Jesus once turned down a rich man for not being willing to give up his belongings. I realize that this commandment was NOT universal, but I'm not sure if i am willing to make such a sacrifice if Jesus told me to.

Jesus has not asked you to do this so why are you making up your
mind to a question He has never asked?

But seeing how you did ask the question, let me put it this way....

What if Christ stood before you today and told you that you could either
keep all you have and go to hell or else give all that you have, including
your life into His care and come and be with Him forever, what would you say?

If it did the prosperity preachers on those TV ministry programs would be going straight to Hell.

As believers we belong to Jesus and that means that everything we own belongs to him too. He is allowing us to use it for our own needs but we must be willing to give up anything when he asks us to do so.

Mankind's future progress on inventions through science and technology should fire up our imaginations of what Christ's future-coming kingdom is like. Perfect clues are found in some of our most favourite inventions such as the television set, home computer, mobile phone that give magic or God-like supernatural performances and as we all know all of these things from wires to electronic components come from the soil:.
There are hidden supernatural secrets in the minerals, metals and chemicals from the very soil that God created and I believe that science and technology is heading towards God's sophisticated incredible supernatural science and technology known as "spirituality": the other hidden meaning to God's mysterious supernatural powers in Creation:.
For a moment there since becoming a Christian at 17 years old, the ancient holy bible had that old Greek mythological feeling to it and my thought theories about the kingdom of God turned out to be incredibly unsatisfying and depressing as I viewed God's kingdom as an ancient or non-futuristic city construction:.
It was only just a couple of years ago that I began to review my thoughts about the kingdom of God when I bought a full HD 50 inch plasma TV and bluray player, knowing that the entertainment home theater inventions do not remain the same as time moves forward, evolving into more sophistication and quality of picture and sound realism:.
I am totally convinced that God's kingdom is the most advanced community-built city in the universe with all the luxury design and architecture comfort that every wealthy enthusiast would want to live in, and when you compare our human contemporary inventions with God's supernatural inventions, it's like comparing our 21st century inventions to God's inventions that are light years ahead of our time .;'*';.

The rich man Jesus was talking to was probably already saved. He told him if he wanted treasures in heaven he had to sell his stuff and give the money to the poor. Do you want treasures in heaven?

People build up their supplies in order to take care of their families' futures. God knows that. At some point, people go beyond what they really need, and start amassing wealth to compete with other people, and appear better. Or to feed fears of never having enough/God not providing for us.

Jesus asks us to take care of others, defend and heal them, build up the downtrodden, stand behind the oppressed. If our goals conflict -- helping then tearing down -- then we don't really understand the kingdom of God.

It is likely not about amounts, but intentions and how we treat others.

If there is anything in your life that is very precious to you, and you fear losing that thing; confess your feelings. Write it on paper, talk to yourself, or tell a friend. Acknowledge any faults within yourself. Don't be afraid to admit to yourself that in certain areas you don't put Christ first. Remember, we are all sinners, conceived in sin, shapen in iniquity. Out of the heart proceeds all sorts of evil thoughts. Don't be afraid to admit the darkest of sins.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Forgiveness of sins, and cleansing from all unrighteousness is a wonderful reality, which gets better and better.
Such a wonderful reality is metaphorically described in the verses cited by the brother a few posts earlier on this list, in Mark 10:29-30. Jesus describes it in a way our carnal minds can understand.
Be encouraged, stay on course.
For great is your reward in heaven.
