  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I thought you'd like his name. The second sermon is the one that deals directly with the "Man of God" theme. The first is, in my opinion, more interesting but less directly related to that theme.

FYI, he ties the "man of god" concept to the clergy/laity split that sources to Rome. He believes in the priesthood of believer as the biblical norm.

So, which do you believe in priesthood of all believers equally, or a priest/laity distinction?

It is evident that you didn't watch the sermon. Try watching it before you put words into Conrad Mbewe's mouth.

Try reading your links before accusing others.

"It is because we have lost this truth of the priesthood of all believers that we have now created a very sleek class of “men of God” in Evangelicalism."
A Letter from Kabwata

So which do you support? Priesthood of all believers or priest/laity (aka "men of god" in evangelicalism)?

The choice you offer is false.

All Christians are priests of our Lord. Kings and priests of our God.

Not all are apostles, not all are pastors, not all are teachers.

The clergy/laity distinction is already present in scripture when the apostles, bishops, elders, and deacons act in distinct servant roles within the Church; these men are clergy and all the others are laity. In religious organizations, the laity consists of all members who are not a part of the clergy, whether they are or are not members of religious institutes, for example a nun or lay brother. Clergy are some of the formal leaders within certain religions. The roles and functions of clergy vary in different religious traditions but these usually involve presiding over specific rituals and teaching their religion's doctrines and practices.

I love it when people would rather find points to attack Catholic rather then paying any attention to the actual sermons on the original point stated.

Why pay attention to a cause of worry when we can play the attack game.

Standing Up has a tradition to follow and it involves contradicting almost everything that is distinctly Catholic, his posts demonstrate how faithful he is to that tradition in what he writes.

How do we achieve doctrinal conformity?

Rom 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

.
…14It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Sad what some view as tradition then.

Anyway, back on point. I found the sermons enlightening but troubling as well. The parallels between the Witch doctor and the African Pentecostal/Charismatic "preacher" are rather scary, and what worse is this inability to speak out until pushed too far.

And I see parallels between the African situation and the prosperity/charismatic televangelists that dominate the Christian face of the media.

There is a good reason why you are so concerned MC.

Yes, and it seems so tragic that the most vigorous and well funded types of evangelism in Africa that originate from the west (and especially the USA) appear to be charismatic/pentecostal. Catholic evangelism in Africa has long been stable and health/quality-of-life oriented but the new promise of health & wealth by means of the "men of God" and their alleged power to do miracles has had a very damaging effect. Nor has the west come out of this unscathed as you note. The Word-of-Faith movement and its many spin-off variants has influenced USA evangelicalism very profoundly, that is why we see so much emphasis on the band in mega churches and the speedy movement of people away from small congregation towards mega churches. It's also probably the main force behind the homogenising of evangelical denominations.

I've been following his blog for quite a while (although I am not a Baptist myself). It's very interesting to get a perspective from the other side of the Ocean.

It's easy. Everybody should believe my interpretation of Scripture. No exceptions.

Don't trust me? Neither would I!

Guess we're stuck with the present system, then.

No need to be stuck. Trust the Church instead of yourself. The Church has a better head in Christ.;);)

There is a better path, as you say, follow the Church for she is Christ's bride and follows him as her beloved.

I like the sound of that word. :)

Sng 1:7
(To Her Beloved)
Tell me, O you whom I love,
Where you feed your flock,
Where you make it rest at noon.
For why should I be as one who veils herself
By the flocks of your companions?

Matthew 17:5 Still of-Him speaking, behold! a luminous cloud over-shadows them.
And behold! a voice out of the cloud saying "this is the Son of Me, the Beloved in whom I delight, be ye hearing Him!".

One Presbyterian chap that I knew was convinced that singing hymns (rather than psalms) with musical accompaniment was a horrendous sin that would likely see the instigators of it doomed to perdition. So it looks like even some very marginal issues can be inflated into major issues when religious tempers are up.

Hence the degradation of Protestantism, rather then deal with the reforms that needed to be dealt with, as is the case with some mainline denominations moving back to the center and actively engaging in ecumenical talks, you get the spirit that the entire tradition of the Church is wrong....which led to the current situation and the polarization in the church.

Another issue that creates a lot of noise and precious little light is the KJV only controversy where we see books written by advocates of KJV Only condemning Westcott and Hort to perdition and calling bibles based on the critical NT Greek text satanic. It's very difficult to see how ecumenical unions could work between a KJV Only group and an Evangelical group.

Agreed. As evidenced by the latest round of "debate" on KJV-onlyists and other Christians.

I have a few more factors to add that have led to the degradation and a few things that I think, IMO have helped to repair the bridge as it were but that might have to wait for a bit, do not want to railroad the debate. And we gotta let the tinhatters speak.

Did you like the al-foil song? :)
