• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Following all the doctor’s recommendations, but in the long run, I don’t get it.

Cutting salt means that I won’t be having Subway on Sunday after church and I quit eating cheese. We get take out once a month as well, so that won’t happen anymore. Otherwise I lived a nearly salt free existence before. Fat is cut down, I understand that.

As for exercise and activity, it will be a while before I get up to the level that I was at before.

Cutting salt is one of the worse recommendations from doctors. Without sodium/electrolytes, not a single molecule of water can pass through our cell membranes.

Take your doctor's advice with a grain of salt (pun intended). Table salt (or processed salt) is bad for you. It's been stripped of all minerals, making it into something that is not recognizable and not beneficial for your body. On top of that, they add microscopic particles of sand (and glass) as an anti-caking agent. Don't believe me? Read the label. It says, "calcium silicate" (aka sand). What is glass made of? This harms the body.

Earth salts, or unprocessed salt, like sea salt, Himalayan and Redmonds, contain up to 92 trace minerals, and is a complete substance the body can utilize. According renown salt expert, Dr. David Brownstein, all studies proving negative effects from salt were based on studies using table salt.

The word salary comes from the word "salt". The Romans used to pay wages with salt. It was a valuable commodity that was essential to survival.

If you have high blood pressure, quit using table salt, and consume at least 1/2 tsp of unprocessed earth salt/day and watch your blood pressure go down after a few days.

Salt is essential for life, along with water and oxygen.

Got heart problems? Take lots of magnesium chloride and feel free to indulge in cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper under the tongue can supposedly stop a heart attack in 30 seconds, and stop internal and external bleeding and strokes.

The reason I said that I don't get it is because my salt intake is only in those few indulgences. I stay away from salt already mainly because I don't like the changed flavour. Packaged foods are already fewer between in our house because of allergies. I would still be using them if they hadn't added soy to everything. Not that I am allergic to soy, but my granddaughter is and I don't like to have to go shopping before I can feed her.

All my levels are within normal, including the blood pressure. Had it been out of normal we might have caught this without going through the heart attack.

Salt has far more benefits than high blood pressure. Heart issues, including arteriosclerosis, is often related to severe magnesium deficiency. Google and YouTube Dr. Mark Sircus, and he'll tell you all about it. Good luck.
It won't make me like the taste of it.

Cutting salt is actually one of the best things Americans could do besides losing weight and quitting smoking.

By cutting salt, doctors aren't suggesting you get absolutely zero sodium. Nearly everything we eat has sodium. The problem is, almost everything we eat has a ridiculous amount of it. In the hospital, we usually put cardiac patients on a diet with less than 2000mg of sodium a day. That is what we consider "low salt". This is plenty to maintain what the body requires.

I had trouble eating some of the hospital food because it was too salty. I don't use salt when cooking and I have always tended to buy canned goods with less salt. My daughter helped me clean out my cupboards and most of it was already low salt. We ended up just getting rid of things I would never use.

Sorry to hear that, must have been terrifying.
Actually, no, it wasn't even a little frightening while I was experiencing it. After the fact, with reading up on it, I know I was close to death at least twice. I was more worried for the people who depend on me. They would learn to cope, but it would be hard on my husband because he doesn't understand where I am going.
Oh, he has heard about it, but it doesn't quite make sense to him.

I, on the other hand, know exactly where I am going, warts and all, I am redeemed.

Like you, I do not want the taste of salt in my food. The sea salts are very expensive and did not agree with my body's needs. I take about half a tsp of baking soda with water and it takes care of my sodium needs quite well. It does not contain the anti-caking chemicals that I find cause blood-sugar control issues. BTW many cheese products also contain the anti-caking chemicals as do many seasonings like old bay.

If you keep track of your sodium intake, you can take in up to 1300 mg in a day without even touching a salt shaker, baking soda, or even canned or packaged foods. Sodium is in many whole foods, naturally. Since the recommended intake per day is 2300 mg, your half teaspoon of baking soda may be putting you over that.

I have already taken in 151.5 mg of sodium this morning with just two eggs done on a pan greased lightly with olive oil, and a coffee. I know I shouldn't have the coffee, but some things I just won't give up completely.

He is a quack. Americans get quite enough salt in their diet.

Following all the doctor’s recommendations, but in the long run, I don’t get it.

After my first heart attack, and subsequent Quad bypass back in '92, I followed ALL the dietary instructions from the Cardio RELIGIOUSLY. After the second heart attack in '95, I was a little less religious. By the 13th one in '06 (with another bypass), I pretty much ignore the various dietary "Opinions".

SO - I just avoid Booze, and fat intake - NIX on red meat, hamburgers, fried foods, and the like.

I mainly live on fish, veggies, Chicken, lots of salads. My Main problem is eating in moderation, since I SHOULD dump about 50 pounds (but probably never will). I'm 72, and ready to "go Home" anytime.

My Cardio would LIKE me to become a "Vegan", but that ain't happening. I do attempt to drink half my body weight in ounces of water every day (in my case 6 - 20 oz bottles). That seems to make me feel a bit better.

Since I've been living with this issue for 23 years now (they only gave me 12 years - joke's on them), and continuing to work full time - one thing that's become obvious is that there's CONTROVERSY in the medical community about what's GOOD, and what isn't. Some say drink Red Wine, Some say lose weight, some say to avoid this or that.

But the BIGGEST thing that appeared to STOP the heart attacks from occurring was getting my teeth pulled - ALL of 'em - low grade gum infections are apparently a "Plaque builder". Cardios, however don't generally seem to take any of that seriously.

And (Because I'm carrying 17 stents - most of 'em "coated") I'm on "Plavix" (Clopidogrel - is the generic) and I haven't had an attack since '06.

But I DO keep the nitro bottle REAL handy.

I had a "widow maker" two years ago and 'died' on the gurney. A nurse brought me back, praise God.
In the aftermath, I took very seriously the endless admonitions about diet and exercise, which I neglected for 30+ years.
With exercise and a low fat/sodium/cholesterol diet, I am in the best shape of my adult life. Try it, and I wish you the best.

What about Frank's hot sauce. Will it do the job?

Hello. Bob, sounds like you have plenty of iron ! sounds like you are close to having the record number of stents !

At this point in time listen to your doctors. First you most likly go thru cardio rehab which is good.

Standard procedure is NASH diet, which sounds like you already do follow. FYI your right on the sodium. Thing many do not
think of is bread with about 130 if i remember. Kidney/ Dialysis patients are usually on a low salt diet (2000 mg/day)

Depends on what caused your MI, if you have CAD, and if you had a sent placed, bypass, or clot buster treatment

before going wild with "natural stuff", clear with MD or RX, just because it's natural, does not make it safe, and some
react with meds you could be taking. Last thing we want to do right now is getting things all fired up.

will say a little prayer tonight, and hope you get along good. Take care.
