I’ve always maintained the current Confederate flag used as a symbol of racism. Many people claim it is a symbol of states rights and has nothing to do with race. But the current Confederate flag was not used during the Civil War, it is the flag adopted by the “Dixiecrats” to promote segregation and Jim Crow laws nearly a hundred years after the war had ended.

If proud Southerners want to wave a flag to represent their history of states rights, why don’t they use the original Confederate flag; the one used during the war? Why are they waving the one adopted by the Dixiecrats to promote segregation?

There were many different versions of the confederate flag and the one that is most popular today was used in the war as a battle flag so it would be false to say it was never used. The most famous southern General was Robert E. Lee and this was the flag the soldiers under his command used. Also if you simply look at all the different designs, the one that is most popular today is probably the most appealing design as well.

The flag you're talking about was square instead of rectangular. Why not use the original square flag? Better yet; with so many confederate flags to choose from, why would they choose the one that was promoted as the symbol of segregation by countless hate groups?

It's probably easier to find the machinery to make a rectangular flag instead of a square flag.

Square flags would not look as good on a flagpole and the flag was not initially used as a symbol of racism. People who come later should not be able to strip away the original meaning. I'm pretty indifferent to the situation and I just think it is annoying that people would argue over such trivial matters. The media likes to play up stuff like this and we shouldn't allow ourselves to be sucked in to it.

I thought this was an interesting release from the Parents Television Council concerning a TV channel yielding to the 'political correctness' pressure:

"When media companies are criticized for marketing programs that glamorize drug and alcohol use, or for sexualizing minors in television programs and movies, or for selling violent entertainment to children – despite overwhelming evidence of harm – or for trivializing rape, child sex abuse and pedophilia, all in the name of 'entertainment,' they are quick to wrap themselves in the banner of Free Speech," wrote PTC president Tim Winter.

"Restraint and responsibility do not infringe on the First Amendment and do not encroach on Free Speech rights. If TV Land is willing to pull The Dukes of Hazzard, out of concern for its harmful impact on our society (and it is good that Viacom is publicly acknowledging its programming can have a harmful impact on our society), they cannot then hide behind the First Amendment to refute the compelling evidence of harm from the violent and sexualized media content they continue to produce and air with impunity."

Sure they can -- the First Amendment doesn't become invalid just because someone chooses not to use it.

In the 60's Amos and Andy reruns disappeared from the small screen due to some similar pressure. The basic format was seen later in Sanford and Son with Redd Foxx. As with the Dukes of Hazzard, the show is caught in a vortex of cultural change.

Really? That has got to be the weakest excuse ever. So they use the Dixiecrat flag because it looks better? How ‘bout the plethora of other flags used during the war?

The Dixiecrats used it to represent their cause which was racist.

Perhaps it’s a trivial issue to you; to some people it is a big deal

I thought that was an odd comment, too, but "Football's" main point--that this flag thing is entirely a manufactured issue--was correct.

The Dixiecrats used it to represent their cause which was racist.
Do you know how many other extremist groups of different sorts, from the old American Nazis to the Service Workers' Union have displayed the American flag in their demonstrations and rallies? I don't see you recommending that it be banned. Why would that be? :sigh:

Just to be clear, which political faction was that? ==> Democrats

Again, just to be clear, which political faction is that? ==> Democrats

Seems like there might be a more direct approach to resolving this. The usual path is admission of guilt, followed by atonement for sin.

If you insist on blaming the Democrats, then you should be pleased that it's under a Democrat administration that the flag is finally being expunged... there's your atonement.

I never understood the tradition of flying the loser's flag over the victor's country, anyway... seems counter intuitive.

There are two: Switzerland and Vatican City.

Versus how many that have rectangular flags?

of course, this kind of makes me wonder why people aren't getting offended over the flag of Somalia.
