Your problem is that you don't understand the difference between belief and evidence. Believing that the moon is made of cheese is not evidence that the moon is made of cheese.

In 3rd grade we were given an exercise where we were supposed to differentiate between opinions and facts. I would hope that you were taught this, too. Perhaps now would be a good time to revisit those lessons.

I guess you don't understand what faith is. As an atheist, you couldn't be expected to. It's not something you're used to using, even though you do it subconsciously. It's a shame, really. I pray someday your eyes will be opened to it. Then you won't require evidence for everything.

What happened to "faith"?

I thought we were talking about "faith"?

Did it get Arab-phoned to "belief", so as to make your point look legit?

Faith is a belief that is held in the absence of evidence.

Actually, it's the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I guess you don't understand what faith is.

Faith is a belief that is held in the absence of evidence, as you have so clearly shown.

As an atheist, you couldn't be expected to. It's not something you're used to using, even though you do it subconsciously.

When I was a child I believed in things through faith, like Santa Claus. I was also a christian during my formative years. I am well aware of what faith is and how it is used.

It's a shame, really. I pray someday your eyes will be opened to it. Then you won't require evidence for everything.

The moment you shut your eyes is when you no longer require evidence.

No, it isn't. Repeating false assertions do not make them true.

Faith is not evidence. Faith is the absence of evidence. You have demonstrated this fact from the very start, not being able to present a shred of evidence to back your claims.

Maybe it's time to stop requiring it. We can only reach out and grow when we don't require evidence for everything. We need to step out in faith.

I'm glad you're not the ultimate judge of what is true and false. I hope you don't think you are.

A higher authority than you disagrees.

Maybe it's time to stop requiring it.

Why?

We can only reach out and grow when we don't require evidence for everything. We need to step out in faith.

Prove it.

Show us how our knowledge of the world has grown by refusing to look at evidence, and just believing something because we want it to be true.

For the reasons I just stated.

Prove it.

Show us how our knowledge of the world has grown by refusing to look at evidence, and just believing something because we want it to be true.

Nobody is telling you to refuse anything. If there is something that doesn't have physical evidence and requires faith, you need to step out in that faith and then go from there. It's like jumping into a pool when someone in it tells you that the water is warm. You don't need them to tell you the exact temperature and then provide you with a printout, along with the manufacturer's guarantee of the thermometer's accuracy. At least, I hope not.

You are telling me to ignore evidence.

Humans evolving from ape-like ancestors and radiating out from Africa does have physical evidence behind it.

You are trying to tell a pool full of people splashing about that there is no water in the pool.

I'm telling you to consider everything.

Humans evolving from ape-like ancestors and radiating out from Africa does have physical evidence behind it.

As interpreted by certain people.

You are trying to tell a pool full of people splashing about that there is no water in the pool.

If you remember my example from the post you just quoted from (2 posts ago), I said someone in the pool said the water is warm.

When I was a child I believed in things through faith, like Santa Claus.

That's because faith requires an object; and not just an object, but an object acted on.

James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

That object, in our case, is Jesus Christ.

We'd quickly go extinct as a species if we went by that rule.

We would also go extinct if we never used faith. Think about it.
