I am pretty sure a portion of Vaatu and Raava will come back, as it already has with Korra's mirror spirit, and Kurvira. It would be interesting if Kurvira actually is a good guy, and she got a "spark" of Raava, like Korra's mirror spirit having dark avatar glow from Vaatu. MAYBE that is why Korra still saw Kurvira with Raava activation eve after she was purged of the metal toxin.

I think they filled the episode because it is the series finale in a few episodes, and we may see Toph, Kurvira, Firelord Zuko, Tenzin, Katara, Sokka, Lin, Su, Bolin, Mako, etc. do some major sacrifice/beatdown/crazy stuff.
That would be technically reading way too much into things past what has already been seen. Korra saw the Dark Korra spirit in everyone she fought against way before Toph - including when she was in the Earth Kingdom cage matches and was being beaten up by another Earth Bender due to seeing the Dark Korra Spirit on the fighter.

tumblr_ndj11iaMFm1ry1sxno1_500.gif

And the Dark Spirit Korra was also in the Swamp - while Kurvira was across the other side of the globe running the Earth Kingdom..

tumblr_nd8mu2XIT21rdfsmyo4_500.gif

It was never just on Kurvira...although I can definitely say that the way the Dark Spirit Korra and Kurvira walk are very similar:

tumblr_inline_nepb3v8yHW1qgn0lv.gif

tumblr_inline_nepbd6cCo81qgn0lv.gif

But on the concept of a Dark Avatar spirit, as another said best (for excerpt):

...it’s clear that Dark Avatar Korra isn’t just a hallucination. Normal people might not be able to see it but it seems like spirits can, which heavily suggests that it’s at least partially spiritual in origin. (Of course, there appear to be hallucinatory aspects to it as well — it’s unlikely that Dark Avatar Korra possessed the woman in the Earth Rumble fight, and Korra’s pool of “mercury” turned out to be mud)

There are other hints to its spiritual origin, too. Its rapid, almost teleportation-like style of dodging and moving during its fight with Korra in the swamp called to mind the Owl-Faced Spirit from 2x01. Even the name the crew gave it — “Dark Avatar Korra” — evokes the idea of a dark spirit equivalent to Korra. So, let’s consider that option — "Dark Avatar Korra" is the dark form of the Avatar Spirit. That shouldn’t be possible, of course. The Avatar Spirit is Raava, and she’s comprised of near-pure light by her very nature. Or… well… that was the case during Wan’s era, when Raava’s dark counterpart was kept trapped in a tree. By spiritbending Vaatu, Korra effectively recombined Raava and Vaatu into the connected spiritual dyad they were always intended to be, with Raava dominant. If Raava and Vaatu were recombined into a connected spiritual dyad, though, it seems plausible that, as a set, they’d be vulnerable to external shifts in energy in a way that they weren’t when they were separate. Jinora was able to restore Raava by introducing a large amount of spiritual light into the immediate surroundings. What would happen to Raava’s dominance if darkness were to be introduced into the Avatar Spirit?

Unfortunately, it seems like Nickelodeon is trying to sabotage the series again - as noted best in Nickelodeon Sabotages 'The Legend of Korra' (Again) with Forced Clip Show. As said there (for excerpt):
Would the head offices rather the show never existed? Perhaps that is too harsh a claim to make, but there’ something going on within the studio that we will most likely never be privy to. Thankfully, some of that hidden knowledge was revealed to us in the form of a letter written to fans by series co-creator Bryan Konietzko. In his letter, Konietzko speaks of budget cuts for season four and having to make a tough descision on whether to make a clip episode, or fire some of his staff. Even though this episode felt like a waste of time at such a crucial point in the season, Konietzko deserves to be applauded for valuing loyalty to his crew over the bottom line. Hollywood is a messy place, forcing even the best kinds of people to mire through the muck of studio politics. By releasing this letter, Konietzko drew back some of that corporate curtain, so fans would not be left in the dark. Three cheers for Bryan!

Here is an excerpt from Konietzko’s tumbler post:
In a couple hours the eighth chapter of Korra Book 4 will be released online, and I suppose, if you are none the wiser, a few minutes into it you will feel duped and yell at your screen, “Hey! This is a crummy clips episode!” And that is (almost) exactly what it is––except we all worked really hard to make sure at the very least it isn’t crummy. I’m here to explain why we ended up having to do one.

Sometime around a year and a half ago we were similarly duped on a large scale. We got the news from the higher-ups that our Book 4 budget was getting slashed, almost to the tune of an entire episode’s budget. We had two options: 1) let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early, or 2) make a clips episode. We never considered the first option. We weren’t going to do that to our crew, and even if we were callous enough to do so, we never would have been able to finish the season without them. But having grown up on TV in the ’80s and ’90s, we all dread clips episodes, where characters sit around saying, “Remember that time when…” and leftover footage is reheated for no one’s enjoyment.... ...
Back on Avatar, we had something that functioned as a sort of clips episode, though it was all new animation and really hard to make, Episode 317, “The Ember Island Players.” Our heroes went to a play where they saw themselves and their tales performed by actors on stage. It was simultaneously a reckoning for the characters before they headed into the denouement, and a lighthearted romp where we got to poke fun at our own show before things got really serious in the remaining episodes. Korra’s “Remembrances” ended up serving the same function, albeit with old footage instead of a newly animated play. There is about 5 minutes of new footage, wonderfully animated by Studio Mir, and a bunch of funny and touching narration from the characters. There are also some fun chibi heads and other treats in there to spice up the old footage.

What started out as a reluctant chore ended up being a really fun episode to make, and in the end I truly love it. Mike did an awesome job directing it and storyboarding all the chibi hilarity, as well as overseeing the wonderful script by Josh Hamilton, Katie Mattila, and Tim Hedrick. Joaquim Dos Santos, Ryu Ki Hyun, and Lauren Montgomery drew fantastic storyboards for the new footage (particularly Lauren’s insane Varrick posing). Lots of other folks worked their tails off on this one, namely Amaris Calvin, our animatics editor; Christie Tseng, our character designer who drew and colored all of the final chibi art; Matt Gadbois, our After Effects editor; and Chris Hink, our final picture editor. Last but not least, Aran Tanchum and Vinny Guisetti on foley, Benjamin Wynn on sound design, and a stellar new score with all your favorite hits by Jeremy Zuckerman. And plenty of other fine folks I’m forgetting!

So now you know what it is and why it happened. I hope you do end up enjoying it after all, especially as a last lighthearted, nostalgic romp before POOP. GETS. REAL. And then the series is done.

tumblr_nfddjjE56a1rptk5lo1_1280.jpg

That said, I was bothered that they did the episode that they did since there are so many points that have yet to be addressed. Where is Kai since the first episode? Where is Raava?

Nonetheless, seeing how intense things were getting, it's a good thing that they are taking a break. The series has been pretty amazing and when reviewing all the seasons thus far, it makes sense for them to slow down a bit.

I kind of see Nick's point. The show doesn't match the network demographic so getting sponsors is a problem. Since it's more like a mini-series, showing the episodes out of order in syndication isn't going to work.

Now that the show is online only (and there are no commercials) I don't see how the show is generating revenue and since I bet production costs are high due to the show's quality, it's a losing proposition.

Star Wars Rebels is really picking up and Gravity Falls looks like it's continuing so I'm glad there won't be a void when Korra's run is up.

The show really has gone beyond the realm of a mini-series, as that's what the original Legend of Korra was in its first season. It is on the level of A:TLA and Nick has been actively limiting it even though other networks would kill to have it since they all had action based shows (i.e. Young Justice or Teen Titans on Cartoon Network, Transformers: Beast Hunters on the Hub Network, etc.). Even Nick used to have action shows repeatedly on the air - from Batman the Animated Series to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and several others.

What bothers Nick, IMHO, is that their flag ship show is one they don't know what to do with since it is very mature - but that's no different than what occurred in the 90s when they had shows like Are you afraid of the Dark or The Secret World of Alex Mack, The Tommorrow People, and many other shows.

Other shows like Star Wars are cool - but the Rebels show is not really that good, IMHO. There's nothing comparable to Korra in Western Animation...

So episode 8 seemed like filler.
Glad they redeemed themselves this week with this episode - and showing the return of Raava, as well as showing more continuity with Zaheer helping out Korra become herself again. For him to note to Korra "“You’re wrong. That poison should’ve killed you, but you’re able to fight it off. You think your power has limits. I say, its limitless.." .....Kurvira needs to watch out. There will be a reckoning..

So Gxg I probably do over think this show, so I will make a few comments.

I skipped the filler, so I hope I didn't miss something super important.

I wish this episode was part 1 of a season finale - 80+ minutes long. The ending especially felt rushed; would have loved to see more Korra/Zaheer frenemy development.

Korra finally got her mojo back! Now, she has to completely own.

Lin, Bolin and Opal rescue mission!

Raava - I was expecting her back in a more "tangible and visual" form, but twas OK.

Hmm... the spirit vines...

Zaheer scary fly toward Korra for teh lulz.

That was grimy how Prince what'shisface was invited to the elite meeting, and not Korra.

I like Tenzin's continuity of relation - bridging TLAB with LOK, keeping the Aang super air-conditioned nostalgia, and acting like super mentor for this new generation. Tenzin beat Zaheer, I would say "3-2," and at least stood his ground against three super master benders of three different elements. To me, he owns; I think Jinora has a long way to go before she is even close to Tenzin.

Great episode, now let's kick some earthbending side, Korra.

I would have liked to see Prince Wu develop and become more down to earth and aware as the series progressed. Set it up so he could take the throne at the end of the series and be competent enough to help the people prosper but not be a threat in any way.

Great episode, now let's kick some earthbending side, Korra.

I think another one on one fight between Korra and Kuvira would be disappointing if the story doesn't use that army and super weapon.

Even if he was a semi-tool, I would like that better if he showed at least politically he could keep a kingdom in decent shape. I am slightly disappointed by his character development also. But,we have a few episodes left, maybe he will show us something.

I think they will use the superweapon, mainly because it will allow Korra to exploit that "she has more power than ever... in the spirit world." And, she will show some super avatar mojo.

I think they will revamp Kur. Vs. AVATAR because it kinda just has to be. Korra will completely own Kurvira, and possibly her army this time, and she will be forced to use her superweapon. My take, at least.

I doubt Price Wu is going to amount to anything this season other than being the individual who realizes that he really isn't qualified to rule and thus needs to step down from leadership. If they allow for the development of democracy where others freely choose who they wish to rule, that would be wild...

I think another one on one fight between Korra and Kuvira would be disappointing if the story doesn't use that army and super weapon.
The super weapon is going to be used, IMHO.

I did think it was interesting to see how the episode (which I believe to be excellent) actually went with their treatment of Zaheer. It was cool to see that they did give the character a level of redeemption - with him becoming more wise after his second imprisonment and seeing the Avatar for who she is. They took him from the level of villan to anti-hero and stayed true to what Toph noted when she said that Korra needed to actually learn from her enemies rather than simply defeat them - and to have Zaheer be the one instructing Korra on how to have balance within herself (being the person who threw her out of balance to begin with) was amazing. It seemed to be a good level of development, showing that it was never personal with Zaheer in what he did to Korra....and he was willing to help as long as their interests aligned and he could address the errors he had made.

I love the fact that he is still well-adversed in travelling the Spirit World - thus not truly being imprisoned by his chains. He is still deeply spiritual and able to be aware of what goes on - and The fact that he was repentant for what his actions led to with understanding that his actions resulted in Kuvira the Empress is something that led me to gain more respect for him - and appreciation for what he represents.

As said best in Legend Of Korra Turns One Of Its Villains Into A Therapist :

Zaheer has something that Korra desperately needs, something Tenzin has been unable to give her: faith in her own strength. Zaheer's quest to kill Korra was never personal. He may have been trying to end the Avatar cycle, but that was a means to an end. Korra may have come away from their encounter deeply scarred, but Zaheer came away deeply impressed with her ability to survive. It also helps that Kuvira represents the worst of what Zaheer fought against and that Korra holds him responsible for the power vacuum that enabled Kuvira's rise.

Zaheer doesn't coddle her like Katara or try to protect her from pain like Tenzin or try to knock her back into shape like Toph. Korra needed things from all of these people: tenderness, time to heal, the reignition of the fire in her belly. But Zaheer provides the missing piece: he forces her to confront what actually happened her, to relive her near-death and recognize that she—incredibly—survived. It's only when she is able to make that pain part of her and stop pushing it aside that she is finally able to fully connect with Raava, enter the Spirit World, and rescue Jinora and the others. She finally recognizes that she may be scarred, but she isn't ruined.

Additionally, as said best elsewhere:

"Don’t fear what might’ve been"

This scene wasn’t about redemption for Zaheer or forgiveness from Korra, this was about acceptance and healing.

The one thing about Zaheer is he believes everyone deserves freedom. That’s the entire reason he took out the Earth Queen. But look at his face when Korra brings up Kuvira. He remembers the rumors he’s heard and wonders if he made the right decision by killing the Queen. In this moment, he identified with Korra. He thought he was doing something good but ended up making a situation worse. He’s saddened at the fact that many people lost their freedom.

But get this; this is the man who literally tried to kill Korra. The man who tortured her. Yet, he was the one to help her heal spiritually. He helped her accept what he did to her. Why? Because she needs to get better in order to stop Kuvira - something he also wants. What I love even most is that he doesn’t deny the fact that he tried to kill her, that he tortured her. Instead, he helps her accept it. He reminds her that he failed and that she didn’t. That’s why I love that line, "don’t fear what might’ve been". For too long Korra has been afraid of what could’ve happened and not focusing on what did happen. Antagonist or not, Zaheer’s feelings are very genuine. Everything he believes in, he believes in it with a passion. And I think that’s beautiful.

That said, I did appreciate the fact that he seemed to have a sense of humor when trying to help Korra come to terms with the fact that she could never expect him to free her, as if gloating that he's in prison and that she's not afraid would really change anything. The scene with him flying was a trip in how he called her bluff and helped her get the point.

tumblr_nfqznvOoUj1tksy09o1_500.gif

I appreciated how another placed Zaheer as a complicated individual due to the fact that "he truly believed he was doing what was best for the world...everything he did was motivated by a sense of altruism, a warped kind of altruism, but altruism nonetheless.... His actions were never petty or selfish, he wasn’t trying to rule the world, he had no real personal agenda; he had a view of what he believed was best for the world and all the people in it, and he made many personal sacrifices to see that vision realized...and in that sense, I’ve always seen Zaheer as an incredibly moral character. It’s an alternative morality to which he adheres ..His actions are consistent, and while one may not agree with them, what motivates those actions is ultimately noble: a desire to do right by the world."

How amazing it was that Korra first met Zaheer (the man who tried to kidnap her as a child and eventually take her out) in the Spirit world....only to be guided back INTO the Spirit world by him after he realized her purpose.

And at the end of the day, as an anti-hero, he still adheres to his philosophy of chaos being the natural order of things - but at least he can mature in knowing the right way to apply it...

Korra finally got her mojo back! Now, she has to completely own.
I hope that she does show others how on point she is now - and with Raava being back in the picture and letting Korra know that she's even more powerful in the Spirit World than in the physical world (as I didn't know she was capable of bending in the Spirit world since it seemed Unalaq said otherwise when she meditated into the Spirit world to save Jinora ), who knows where things will go.

tumblr_nftd5cDs4R1svr2xno1_r1_500.gif

Lin, Bolin and Opal rescue mission!
It should be interesting to see Bolin either show he is growing in maturity or reverting back to being clueless..

And with Lin and Opal, running into Toph in the swamp or back at Zafou should be interesting.....the family is truly stellar. And it's wild seeing the ways Lin is so much like her mother in multiple ways.

Raava - I was expecting her back in a more "tangible and visual" form, but twas OK.
I loved that it was not necessarily too flashy with her return...

That was grimy how Prince what'shisface was invited to the elite meeting, and not Korra.
When people lose faith in others and fail to realize where their solutions are not necessarily the best, it tends to bring a lot of problems to the table.

I am still shocked the leaders have yet to take responsibility for the fact that they allowed Kurvira to come to power after empowering her with their confidence after her stablizing Ba Sing Se - and then adding on to the mess by allowing someone like Wu to be the best replacement they could find. Can't stand President Raiko as the man seems clearly focused on politics alone rather than doing what's best for all...

Tenzin will always be legendary to me for how wise he stands out. A perfect contrast in many ways to his father while also being one who is distinct for having a fatherly role that Aang never had

Great episode, now let's kick some earthbending side, Korra.

The nominees were released yesterday.

Elsa was from Frozen (she sings "Let it go")
Thanks for the resource link on the matter.

As it concerns the "Let It Go" song, I can't stand it...or the movie, for that matter. It wasn't horrible, of course, but it definitely was not all it was cracked up to be...

I think that's a fair assessment - although I also think there will be some level of Korra acknowledging what Kurvira had to represent - in line with the theme of learning from your enemies. The enemies she has faced in all of the LOK Seasons have been very complicated and others who were nuanced...all having legitimate motivations, resulting in compelling characters rather than villains who act “because they are evil" - and all villains are born from the excesses of good intentions and taking their ideologies way too far. And Korra will have to take seriously what Toph taught her in the swamp when it comes to learning from enemies and incorporating their ideologies into yourself as a means of bringing positive change. For Korra has continually experienced events that brought her to a breaking point due to everyone trying to hurt her in some way or another, whether that be Amon taking away her bending or Unalaq taking away Raava/her connection with past Avatars or Zaheer trying to take away her life and ending the Avatar cycle - and yet it has all been for the goal of allowing her to become stronger and witness a new Avatar emerge - one who will hopefully learn from her past mistakes and even incorporate the good aspects of her enemies’ ideologies.

I think they will revamp Kur. Vs. AVATAR because it kinda just has to be. Korra will completely own Kurvira, and possibly her army this time, and she will be forced to use her superweapon. My take, at least.

It will be amazing to see where Kurvira will literally be placed in check by the Avatar - as I still say she failed to really face the AVATAR at as she was meant to be...and thus, she really didn't defeat the Avatar anymore than someone truly defeats a roaring Lion who has been weakened by sickness - it's cheap.

Reckoning has to happen..
