantine lands in Asia Minor, the Near and Middle East. It was then that Blessed Urban II changed the course of world history by calling on all of the West's sovereigns no not only aid their Greek brethren, but to also liberate the Holy Lands captured by invading Muslim armies.

As reported by the Agence France-Presse via NewsMax.com, and also the new media Meduza.comportal of Latvia, both on Sept. 30, 2015, it certainly appears that everything old is new again.

In a curious change of leads, now it appears the Eastern Church is rescuing their Western counterparts. As reported, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church's (ROC) public affairs department, The Very Rev. Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin didn't exactly mince words when it came to where the ROC stands on troops from Mother Russia engaged in combat in Syria.

With Syria's sizable Christian minority being a favored target of murder, torture and kidnappings by Islamic jihadists such as al-Qaeda, ISIS and the al-Nusra Front, Fr. Chaplain stated, "The fight with terrorism is a holy battle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world fighting it." Verifying that Fr. Chaplain hadn't gone rouge, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus' and Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill (Cyril) said "Russia took a responsible decision to use military forces to protect the Syrian people from the woes brought on by the tyranny of terrorists."

His Holiness also noted that he considers armed intervention needed since "the political process has not led to any noticeable improvement in the lives of innocent people, and they need military protection." Patriarch Kirill's call is eerily reminiscent of Blessed Urban's shaming a millenia ago of initially weak-kneed Western kings and princes:

Go, brothers, go with hope to the fight against the enemies of God, who for so long have dominated Syria, Armenia and the countries of Asia Minor. They have already committed many outrages.

They have taken the Sepulcher of Christ and the marvelous monuments of our Faith; they have forbidden pilgrims to set foot in a city whose worth only Christians can truly appreciate. Are these facts not sufficient to upset the serenity of your faces?

Critical of Western ecclesiastical and secular leaders inability (or possible unwillingness) for swift and final action against Syria's various Islamic jihadis, the editorial staff of The Catholic Herald (of London, UK) rhetorically asked on Sept. 30, 2015, "Will Russia’s ‘holy war’ save Syria’s Christians?" With a more than a slightly pointed quill, the Catholic Herald noted, "For example, the rebel group al-Nusra Front, one of the players in the region Russia is now pounding, previously overran the Christian village of Maaloula, 40 miles north of Damascus, executing three Christians and kidnapping a dozen nuns before being driven out by the Syrian army.

During the battle for that village one Christian addressed the BBC cameraman with these chilling words: 'Tell the Europeans and the Americans that we sent you St Paul 2,000 years ago to take you from the darkness, and you sent us terrorists to kill us'.

Hey buddy, you’re welcome."

nm too many lies in this article and I am not Orthodox so I will delete my other comments, but it is just politics not about saving Christians which is a shame...

I actually think it's both politics and about saving our Christian brothers in Syria; how do you not?

As much as I detest war in general, this is an exception to the rule as far as I can tell. The ROC is spot on on this issue. Jihadist terrorists in Syria and Iraq (as well as Libya and other places) need to be stopped by force.

Its very sad that my President continues to support "moderate" terrorists, while our supposed 'enemy', Putin, actually has taken the correct and well-reasoned line in this conflict, opposing all terrorist groups and backing the Syrian government.

"I actually think it's both politics and about saving our Christian brothers in Syria; how do you not?"

Because we are not naïve to believe that nation state's (including Russia) motives are purely altruistic.

Ok and niether were the Allied powers during WWII? What's your point?

I hope Christians continue to live and prosper in the middle east. I hope this will help Syrian Christians. Any war will have good and bad outcomes due to it's affects. I just see no way war can be holy, it is a unfortunate sinful last resort that we must turn to. Which is why the canons say soldiers should not take Eucharist for three years after war.

I sometimes wonder if World War 3 is coming soon. Russia telling the U.S. to get out of Syria, two super powers operating in the same space with different agendas, insane ISIS loons spreading all over the place, a nutty dictator, Iran actually helping against ISIS, Obama clueless like a moron deer in the headlights while Putin is a decisive and pushy war hawk, instability in the region at epic levels, massive evacuations of refugees fleeing into Europe in a humanitarian crisis....

Ugh, this is a powder keg!

Plus, Russia could have joined the coalition already in place fighting ISIS, but no. They waited until now to do something (after 4 1/2 years since this started).

They have a vested interest in keeping Assad in power. They know that if ISIS or anyone succeeds in removing Assad from power, that means no more naval presence in the Mediterranean for the Russians.

Just because Russia is majority (although mostly nominally) Orthodox, that doesn't mean we as Orthodox Christians should rush to her defense any time she makes a move. Russia is a nation state just like the united states. Nation states act the way they do primarily in their best interests.

I'm not sure that we can make charges that Russia is mostly "nominally" Orthodox? I live in sunny (and dry) California, USA. I don't know personally how many "real" Orthodox live in Russia, so I can't comment on that. I'm kind of old-fashioned, but I just assume most folks there have some faith. The church-building that is going on at incredible levels in Russia isn't for nothing. They don't build cathedrals for 10 folks to enter. And I don't know privately in their homes and daily lives what Russians feel and think. I'm too far removed.

Regarding Russia's motives with Syria, they're logistic of course. But then again, SO ARE OURS! We've been in Ukraine advising and poking our nose in (ignoring the concept of the Monroe Doctrine) and trying to get Ukraine to go with the EU. That's logistics at its best!

I think Putin is seizing the political opportunity to show who the real man is. Obama has watched as so many Christians have been tortured and killed and brutalized for years. He permitted ISIS to flourish and grow to disturbing levels. Putin has watched this guy create a paper tiger wimp image, and now he's coming in as the macho man saying, "hey, if you're unwilling to stop this insanity, I WILL stop it!" He has America right where he wants her. Weak, depleted, war-weary, touchy-feely, more concerned with LGBT nonsense than anything else, and he's making big moves. You gotta love his moxy....

Just as a few of us on this board have been saying for the past year that Isis has been funded and trained by the west it has been verified in the past few days. Even Cameron of Britain let the cat out of the bag when he slammed Obamas UN speech and said that todays terrorists are all islamic naming ISIS, al Quaeda and Al Nusra as three examples. Past 2 days we have been told Al Nusra are the CIA trained moderates!
These groups are one and the same. The idiots of NATO created the entire refugee mess. So here comes Russia again to rescue Europe from the cesspool they created for themselves. Napoleons Europe was not enough, Hitler's Europe was not enough, Now they must rescue it from Nato's and the CIA's Europe.

.

There is no coalition against ISIS because we are ISIS. Why do you think Turkey bombed the hell out of the Kurds a few weeks ago for successfully fighting ISIS after the Turks agreed to join this coalition.

Why do you think in the past 48 hours Daesh are now refered to as "moderates"? And why do you think in this 4.5 year war these refugees have only now stormed Europe in just the past 5 months?
