Pope Francis and Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople have agreed to plan for an ecumenical meeting to be held in Nicea in 2025, the AsiaNews service reports.

Patriarch Bartholomew revealed that he and the Roman Pontiff had “agreed to leave as a legacy to ourselves and our successors a gathering in Nicaea in 2025, to celebrate together, after 17 centuries, the first truly ecumenical synod, where the Creed was first promulgated.” The Council of Nicea, held in 325, brought together over 300 bishops and approved the formula of faith now known as the Nicene Creed.

Pope Francis and the Ecumenical Patriarch chose Nicea—now known as Iznik, Turkey—as the site for a council that could bring together Eastern and Western Christians, as the original Council of Nicea did.
Bartholomew: With Francis, we invite all Christians to celebrate the first synod of Nicaea in 2025 (AsiaNews)

You know what, I read it differently. I read it as "we're going to have the first truly ecumenical council in 17 centuries" not "we're going to honor the council that happened 17 centuries ago." The first is very bad, IMO, but the second, isn't a big deal. Thank you, Columba, I hadn't read it that way.

Let's hope nothing happens. If +Patriarch Bartholomew continues with this, he may find himself very isolated because the other patriarchates will not go along with him on this (thank God). He is not the Pope of the East as a lot of the media likes to call him. Unfortunately, I have yet to see him correct them and explain that there is no supreme pontiff in the Orthodox Church. He has no more power than any of the other patriarchs.

That's what I was thinking when I said this could go very badly. His All Holiness will be out of a throne if he goes too far with this. It sounds like ArmyMatt was saying though - photo op.

On the other hand, if the Romans took this opportunity to renounce the filioque…I mean, it is Nicea. That's a step in the right direction.

We wont, unless we had to recite it in greek in whose case that would be the accurate reading but as long as we recite it in Spanish, Italian, english etc. etc. and we use the verb "Procede" in stead of "Emanate" the accurate reading is "Procedes from the Father and the Son", but if the verb is changed to "Emanate" as the meaning of the Greek text, then we can say "Emanates from the Father", we may add "through the Son"

Most likely some event will take place in 2025 in terms of it being the anniversary. I remember on the island of Patmos many clergy both Roman and protestant were invited to celebrate the anniversary of the writing of the book of Revelation at the monastery of Patmos.

That event held in 1995 was probably one of the better more effective ecumenical events. In that lectures were given by the Patriarch and other Orthodox clergy, basically the non-Orthodox listened to us. Tours of the Orthodox Holy sites on the island, took place such as the cave where St John recieved his vision and is an Orthodox Chapel. 2025 is so far off, it's not something we have to worry about, most likely others havegotten invitations as well.

And then Pope Francis entered the cathedral. He re-enacted the horrible scene in 1054 storming into Hagia Sophia. He slammed down a scroll. Patriarch Bartholomew, in shock, grabbed the paper and read it...And it said the following

I, Pope Francis, admit to the Catholic Church's crimes of the past 1,000 years of the Donation of Constantine forgery, of claiming to be infallible when we all know that's horse manure, of inventing crazy stuff like indulgences, of pretending to rule the entire roost instead of just my turf, of allowing a distorted, liberal, scary, modernistic mess of a liturgy to come into existence. I repent of my crimes and ask to be restored to Holy Orthodoxy! I promise forthwith to forbid clown Masses, liturgical ballet dancers, rainbow vestments, strumming guitars and vile Mexican-style mariachi music during Mass, drop the cardboard-tasting wafers as communion, allow my priests to marry and lead normal lives, heck, I'll even encourage my priests and bishops to grow beards! I swear my bishops and cardinals will be trained in how to light up an incense censor. We'll drop the girly-girl altar "boys," we'll lengthen the mass to 2 hours, we'll get the sacred art back in our churches, we'll hire SSPX priests to be in charge, we'll get rid of the court-jester-looking Papal guards at the Vatican. We'll learn some Greek and Russian. We'll renounce our Protestant pews and sitting during liturgy. We'll change! We'll repent! Please let us back!

I had a feeling this was coming sooner or later, both leaders are great Christians, but I'm sure most Orthodox will not like this announcement. Don't all the Bishops need to agree to a council in the EOC, rather than just the EP? I know he can call a council, but I wonder who will show up.

Maybe they'll throw in some Islam stuff into the Creed, IP!? Just open the Catholic catechism. They love Islam! Allahu Akbar!

By all means, keep changing the Symbol of Faith on a whim. The West is changing everything else every time the wind blows in a different direction.
