How do you like to dress for church?

How do you like to dress for church?

  • I dress formally or "business casual." I believe we should look our best for the Lord.

  • I wear very casual clothes, but I make sure they are clean and in good repair.

  • I don't care what I wear to church, even if it has stains or rips.

  • Other. I'll explain in the thread.

If I feel like it, I like to wear long flowing skirts with leggings underneath and a nice shirt on top with a cardigan or a jacket. But about 75% of the time, I'll wear dark jeans with some nice flats and a nice shirt.

I don't have a problem with a good pair of jeans in church.

I prefer to dress nicely in a modest dress or skirt - somewhere between casual and business casual - but neat. Not because I think God expects me to, but because that's how I prefer to dress in public all the time - regardless of venue. I like to look put together and like someone who cares about herself. Unless I'm working out, going hiking or just running some bumming-around errands - I take the time to dress nicely, modestly and femininely. (I always dress in a way I would consider to be modest, but I'll wear jeans or shorts or athletic pants if the occasions calls for them - it's not very practical to hike a 14er in a skirt or very modest to do squats at the gym in a dress)

And having said that - I don't care if others choose to come to church in shorts and jeans or whatever suits their personal style and comfort level. I'm just glad they came!

this is a good one!
For me I try to dress my best. I try to look at my outfit through God's eyes and a males eyes and ask is this pleasing to God? Is it intentionally seductive (short shorts or short skirt, cleavage showing)?
Usually I will try to wear a long dress or skirt if I have one, if not or its cold I'll wear a clean pair of jeans and a clean top that covers my shoulders and breast. But that is with what I have. I sometimes remind myself I should dress this way all the time and not just on Sunday mornings. :)

I like the first few verses of James 2 where it talks about how wrong it is to shower favoritism to the rich over the poor, and can be applied to outward appearance. People who wear rags, and poor clothes should be as welcomed as people in suits.

Personally I wear whatever. I've worn sweatpants and a dirty t-shirt before, and if people were upset I've never heard anything about it. The outward appearance is such a non-issue to God, so I decide to just wear whatever it is I'm feeling like wearing that day. God forbid that we try to impress others by our clothing when coming to a church meeting. Worship isn't about impressive facades, but honesty and humility of the heart.

We should welcome everyone, especially the ragged people

I think we're in agreement on this issue. We should dress respectfully according to how He has blessed each of us. I've never been to a church that would turn away anyone dressed in rags, thankfully. And I don't think anyone should be. I am concerned about churches that encourage dressing like slobs or provocatively as if there should be no reverence, however.

amen :)

I wear flats or boots with a pair of dark pants or a long skirt. Normally I'll wear a top with a modest neckline and a jacket or cardigan if I'm feeling particularly chilly. I believe in dressing modestly for the Lord, not for people, but this is just a preference. But if someone comes in wearing a tube top or shorts, I'd welcome them with open arms. God knows our hearts and our intentions.

I'd prefer to draw a distinction between "formally" and "business casual." From the beginning of high school, continuing to this day, I wear suits (three-piece, usually), starched white shirts, and bow ties to church. I'd say that falls more along the lines of dressing "formally" than "business casual."

My church attire can be described as casual but clean and modest. I'll wear long or short sleeved shirts, depending on the weather, and jeans with sneakers, the sneakers mainly for practical reasons, as I take the subway to church, and negotiating the subway while dressed in heels is just asking for an accident if I find myself in a situation where I have to push and shove my way into the subway car, and that happens fairly often in my neck of the woods. As far as the modest part goes, my tops and jeans aren't clinging to my body, and when I do wear short sleeves, my shoulders and back are covered. The clean part is basically wearing outfits that match, no rips or stains, a bit of perfume, and my hair styled in a neat ponytail.

Didn't read the thread, but years ago I had a conversation with a young assistant pastor at a larger church I used to attend.

I wear sneakers, jeans, and a polo shirt on Sundays, because I wear sneakers, jeans, and a polo shirts Mondays through Saturdays. This young pastor tried to rebuke me. It went something like this:

"Jesus said I could come just as I am. This is just as I am."

"You should be willing to give God your BEST."

"The bible says my best is as filthy rags before the Lord. But personally, I prefer a freshly laundered polo shirt & jeans.

"You should still wear a collared shirt, tie, and jacket on Sunday."

"So you're saying I should act one way during the week, but straighten myself out on Sunday because on Sunday God is watching? No. This is how I dress, and this is how I act, because this is how I am."

I wear the same thing to services as what I wear to work, the grocery store, etc. On rare occasion, however, I dress up -- a nice suit jacket and dress-pants. My main prerogative is to dress modestly, but sometimes, I wonder what that is for me.

I was reared in a family and place of worship that taught that modesty, for a woman, meant wearing dresses. However, dresses, for me to wear, feel extremely immodest. I am so self-conscious, so aware of all the body parts that show, that I haven't worn a dress or skirt since late 1998. I want to be covered up. Pants to the ankle, no cleavage, and sleeves to the wrist, although sometimes while working, I push the sleeves up to my elbows. I know this is extreme, but it is my judgment for myself, not at all for others.

Going to spend time with the Lord, I dress up! It is a special occasion. Sometimes people razz me about it, saying that the Lord accepts anyone no matter how they dress. Of course He does, but does that mean I should not put forth any effort when He has blessed me with nice things? Usually the people who say something are the ones that have been out all dolled up at the club late into Sunday and then come to church in their sweat pants because it's too hard to drink all night and then dress nicely for the Lord.

Not at all a point of criticism (I don't really believe dresses/skirts are a "must" for women - I usually wear skirts to Church but if I've been at work and am wearing nice pants I'll still go) ... But I'm curious if you aren't at all interested in longer skirts? I usually wear skirts that don't show anything at all, and blouses with at least 1/2 or 3/4 sleeves. I was just surprised if you like skirts/dresses but find them immodest. They certainly CAN be, but there are also modest ones? I know I'm not in the majority for preferring such a style though.

I moved to St. Louis, MO, for 8th grade, and some really icky things were believed there regarding women/girls who wore skirts/dresses. I don't want to post them here, because they are so embedded in my head that they still influence me, and I don't want that to happen to anyone else. I simply can't get beyond it.

However, my husband said something to me about the pants i was wearing. Although he was too kind to say it, I think he thinks they are too tight. I am going to have to consider that. See, I lost 120 pounds, and I didn't think about it -- I wear what fits.

He asked me, "Since you lost all the weight, do you just want to look skinny?"

I answered, "Yes."

He said, "But could you get wider pant legs?"

I answered, "This is what fits with my hip and waist size. They would fall off me if I bought bigger ones."

But he would not have brought this up if maybe he thinks they are too tight...I guess....

I have a similar problem. Different parts of me are different clothing sizes. I'm long-bodied and short-legged, and what I describe as all gut, no butt. (The same applies to my husband. We're as close to the same body type as two people of the opposite gender can be.) My waist and upper arms are thicker in proportion to my shoulders, hips, and legs. Blouses that fit correctly in the arms will be too loose and gaping at the neckline. Slacks and skirts that fit correctly in the hips and thighs, I won't be able to fasten at the waist. My solution for the blouses is to buy them to fit my arms, then get out a needle and thread and add pleats or darts to the necklines, closing the holes a little so they won't reveal too much. I don't have a solution for the slacks and skirts. I need to fit them to my waist, so I can fasten them, and just let them be saggy-baggy everywhere else.

....

My husband drew this cartoon of me.

Was watching Dr. Oz tonight, and there was a doctor on the program who looked just like the cartoon your husband drew of you. Made me smile. She didn't speak with an English accent, however, which is how I imagine you speaking, even though you are from WA.

Back to clothing for worship....
