Adding to the above

Let me clarify a few myths and make a few points:

1. It is NOT haraam to own a dog, though it is not hygienic to keep a dog in the house.

2. It is NOT haraam to touch a dog or any other animal. If the saliva of a dog touches you or any part of your clothing, then it is required of you to wash the body part touched and the item of clothing touched by the dog’s mouth or snout.

3. It is incumbent upon all Muslims who own animals, whether for farming or work purposes or as pets, to provide adequate shelter, food, water, and, when needed, veterinary care for their animals. Arrangements must be made, if one is going to be away from home, to have one’s animals taken care of as well.

4. It is haraam to keep a dog or any other animal on a short lead for long periods without food, water, and shelter. Dogs need exercise and are social creatures who form organized “family” structures in nature. Dog owners therefore need to spend time daily with their dogs.

5. It is cruel, and therefore haraam, to keep any animal in a cage so small that it cannot behave in a natural way.

6. Fireworks cause untold suffering to most domestic animals because of their acute sense of hearing.

7. It is haraam to participate in any blood “sport,” like dog fighting and trophy hunting.

No animal has been cursed in any way. Animals are referred to in many instances in the Qu’ran. In Surah Kahf, mention is made of the companions of the Cave and their dog. (S18: 18-22)

We would love for Allah to bestow His mercy upon us, so let’s show mercy and compassion to all His creation. This will also give non-Muslims a true reflection of Islam, aiding da’wah.

There are many Muslims who care well for their animals, and this article is aimed at those who are misinformed.

The appeal goes out to those Muslims: Please do not abuse or neglect any animal. This gives a distorted picture to others who are not Muslim.

May Allah be pleased with our efforts.

So, at least in the case of dogs, the problems seems to lie with extremist sects and their extremely narrow definition of their religion.
The same can probably be said about music and figurative art.

Unfortunately, it seems that these groups have gained considerable strength over the last few decades, since they thrive on their opposition to "corrupt western morals".

As for Music and figurative art. The majority of Islamic scholars are in agreement that Music instruements and the drawings of figures are
forbidden. Some exceptions are noted. Such as that specifically for children, what is needed for educational purposes and if it is needed to show a fact.

Like I said that is the general consensus, but no scholar I know of would state we are to destroy the Art or Muslic of non-Muslims. There is an example in the Ahadith when at prayer time a group of near by non-Muslims were having a wedding part with Music. Somebody asked Muhammad(saws) if they could go out and stop them. Muhammad(saws) answered no,

The vast majority of Muslims, Sunni, Shi'ite and Sufi are very moderate and non aggressive.

Our collection of assorted nuts seem to originate from one identifiable group that accounts for less than 1% of the world's Muslims.

But they certainly manage to do a lot of damage.

Unfortunately that is true. 9/11 required only 19 people and no purchased items. A handful of people and literally no money needed.

I think that is one reason for the extreme backlash. People can not believe a group with no world wide connection could do so much harm.

A very low budget plan that required nothing except a handful of volunteers.

I doubt if we will ever know for certain if any major group was behind it. I personally doubt it, as any bonafide military planner would have laughed at the idea.

It just does not seem logical that it could have happened. A very dumb plan that never should have worked. All the safety factors designed to prevent such, failed. The terrorists did not succeed, our safety system failed.

Yes, Woodrow, but they have shed rivers of innocent blood and caused oppression on every continent on Earth, save South America I suppose. It's amazing that less than 1% could bring so much misery and terror to mankind.

We are going off topic. Make a thread about the islamist moro insurgency in Philippines and I will talk about it. What will happen to the non-muslims in Mindanao when Mindanao becomes independent?

We know you hate me, and all other Muslims okay. You don't like it when someone points out the errency and evil actions, or hypocrisy of Christians, but hey, it's okay. We still love you.

That's correct. The extremist groups act out and try to hold onto a past, that is no longer needed. Islam at it's purest form, believes in the unity of all humans in the worship of Allah SWT. No racism, no violence, just one humankind living together in harmony with ourselves and Ma Nature.

Unfortunately, it seems that these groups have gained considerable strength over the last few decades, since they thrive on their opposition to "corrupt western morals".

That's because the media has given them that power, period. It's the extremists best weapon, particularly against the west.

For those that have a problem with Islam and Muslims. Is it the first world, third world or entire scene of islam/muslims that you object to?

I don't have a problem with Muslims but Islam and it's supremacist ideology.

Islam would be a matter of complete indifference to every non-Muslim were it not for its political and supremacist aspects, particularly the elements of Sharia that deny basic rights to women and non-Muslims and eliminate the freedom of conscience and freedom of speech. ~ Robert Spencer

Religion and state must be divided. Islam does not divide the 2, so if you are not a Muslim you suffer. Just look at the crazy laws in Muslim majority countries.

I actually feel very sorry for Muslims they are members of a violent cult made up by a self proclaimed prophet.

Mohammad was cynophobic.

Bukhari 3:515: Narrated Abu Huraira:
“Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle." Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for hunting." Narrated Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A dog for guarding cattle or for hunting."”

Bukhari Vol. 1, #490: Narrated 'Aisha:
"he things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, “Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people).” I said, “You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away, for I disliked to face him.""

Abu Dawud Number 704: Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ikrimah reported on the authority of Ibn Abbas, saying:
I think the Apostle of Allah said: When one of you prays without a sutrah, a dog, an ass, a pig, a Jew, a Magian, and a woman cut off his prayer, but it will suffice if they pass in front of him at a distance of over a stone's throw.

Makes me think Gabriel was not Gabriel but something evil because dogs can sense evil:
Bukhari 3:515: Narrated Abu Huraira: “I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."”

Sahih Muslim 5246: Narrated 'Aisha:
“Gabriel made a promise with Allah's Messenger to come at a definite hour; that hour came but he did not visit him. And there was in his hand (in the hand of Allah's Apostle) a staff. He threw it from his hand and said: Never has Allah or His messengers (angels) ever broken their promise. Then he cast a glance (and by chance) found a puppy under his cot and said: Aisha, when did this dog enter here? She said: By Allah, I don't know. He then commanded and it was turned out. Then Gabriel came and Allah's Messenger said to him: You promised me and I waited for you, but you did not come, whereupon he said: It was the dog in your house which prevented me (to come), for we (angels) do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.”

Sahih Muslim 5248: Narrated Maymunah:
“One morning Allah's Messenger was silent with grief. Maymunah said: Allah's Messenger, I find a change in your mood today. Allah's Messenger said: Gabriel had promised me that he would meet me last night, but he did not meet me. By Allah, he never broke his promises; and Allah's Messenger spent the day in this sad (mood). Then it occurred to him that there had been a puppy under their cot. He gave an order and it was turned out. He then took some water in his hand and sprinkled it on the place. When it was evening Gabriel met him and he said to him: You promised me that you would meet me the previous night. He said: Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. So the very next morning he commanded the dogs to be killed. He announced that the dog kept for the orchards should also be killed, but he spared the dog used for the protection of extensive fields (or big gardens).”

Nailed it.

Also, they don't like dogs. It's very unfriendly to dislike man's best friend.

I like dogs (cats more, though). I just won't keep one inside my house partly because their saliva is considered impure (which would make it a hassle to ensure that the entire place is suitable to pray, to wash clothes and/or vessels if the saliva touches us, etc.). And it's not like I need a guide, shepherd, guard, or hunting dog.

The Prophet told us, “Verily, a prostitute saw a dog lolling around a well on a hot day and hanging his tongue from thirst, so she drew some water for it in her shoe and Allaah forgave her.” [Saheeh Muslim]

Not really, but Christian sexism is less pervasive and less all-encompassing.

Wait, what?

In Islaam, women have inheritance, property, and divorce rights. Women are not basically considered "untouchables" when on their periods. We can also teach men. In fact, Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), used to teach others about Islaam in an honorable fashion.

Does that mean that the commandments are the same for both? Not always, since there are some that are specific to men and some that are specific to women. We are equal in terms of worship but we've been given different duties and/or rights in some instances. Generally it's the same, though.

Here are some things you might consider privileges that men do not have but women do:

1.) The Prophet was asked by a man who is most deserving of his fine treatment. The Prophet replied, "Your mother." ”The man then asked, “Who next?” He replied: “Your mother.” He asked again: “Who next?” He said again, “Your mother.” He again asked, “Then who?” He said: “Your father.”
[Saheeh al Bukhaari]

So not only is the mother mentioned first, she is mentioned 3 times before the father.

2.) A woman's wealth is her own. No one can touch it unless she gives permission. On the other hand, part of the man's income belongs to his wife. He MUST provide for her unless she waives that requirement for a certain amount of time. This means that we do not have to work if we don't want to (and if we do, the money we earn is ours) while the men have to provide and the money that they earn is partly their wives' money.

3.) Brides are given an agreed-upon dowry by the groom (not the other way around) no matter how poor the groom and how rich the bride.

4.) Men have to fight in wars, women do not (unless they are being directly attacked in which case they do).

5.) Women can wear gold or silk, men cannot.

6.) I don't know whether I can say these things are privileges, but they give us more flexibility: we don't have to pray in the masjid even if we are in walking distance (men do, unless the distance is too far), women get a 'break' from praying (though women can still supplicate, it's just performing the official prayers that we're exempted from) and fasting - meaning women can sleep in and/or eat during our month of fasting - when women are on their menstrual cycles.

7.) We can wear socks during Hajj!!!! (still blisters galore if one is not used to all that walking, but men cannot wear socks while in the state of ihraam, a state we enter during a certain period of the pilgrimage).

8.) The Prophet said regarding women, "Be careful with the fragile vessels."

9.) Women who die during childbirth are considered a type of martyr. Men cannot attain that type of martyrdom.

-It's very difficult to separate Islam from the culture around it

What do you mean by this?

-Islam has forgotten its golden age and (a lot of the time) has regressed to fundamentalism that's so rigid, people with new ideas are threatened or killed
It is strict adherence to Islaam that allowed us to reach our Golden Age (as known by the West). It is the abandonment of Islaam in its pure form (i.e. its fundamentals) that has brought us to the state we are in.

-It's iconoclastic. I love sacred images and Islam has removed a great deal of the sexiness and aesthetic beauty out of religion (unless you're counting calligraphy which can be rather beautiful)
There is such a thing known as "Islaamic art" - and it's not just limited to calligraphy, it's also present in our architecture. And then, of course, there is our poetry. But our religion is not meant to give "sexiness" or "aesthetic beauty" - our religion is meant to make us better people by turning to God.

Anyway, what about this?

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me [Exodus 20:4-6]

-No bacon and no dogs? I'm from the American South. You don't tell me that I can't have dogs and bacon. Period.
We're not telling you to. We don't because we believe in God and the religion He sent down to us.

And we can have dogs, they just can't be kept in the same house unless it's for a legitimate reason (otherwise we have one "unit" of reward deducted from our book of good deeds).

-Islam seems to be one of those religions that sits around waiting to get offended at anything and everything.
What do you mean by this?

-Islam glorifies wealth as a sign of God's favor. This is recipe for disaster and is the same thing as Joel Olsteen's ridiculous prosperity gospel.
Wealth and poverty can both be a sign of God's favor. In fact:

The Prophet said to a group of people, "....By Allaah, I am not afraid that you will become poor, but I am afraid that worldly wealth will be given to you in abundance as it was given to those (nations) before you, and you will start competing each other for it as the previous nations competed for it, and then it will divert you (from good) as it diverted them...."

and he said,

"...The rich are in fact the poor (little rewarded) on the Day of Resurrection except him whom Allaah gives wealth which he gives (in charity) to his right, left, front and back, and does good deeds with it....."

and

"Richness does not mean an abundance of wealth; rather, it is self-contentment."

All from Saheeh al Bukhaari.

He also said that the majority of the people from the dwellers of Paradise will be the poor.

I don't hate you or other muslims. I just don't like islamists. It's just that it seems kind of suspicious when you have military training, you are a musilm and you go to the mostly muslim indonesia which is a country that is currently occupying a mostly non-muslim West Papua. I have my suspicions about you.(I suspect either that you are training the indonesian military to help them occupy West Papua or that you are training an islamist jihadist militia like laskar jihad(they are still operating) to help them to commit hate crimes against non-muslims and to help them spread their influence to West Papua). Those are my suspicions but they may be false. Yes I know you are going to bring up non-muslims serve in the indonesian army. Did you know that FRETILIN has arab muslims as members?

Mari Alkatiri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My suspicions about you would be cleared if you told me what were you doing in indonesia.

By the way please do not tell me you were going to indonesia for a wedding. I watched Four Lions(it is a very funny movie) and two of the main characters(the four main characters are muslims) said they were going to pakistan for a wedding and it turns out the two of them went to pakistan to go to a terrorist training camp.

And the Christians are the ones killing Muslims. Neither is any better than the other. A killer is a killer They do not deserve being called anything except that.

Why are you generalizing all Christians? Are you a bigot? You also have no proof(in this thread) that Christians are killing muslims in Central African Republic.
