It is easy to boast about how strong one's faith is when it remains untested. No doubt, the faith of all of us has been tested in relatively small ways by moments of fear and episodes of uncertainty, lingering between the first exam and the physician's prognosis or the last treatment. But how many of you have had your faith tested during a moment when a crazy person keeps her pistol jammed against your head and tells you that she's going to kill you? How many of you have had your faith tested, while a lynch mob drags you toward the hanging tree and you see a noose dangling from one of its limbs? How many of you have had your faith tested, while someone is shooting at you? How many of you have had your faith tested, while a gang of punks encircles you and starts to play tag-team brutality at your expense? How many of you have had your faith tested, while finding yourself surrounded by a swarm of government goons on a black-file mission with the goon's leader informing you that you have one chance to survive? How many of you have had your faith tested, while a pack of hoodlums is keeping you imprisoned in a hole in the ground? How many of you have had your faith tested, while you are fleeing from members of a street gang are trying to catch you so that they can enjoy hurting and robbing you? How many of you have had your faith tested, while the truck that you were riding in flipped and rolled over and over in a deep ditch? How many of you have had your faith tested during times when you had no idea where you might find your next meal?
Now just imagine what it would be like to have your faith tested, during months and possibly a year or more of suffering through a period when perilous moments similar to those described above might take place at any moment and starvation and lack of drinking water is something that you and your loved ones need to confront day after day after day. That is what all of us face sooner or later if we survive long enough--and those times might begin next week, next month, next year, or four years from now. But they are on their way....
