• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am 53-now 54 at the time of this editing-years old. I live in an appartment. I have worked as a security guard at the same place for 25 years and the security contract is coming up for a bid and I may or may not be retained. I also suffer from periodic bouts of depression but I have not been diagnosed as such. I would like a better job but as each day and year passes it looks less likely. Can God give me a better situation and/or somehow make my life less miserable? Can anyone speak from personal experience?

I've prayed to get healed of my depression for years. In the last five months God has put on my heart to begin to commune with Him throughout the day and not just have a specific prayer time. Sometimes I hear a song on the Christian radio station, I make sure I worship. Sing along, give God some praise. I also will talk (not verbally, but in my mind) to him throughout the day, specifically when I walk to and from my job which is about 4 1/2 blocks.

A few months ago, I started to notice that I rarely feel sad or depressed when i am worshiping, talking with or focusing on heavenly things. So this has been popping into my mind every 3 days or so "You just need to keep your thoughts on me and what is above, because you never feel depressed when your focused on me". It's true.

Also, you should exercise. When you exercise, it releases endorphins into your brain. These are 'happy' type endorphins. Take a walk, see in nature the wonder of creation. I can't believe how long the birds that live in the trees by my house chirp. I'm like 'aren't you birds tired of chirping', I'd be tired, but they are happy as clams.

I hope this helps. I'll be praying for you. :prayer:

Trust that God works all things out for the good of His children. You have to learn to be content with what you have and know that God knows your hearts desires. Talk to God about it. Thank Him for what you do have. Things do get better in Gods timing not ours.
I would like to ask you a question but please don't think that I'm being argumentative because that is not what I'm trying to be. Am I to wait until God somehow improves my situation either by taking away my depression or giving me a better and more meaningful job or both even though I don't have any job skills?

We can't know that God will choose to totally heal us. I believe He will relieve us from its effects, but we do not know whether it is his will or not that each of us is healed.

We must try to be happy in spite of circumstance. We are of spirit even though we are human. That spiritual side is our home.

Well, for what it's worth I was told Friday by the client-the person that I answer to-that his superiors/bosses that they wanted the current security officers replaced with new ones. The term used was "clean sweep". He said that that can't or shouldn't be done because I know how to work the security systems and how to screen people for a rather important and well known company that is located in the building and his boss said then that will be left up to the new security company, that is if a new one is chosen. I know the other company and the person that runs it and I believe they will retain me if it comes to that. As for the other officers they most likely will not be retained. Sad to see that happen since one of them has been at the building for 10 years. Ever since the client/my boss told me this I've been somewhat and very worried. I am trying to keep up my faith but it seems that I need more. I know worrying is a sin but...

I listened to a sermon on my iPod by John MacArthur and he said just that-that worry is a sin.

((Hugs)) Pawnraider. I find worry one of the harrdest things to deal with. I think ToBeBlessed has made a good suggestion about focusing on God though. I feel a bit hypocritical saying that because in God`s presence I dont feel joyful. But maybe if I press on then the feelings will follow? My pastor`s wife says that will happen. do you have any hobbies you enjoy? That you can focus on when bad thoughts come? I find distraction can really help enjoy painting myself and hugging my guinea pig

I was just told by the client that most likely the they will go with another security company. It was suggested that I not be retained by the new company but he talked them out of it and I will be retained. The changeover may take place the first of the year. All that remains is for the new company to OK the contract. I don't know if it was the client or the security company that didn't want to retain me but thankfully he talked whoever it was out of it. And besides, someone from another company the security company works for said that they really like the job that I'm doing. The person that told me about the change said he doesn't know what if any benefits the new company has and I'm not sure but I may lose my health insurance. More later possibly.

It doesn't look like the other two officers will be retained though. One's rather young so it shouldn't hit him too hard if at all. The other officer though is somewhat older than me and he has a degree in Engineering. One of the reasons that he won't be retained is that he's not a very pleasant person. The company I work at has been losing a lot of people due to "restructuring" and the like. People who have been with the company quite a long time are being let go although there are others that have been here for just as long if not longer are still here, so far. All of this is so very depressing.

God sent Elijah to the brook in the kerith ravine where the ravens fed him, but then the brook dried up. In this world, our brooks will dry up. Then God sent Elijah to a widow at zarephath who hd almost nothing. Now you'd wonder why God didn't send him to a rich widow to be fed, but no problem, God immediately filled this poor woman's pantry up with more than enough for everyone. When the brook dries up, God's plan for you is already rolling. Don't start panicking about the dry brook. 1 Kings 17

I don't know if this helps or not, but there is a possibility that this god's way of telling you that it is time to move on to another type of job. For example, if you have depression, what you might need is a job that is more social, or some work in the service industry. Do you work alone a lot? Because based on the teachings of Jesus, we seem to be happier when we are working with or in the service of others. It is just an idea.

I don't mean to sound harsh but I'm afraid it doesn't help. I'm a bit of a loner and I am a bit eccentric as well. I guess this is a result of an emotionally abusive mother.

I was told earlier that the client decided to go with another security company. The new company will take over on Jan. 1st. The security company that I currently work for had some notable failures in the past and the person who finally made the decision said in so many ways that they weren't quite up to the job. I answer to the building manager and his boss made the decision to go with another company. The new company was told that they could retain me if they so desire but that decision would be up to the new security company. I know the person who own's/runs the new company that will take over and he was rather willing to retain me when he thought he would take over four years ago so hopefull he still feels the same now as he did then. One other officer from another building may be retained as well but the other officers will not. One officer who's a few years older suggested that we share an apartment to reduce costs but he's a nominal Christian, if that, and I rather doubt it would have worked out since he has some habits that would have grated on me. He's not a very pleasant person.

All this has been so very depressing. I know that the Bible says that God will provide for us and that God would provide for our every need but since this has been going on I've been filled with doubts.

No problem, I just try to help whenever I can. Maybe someone else has some better advice. I will pray for you, and hopefully god will answer those prayers.

Pawnraider, you live in Omaha, right? Metropolitan Community College is a decent school. Even if all you take is one or two courses per semester, it's something.

I use to go there but when you have a gpa of 1.4 I quickly and painfully realized that college is not for me.
