What's your opinion of piercings?

I hope this is in the correct category; I'm still relatively new to this forum, so I don't know if I have the hang of it yet.
What are your opinions about piercings? Like, what (if any) piercings are okay to have? Nose rings, snake bites, tongue rings, earrings, and the like. What do you think if you see someone with more than the normal ear piercing? What about different genders?

I believe that there is no good motive for piercings. Usualy when I see someone with tattoos/nose rings/earrings, I see a person who turns their focus off of God and onto themselves. Whenever someone tries hard to look beautiful or stylish, it means that they are valuing the things of the world. They may be Christians, but usually they don't have the kind of strong faith that I look up to.
I also suppose that if God wanted us to have metal dots all over, we would have been born that way.
i have known good Christian women who wear earrings, and I don't hold that against them. But I quit wearing earrings because I tend to focus on my looks too much, and wearing jewelry was making that problem worse.

So instead of "focusing on your looks" you choose to cultivate quite a holier-than-thou attitude for someone of such a low age and limited life experience.

I have three sets of earlobe piercings myself, plus a tattoo on my left shoulder/back. I also wear a "cap" hair cut and I henna my hair.

And darn straight I am "focusing on me" when I do "dress up." I am asexual/celibate and don't care to be in a relationship AT ALL, so I don't give a rat's rear if men notice me or not. I don't care if anyone compliments me or not.

And one thing I've noticed is that, when you dress for yourself rather than to catch someone else's eye, you end up getting more attention, and it's for a good reason. When I go out, I pair the three pairs of earrings plus matching/coordinating necklace and bracelets with ankle-length flowy skirts (if you've ever seen contra dancing you know the style I'm talking about), as opposed to dressing like a prostitute like a lot of women do when they "go out." Can't get through an evening without at least 2-4 people telling me how good I look; I was actually told once that I had a "regal presence" which really threw me! I much prefer that being said to me than the opposite happening - guys hitting on me and trying to pick me up!

God gave us the ability to do whatever we want with our body and so I say we should. If someone wants to wear something that expresses how they are, why should anyone say anything against that - least of all God? You can still live your life and still follow God. What's the point of living anyway if every single step has to be taken to please him? Doesn't our happiness matter to him too?

God gave us the ability to do whatever we want with our body and so I say we should. If someone wants to wear something that expresses how they are, why should anyone say anything against that - least of all God? You can still live your life and still follow God. What's the point of living anyway if every single step has to be taken to please him? Doesn't our happiness matter to him too?

We are not here to express who we are. We are here to glorify God. (1 Cor. 10:31)

Of course our happiness matters to God! If it didn't, He would send all of us to Hell. Our happines matters so much to Him that Christ died for us. And if Christ sacrificed Himself for us, shouldn't we be willing to sacrifice our pride for Him?

Because clothes are decoration for yourself. So are hairstyles. Unless you are dressing very plain, you are decorating yourself.

My choosing a white phone is not necessary or Biblical. My choosing a car with electric windows and cruse control is not necessary or Biblical. As long as something isnt anti-Biblical then there is nothing wrong with it.

"Do you have an arm like God’s,
and can your voice thunder like his?
"Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
and clothe yourself in honor and majesty"
So, if Job is like God than he should adorn himself with splendor. Since Job and I are both human, se should not.

In 1 Peter 3, Paul writes that, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight" This was addressed to women because in ancient culture, men usually ignored their appearance without being thus admonished. I believe that it applies to women and men, and in today's culture, some men really need to hear it. 1 Timothy 2:9 says a similar thing about dressing modestly and adorning oneself with good deeds.

I would also ask what the reason is in decorating oneself? I see no reason that we should take our focus off God and onto ourselves. I see no reason that we should spend our time and money on our appearances when there are so many better uses of our resources.

This doesn't really make sense to me. A white phone is the same as a black one. It doesn't cause different reactions in people and it will distract you just as well as a black one. "Should a car have electric windows" is a question that falls under stewardship. The issue I am trying to address is pride-specifically, that it is not right to focus on one's appearance.

Finally, we agree on something! This is what I have been saying all along.
The Bible says that pride is a sin. (Mark 7:21-23) Willingly and repeatedly submitting to pride by getting piercings, wearing makeup, wearing fashionable clothing, and other ways of adorning the self is anti-Biblical.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." Obviously, glorifying ourselves by trying to look cool or beautiful is anti-Biblical.

Does this make sense?

I don't follow the Bible word for word. Why? Because the Bible was wrote by MAN, thousands of years ago where if you research history man was controlling, frightening; overpowering to women. So, of course man decieved and made things to get what he wanted and that might not be the word of God himself. It's not false either, if it was wrote by someone. We used to be far more evil than we are now.

I don't know what a snake bite is? Oh, is that the split tongue? Personally, that grosses me out, but if someone wants to do that, then it's up to them. I don't like gauges either, but it's just a kind of aesthetic distaste, it's not for any 'spiritual' reason. I truly don't believe that demons can come and get you if you pierce your nipples.

The only extra piercing I would consider getting (I have my ears pierced) would be eyebrow or nose. I really like those. But then I'm too old to do that stuff. :)

The main issue I see is making sure that you find a fully licensed practitioner, that you read up on on what to expect and how to take care of the piercing, and you listen very carefully to the person who does the piercing.

Interesting, the "end of the conversation" is usually reached when I've cornered someone, but I didn't think you sounded stuck yet!

Anytime we are proud, we are insulting God. He made us to be humans, and He made us so that no one human is better than all the rest. When we try to be wonderful/unusual/better than others, we are insulting God's wisdom by disregarding the order with which He created us.

As for pride only being a problem when it is at the expense of others, I disagree. I believe Adam and Eve committed the sin of pride in the garden of Eden (They wanted to be better than they were, they wanted to be like God) And look how well that worked for them! Their pride was not at the expense of others, but God was upset with them anyway.

(However, I suppose you could claim that Adam and Eve's pride was at the expense of God. It would make sense to say that they were dissing God when they ate the fruit, and insulting His glory. But then it could be countered that since Adam and Eve were insulting God by trying to be greater than humans, whenever we are proud we are insulting God by trying to be greater than He created us to be.)

Are you really asking me such a question? You're just a year younger, surely you should know! Can you not see even how society has changed in the last FIFTY YEARS? Women's movements, equality between skin colour; in the last fifty years society has warmed to each other, and in the last hundreds of years you can see that too! Just study your history about real people. ANY person will tell you society is not as evil as it used to be.

Here's another example; hanging children. We don't do that anymore. We are growing to be kinder, more tolerant of each other whereas before we were not. That is why atheism exists stronger now than every before; because we are growing.

I'm still struck about why you need to ask me this question.

I asked you this question because I have completely a different theory. I wanted to see why you believe this before I explained what I think.

First, people haven't gotten any smarter. Let me give you an example with technology first. People in the modern world drive cars and use cell phones and people in Ancient Greece walked to their friends houses, but that doesn't mean we are better people. Learning is like a block tower, and people have been putting blocks on the tower of learning for over 2000 years. One of the blocks was put on when someone invented the 0; then somebody invented 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9 and put them on the block tower; and when Isaac Newton invented calculus he was building on the blocks that were already on the tower. The people who invented cars were building on that tower.

As for society? I think society just is as evil as it used to be. In America and England, it is usually evil on a personal level instead of a governmental level, but in some countries the government is terrible. In some Islamic countries, women are forbidden by law to show their faces or drive cars! There are places in the world where I could be put to death for being a Christian.

People themselves are still pretty evil! If we have turned into better people, then why are there school shootings now? My Mom doesn't have any stories about being bullied when she was growing up. I think people now are just as bad-tempered, selfish, proud, greedy, and mean as they were in Bible times.

The farthest I'd go is maybe a small nose ring. Sometimes they look nice. But, I don't think I could stand the pain. I have my ears double pierced and that's it. And, the 2nd holes have closed up and I think I need to get them redone.
