The two words that kill any geocentrist argument:

Stellar Parallax

Don't underestimate the ability of zealots to ignore evidence.

How long have you been debating creationists? It is only a matter of degree. Even AV has hinted that he could accept geocentrism, but for some reason the draws the line at a Flat Earth.

Why, then, do you guys bring it up?

Some of you even look for geocentrist posters here.

You say that as though you have a lot of personal experience debating geocentists. Are they really that prevalent on the internet?

Not "prevalent" but they're out there. They're up there with the small groups that believe in Nemesis, the NASA moon landing conspiracy, dad, etc.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if they're genuine or just really good fakes. Take this one, for example:

http://galileowaswrong.com/geocentrism-101/

Hard to say if this is serious, or just a flashy attempt to bilk money from ignorant home-schoolers.

STELLAR PARALLAX-ABERRATION IS GEOCENTRIC

Prof. James Hanson

It will be noted that both the Copernican and geocentric models give the same form for the net angular deflection of starlight from the line of sight,
ϕ
= constant
1
sin
at
+ constant
2
cos
at
. The source, sink, and vortex strengths can be selected so that the geo-centric coefficients give the same numerical value as the Copernican. In the geocentric model there is a single deflection dependent upon how the space intervening between the earth and the star transmit the star-light. And since the geocentric coefficient equivalent to the Copernican aberration term contains the stellar distance, it would suggest the stellar firmament to be a shell of no great distance. Furthermore, this term is shown to be a property of space as required by Airy’s failure.

The Bible believers of Copernicus' day stood in opposition to his heresy:

"There was mention of a certain new *astrologer* [Copernicus] who wanted to prove the earth moves and not the sky, the sun, or the moon. This would be as if somebody were riding on a cart and imagined he was standing still while the earth and trees were moving. ... This is what the fellow does who wishes to turn the whole of *astronomy* upside down. I believe the Holy Scriptures, for Joshua commanded the sun to stand still and not the earth." - Martin Luther

"The psalmist clearly affirm the sun to move. Ps 93:1." Philipp Melanchthon

"Those who assert the earth moves are motivated by a spirit of bitterness, contradiction, and faultfinding; possessed by the devil, they aimed to pervert the order of nature." "The heavens revolve daily (Ps 93:1 commentary) ... we experience no concussion." - John Calvin

WHY DO YOU REJECT GEOCENTRICITY?

Scripture: It's certainly not because of the scripture. The Bible is so obviously worded geocentrically that helio-heads have to become allegorical and appeal to nonexistent figures of speech, language of "perspective", God accommodating us by speaking in "our language" (AKA: lying), and other tricks to avoid taking the words for what they actually SAY. Things like "the sun arose", "the sun stood still", the moon stayed", the sun went backward", "the moon stood still", the sun moves in "circuits", and so forth.

If God wanted to convey geocentricity, He could not have done so more clearly. OTOH, if God wanted to convey heliocentrism, scripture easily could have said, "the earth stopped spinning", the earth turned backwards", or the earth moved in "circuits".

None.

And as an aside, the earth was created before the sun.

Back to our point though, the language of the Bible, when It describes observing the cosmos is the same language that we use today -- geocentric.

We speak of the sun rising and the sun setting, the sun coming up and the sun going down, because that is the simplest and fastest way to communicate: using the point of the observer as the reference point.

Thus the Bible uses geocentric language, but It does not teach geocentrism.

.

Some people arrive at conclusions too soon, without having the additional information needed to make broad claims, and present as fact in what people "believe". AV has pegged this problem many walk by.

I debated with a user on these forums who was a serious geocentrist. Stellar parallax is what changed their mind once and for all.
