Hi there BOM, and Drjean
Well i have thrown in the towel!
It's to hard! According to the "world" the augustine family from newport RI never exsisted! Sooo if they say so, it never happened? I imagined that whole side of my side of the family!

Seriously tho, just to time consuming. Plus my grand mother must have had changed some things around!!!

But thank you so much for you help!

Mom of 5,

This is a seven-year-old topic, so I don't know where you stand on the family history. Let me just assemble what you have;

1. You are 49, born 1962/63. Assuming that your ggrandmother died in 1922 when your grandmother was 12, that would mean your grandmother was b. ABT 1910, and your mother was born, say, 1936 or so.

Rhode Island was experiencing a surge of immigration around 1910, from Eastern and Southern Europe. You didn't mention your ggrandparents' nationality; but if they were South or East European, you might find them in the Ellis Island records. More likely than not, their names would not be spelled the way they were passed down to you. Also, they may have LIVED in Rhode Island at one time, but not have any records there. If you haven't already done so, go to a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Family History Center near you, and actually talk with a PERSON there. I have in my own research, and found them to be very helpful. If you've tried the "free trial" subscription to Ancestry.com, you probably have learned by now that you practically have to die, in order for them to stop automatically renewing your subscription without telling you. I got off the hook by changing my bank account. They provide lots of records, but these are also available from different sources. One useful one might be the WWI Selective Service records.

I was in the same position as you at one time, in some ways. I became obsessed about my family tree and couldn't find answers. That obsession made me narrow minded and when I let it go was when I found answers. It wasn't necessarily the answers I was looking for.

I had my grandfather telling us he was in jail and that was his testimony in Church but I found out he was pulled in for a night for a minor reason, never charged because the cop knew he was a good boy and caught up in mischief. But he made that night a lie and used that as a testimony in church.

Also I found that on my Grandmother's side, they pretended to be German until my great Grandmother's death. My Great Grandmother held this secret, I think because during the war, people in Europe pretended to be German for survival reasons.

Ancestors keep secrets and their past hidden for reasons of their own. Those reasons may not matter now especially when you are just looking for where you came from.

Take what you know about who you are, the traits you have and the need for feeling connected. The feeling you get when family has held truth from you, don't do that yourself. Connect with people and share the interest with others to make connections.

Thank you for those uplifting words!

For me though it was "more" about finding out the MYSTERY of the death of her parents!

And why if there was no secret behind it, she would not share it, and if asked she'd get angry! Which btw was out of character for her!

No family, or relatives to take her in?
Doesnt add up!!!

There was something she was ashamed of or wanted to keep hidden. Not fair to you but she kept truth from surfacing her whole life for her own reasons.

I gave up.... Could not find anything!
Now my uncle has passed away, and going through his stuff reminded me of this post!
I was hoping to unveil something in me going through his things he might has missed!
Nothing again

I just said a prayer and asked that the Father would assist you, and give you peace and Shalom
in this in the Name of His Son.

May it be so.

Yosef

I know this is such an old post.
My mom passed away, and now going through her stuff I found my grandmothers wedding invitation,it lists my grandfather's parents first then a mr & Mrs Sebastian Patti?
Wonder who they were?
Old photos and documents can be fascinating; my wife is into genealogy and family history; and "blasts from the past" can be very absorbing.

There are no old photos of her parents or of her until she met my grandfather.
But yes I agree old photo are a wonderful treasure
Yes, they are. While albums are good, a lot of ppl today manage to scan old photos and have them for reference digitally instead.

Some personal circumstances are special, I know.

Hi,

I also am going through my own genealogy and found this thread interesting...My mother also hid a lot from us, only later in life did she share more information.

My grandmother died giving birth to my mother, her sisters (my aunts) teased her through childhood saying she killed their mom...this really hurt my mom and she delved inward...She didn't know her father to well because he worked selling products even to neighboring countries (central America) and they had money so she was sent to boarding school....she didn't know her father until she was 7 years old...he was murdered on Xmas eve when she was 9. She hated Xmas because of that and was somewhat detached emotionally due to her early life....this is the reason people don't say things....its painful.

Your grandma losing her parents at a young age must of been horrible for her. But I do understand why you are curious and IMO you should continue your search.

Ask yourself these questions:
What is your nationality?
Where did your grandma live as a girl (was it only Rhode Island)?
Are there any phrases or sayings that she use to say? Some can be telling...
Did your grandpa ever speak of the past (like meeting grandma, etc...)?
Where was she married? The newspaper should of had some kind of announcement and the church would of had some documentation on it.
Lastly, ask your grandpa's relatives (siblings or fave nephew/niece) they may have more info....good luck!

How sad that must have been for your grandmother!
I'm glad she did open up to someone!

My grandmother would get angry or she'd say I don't want to talk about it. It would depend on who was doing the asking!
I have her marriage certificate, I even have her SS card (married name) she could have put anything on it back then no one checked.
All she said was they died she went to live with a GF because she had no family, that didn't work out, so about a year later she met my aunt, my grandfathers sister and moved in with them. None of them ever said they knew her story!
But she did mention her mother's maiden name, fathers occupation, and religion.
Oh the the street she lived on!
When the Rhode Island archives did there search, they came up with absolutely nothing!

If she went to live with this family then her family and their family probably lived very near to each other, probably went to the same school and church.

12 is very young, did her parents die or did they disown her? Pregnancy would do it...I know you didn't say any of this but I'm just thinking about it. Many young girls at the time were "sent away" to give birth and then return as if nothing happened

I would look into the school records and the local church for her area, it is also possible that she had a different name if it was an immigration thing. Research the census records of your grand dads family since she stayed with them.

If possible you should take a trip to the church and inquire in person.

I think looking up the census records of my grandfather would be a great thing!
Good idea!
As for her parents she said they died, would not say how, this was in 1920's so it is hard to find out info, they didn't keep records that good back then. But you know maybe she did not live in RI and lived closer to Brooklyn ny ?
Hmm maybe I should do one of those ancestory DNA tests!
