we have this report from London’s The Tablet magazine:
“A leading cardinal has said that same-sex relationships should be respected and recognised in law amid signs of a change in church thinking on the subject.
“Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, made the remarks in a lecture at the National Gallery evening titled “Christianity: Alien Presence or Foundation of the West?” on Monday.

“ ‘There can be same-sex partnerships and they need respect, and even civil law protection.
Cardinals McCarrick, Salazar and a well known cardinal from Argentina had previously come out for civil unions.

What's the difference?
A gay union is a same sex partnership, but not necessarily the opposite -- and something tells me that the cardinals are not condoning (at least publicly) a sexually intimate relationship between two members of the same sex.

I'm not sure I understand. Gay unions are understood to be sexual relationships, but same sex partnerships are not? Of course the Bishops are not condoning the sexual aspect of such relationships - but given that in general, these couples are sexually active, they do not oppose them having a formally recognized (by the state) union.

A partnership does not have to be sexual, even if our society would look oddly upon such a thing.

Doesn't matter what men might think--what matters is what God thinks and He made marriage to be one man and one woman for the purpose of raising begetting and raising the children. The Bible is already quite clear on that. And so is the CCC. We don't have to "reinvent the wheel". All we have to do is obey.

BTW, Pope Francis is for traditional marriage and family.

I think that the Cardinals mentioned recognize that, even though they do not condone the gay lifestyle, stable, committed relationships are better for society than widespread promiscuity.

Just as they realize that the rejection of marriage by many heterosexual couples (and the prevalence of divorce for those who do marry) can create problems for society as well.

Hey AMDG! Where have you been stranger?

 Back. Good to "see" you all. I've been having to deal with some nasty medical consequences of Obamacare (yes, I know it isn't completely "in place" until the end of the year but various parts are already "in play".) On top of that, husband gave up on old computer because it wasn't behaving nicely and we ended up with another that has a different operating system. To add to that the vet. gave my present dog the "e" diagnosis back in January (which we haven't taken up on and we are presently just counting days with her.) IOW I doubt that I'll be as active on OBOB.

Concerning the marriage thing of this thread, there's this article:

Marriage Is What It Is - Clash Daily :: Clash Daily

I know it's from a secular site but it includes excerpts presented to the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith by then Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI and now Pope Emeritus.) Says it was one of the best appraisal on marriage.

If he is recognizing any kind of relationship at all whether gay marriage or civil union he is going against scripture.

I'm so sorry to hear of your problems AMDG. I've had the medical problems of late as well & I had to have a cat euthanized a few days ago. Spend time with your precious pup & take care of yourself. Prayers for you. :crossrc:

Since when does scripture speak anything against having a platonic relationship with another human being? I find "gay marriage" to be an oxymoron, but a civil union does not have to have any fornication going on within it.

I think we both know these relationships are not platonic nor are they seeking to change the definition of the God given institution of marriage so they can engage in a platonic relationship.

I understand that those seeking "gay marriage" are most likely probably not looking for a platonic union, but I a civil union could be had between two members of the same sex, even non-gay people, with an entirely platonic context. I'm sure it's not common, but it would be legit.

I think it is terribly naïve to think that the people who want to redefine marriage are in platonic relationships. Platonic relationships existed before and the members of them have never felt called to redefine what marriage is. IMO this is something else. (In fact, if the relationship was indeed platonic, there would be no need to even attempt redefinition of marriage. Instead, the people involved would use legal documents to assure transfer of property or hospital visitation rights--just as traditionally married folks now have to do.)
