To my understanding the only way one could reasonably infer a 6000 year old earth is if one only references Bishop Ussher's calculations based on the Biblical Generations.

There is no reason to even estimate the earth to be so young based on the actual earth.

This would be a serious problem for me if I wanted to be a Fundamentalist of that stripe. Why on earth would God make the earth to give every bit of information indicating a deep age only to have it not be so.

Everytime I talk to YEC and then go outside and look around I feel kind of sad for the YEC. Such a shallow and meaningless world YEC results in. It is a potemkin village they inhabit.

And somehow it brings them peace and joy.

Like people who would rather visit Epcot than the real world.

Just sad.

Is there any reason to conclude that the earth is 6,000 years old, other than the bible? I've often said here that no one has ever examined the earth and concluded from that examination that the earth is so young.
Why does it even matter? Just curious....

Ya ... I'll never enjoy going to Pluto.

Not since it got demoted to the status of dwarf planet.

The greens just wouldn't be as green, and the whites as white.

Was this supposed to be "insightful"?

Creationists, even "Embedded Age" creationists have a potemkin village view of the earth. When I go out and look at a rock I see millions and millions of years of time, real, honest-to-God time. Not just "embedded" time. I see a planet infinitely older than my imagination can truly handle. I see forces at play that can bend rock without shattering it. I see chemistry intricately frozen in place revealing amazing truths.

When a Creationist looks at the same rock they see a "picture". A "fake" painting at worst or a "manufactured item with all these things 'embedded' in it but not really made that way through the mighty processes and time that were really there".

That's why I feel sorry for Creationists. Their world is so very limited. It's a potemkin village of sorts.

I can't imagine a God who deals in facades.

How do you know, Lucy? are you some kind of Miss Cleo wannabe or something?

For my birthday several years ago, my wife got me a 12x10 frame and had may favorite Psalm (Psalm 19) printed and inserted in it.

It hangs on the wall right in front of me.

In addition, she and I will see a peacock or little kitten or something and [jokingly] say to each other, "that's evolution".

You have NO IDEA how much more precious & meaningful the holidays are to us, now that we are born again.

If you think that's a Potemkin village, then you have a serious problem with projecting false assessments on to people.

It's an unavoidable comparison for anyone living in the real world who is presented with Bible literalist's view of the world. Simple as that really.

So you're forced to be wrong? no choice?

Reminds me of the Mark of the Beast, which will become mandatory during the second half of the Tribulation.

I said I felt sad for them for this reason. Obviously I can't know what you actually feel. But I also see no reason to deny one part of reality and how that will impact your joy in another part.

I'm talking about when I see the stuff on earth.

In addition, she and I will see a peacock or little kitten or something and [jokingly] say to each other, "that's evolution".

"Jokingly"? Why because the Peacock magically appeared ex nihilo? Frankly if I see a peacock and think about the steps that combined into forming such an incredible creature I think it is much more interesting.

If someone magically made a car appear in front of me and gave it to me, I suspect I'd appreciate it less than if I had to work to get the car and knew it was the product of someone's effort to make it.

You have NO IDEA how much more precious & meaningful the holidays are to us, now that we are born again.

What I don't understand is why being born again necessitates a simplified, unnuanced and, frankly, in my opinion, sad view of the earth as a potemkin village.

If you think that's a Potemkin village, then you have a serious problem with projecting false assessments on to people.

Not a fan of "God of the Facades". Doesn't feel like a theologically robust concept to me.

If someone magically made a car appear in front of you, you can be sure the car was already there, and he used mirrors or whatever to hide it.
