We must know what defines a bigot and Webster's does a good job for us.

1913 Webster's Dictionary
"A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion as unquestionably right, and any belief or opinion opposed to or differing from them as unreasonable or wicked. In an extended sense, a person who is intolerant of opinions which conflict with his own, as in politics or morals; one obstinately and blindly devoted to his own church, party, belief, or opinion."

To do something blindly means without preparation, experience, or knowledge. To be obstinate is to hold stubbornly and perversely to an attitude or opinion against reason.

To be a "bigot" is to act contrary to the biblical instructions given us.

“The faith that you have, have as your own conviction before God. Blessed are those who have no reason to condemn themselves because of what they approve.” (Ro 14:22 NRSV) [This refers to 'anything', not just food, v21]

You want control on end of life issues, make a living will or medical directive for yourself and stop meddling in the affairs of others. You don't approve of any abortion, then don't have one! You see homosexual acts as sinful, don't do them, but mind your own business.

“He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.” (Pr 26:17 AV)

“Now we hear that you have some among you living quite undisciplined lives, never doing a stroke of work, and busy only in other people’s affairs.” (2Th 3:11 Philips)
or
“For it has come to our ears that there are some among you whose behaviour is uncontrolled, who do no work at all, but are over-interested in the business of others.” (2Th 3:11 BBE)

Even with those who are our friends and neighbors, do not intrude to the point of meddling or being an obnoxious presence.

“Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house, otherwise the neighbor will become weary of you and hate you.” (Pr 25:17 NRSV)

To label religious meddler a bigot may be clear and true discernment, but condeming someone to hell, as many do in the evangelical community, is forbidden judging!

Not all said by OP is true but it is true that people often care more about rules and laws than people. That's what I think OP was trying to get across.
What the OP did was paint with a broad brush preaching against what he was doing himself. I think his point was tolerance. The problem with tolerance is that you never take a stand against anything. The kind of tolerance he was espousing was the kind that made Sodom a place where the judgment of God fell. Christ Jesus the Lord never tolerated or condoned sin. He forgave it.

The suicide of Rick Warren's son is an example of the hypocritical bigots I am speaking about, this topic is suicide. The web site 'patheos' quoted some so-called Christian's comments on this and I give a couple.

"Train up your children in the way, live a godly example with right priorities, care enough to home-school despite the great sacrifice involved, don’t let them date unchaperoned, have daily family devotions, turn off the 1-eyed idiot, TRULY HAVE A PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE, and your children WILL NOT COMMIT SUICIDE, nor will they be involved in homosexuality, nor fornication."

"He killed himself, it’s much worse than fornication or homosexuality or Onanism or eating pork. He denied himself a chance to get better. If your kids need a chaperone to date, why do you let them date? They shouldn’t be dating if they are not mature enough to control themselves."

"He could not save his own because Mr. Warren does not truly understand how his own heart works, how it is broken and the mechanism by which Jesus laid out the example of how to fix it. Matthew killed himself because he did not understand either. He was a victim of his own ignorance and the ignorance of his family, friends, society and Christians around him — presently!"

What ignorance! Such bigotry about a situation they have no knowledge about at all. I find such comments all too common among fundamentalists, nouveau Calvinists and evangelicals.

No, my point was "mind your own business!" and take care of your own sins and life problems.

Which is just another way of saying you must tolerate the sin in the society you live in.

Let's use your own example of a prior post where you wrote:

"The kind of tolerance he was espousing was the kind that made Sodom a place where the judgment of God fell."

We see in that story itself where the people of Sodom were going to rape the visitors. I do think any civilized society has laws against rape and that is not in question. But, to see further the sins of Sodom, which of these will you put into law, or dictate to a neighbor how to obey it:

“Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw [good].” Eze 16:49-50

So, you are going to judge the amount of "pride" a neighbor has? What scale are you going to use on that? Or, how much do they eat? Maybe you and Mayor Bloomberg can be nannies together over other people's diets. How are you going to tell others to budget their time? How about their charitable giving, you'll dictate that as well?

You are missing the entire point of the OP! In the USA, we do not have "religious tolerance", we have RELIGIOUS LIBERTY! To tolerate presumes a superiority of your view over others. In the USA none is superior to others under our law.

Church of the Firstborn or Church of the First Born may refer to:
  • A phrase or title found in Hebrews 12:23
  • Different religious groups.

What on earth do the LDS sects named "Church of the Firstborn" you listed have to do with this OP or me? In my "About me" section as a church I listed a name of the universal church, the church catholic:

“and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,” Heb 12:23 NRSV

“to the company and assembly of the first-born in heaven enrolled, and to God the judge of all, and to spirits of righteous men made perfect,” Heb 12:23 YLT

To be a "bigot" is to act contrary to the biblical instructions given us.
To call people bigots is to act contrary to the rules of this forum.
You want control on end of life issues, make a living will or medical directive for yourself and stop meddling in the affairs of others.
So as Christians, to not be considered bigots by you, we need to allow for the contract killing of the elderly, because that's and end of life issue? How about if your neighbor decides to kill his wife? That's an end of life issue for her.
You don't approve of any abortion, then don't have one!
We don't want to be forced to pay for them. We don't want to see 3,500 babies per day murdered simply because they are not wanted. We don't want our nation blackened by infanticide. You are saying that we should simply watch mass murder and keep quiet about it because it doesn't concern us. Who was your high school principal, Pol Pot?
You see homosexual acts as sinful, don't do them, but mind your own business.
Jesus commanded us to preach the gospel to all the world, which includes sharing the truth of Biblical teaching with homosexuals. Saying nothing and allowing a sinner to be lost without even trying to help because you don't want to get involved is NOT what Christianity is about. That doesn't mean that you hate them. You try to save them out of love.

You are using Bible verses out of context to promote a lie that is contrary to the Scriptures. That's called blasphemy.

By the way. People condemn themselves to Hell by rejecting the offer of salvation. All we can do is to warn them.

I do not recall calling a single individual a bigot on here. Now, some surely must think the shoe fits by how they replied in knee jerk fashion.

Some statements are not worth the time to key out an answer!

I believe the following Baptist statements among others, do you?

"By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and angels are predestinated, or foreordained to eternal life through Jesus Christ, to the praise of his glorious grace; others being left to act in their sin to their just condemnation, to the praise of his glorious justice."

"These angels and men thus predestinated and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished."

"Those of mankind that are predestinated to life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of his will, hath chosen in Christ unto everlasting glory, out of his mere free grace and love, without any other thing in the creature as a condition or cause moving him thereunto."

Roman Catholics and Baptists believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ, Son of God, God incarnate. That doesn't mean we are kissing cousins. In fact, most Baptists would say Roman Catholics don't have much in common. There are very valid reasons for that belief. And, the Roman Catholics have their own forum apart from Baptists.

A good friend here once called me an "Orthodox, Reformed, Fundamental, Olde Tyme Baptist".

I guess in your opinion, since I am affilated with Fundamentalism, I'm a bigot.

So be it.

But I do beg to differ.

While abortion is a very hot topic here, homosexual behavior is addressed in scripotures.

And for somebody to preach against it is to make them a "bigot" is laughable.

In todays society, homosexual behavior is the accepted "norm", as seen in many denominations acceptance and ordaination of homosexuals into the pulpit, but God wasn't so tolerant of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah was He?

That is what is wrong in America today.

To many people being too "tolerant" and not stand up for God's word teaches.

Surely, Sodom and Gomorrah will have a reason to complain.

God Bless

TIll all are one.

I do not think the op was calling any individual bigoted . and i can see what is being said .

some jump in defensively so quickly that they did not consider what is being said .

i would word it quite differently

i say that we should be far more active in taking a stand FOR the Gospel
where by we build the kingdom of God .

as opposed to taking a stand against what the world does . the world is not of the kingdom of God - the world (system) will not be changed ..it will be overthrown and destroyed by the coming of the king of kings - the LORD JESUS

to many hours protests and years of bitterness have resulted from standing against the wickedness the wicked do

if we reversed that to simply make known the Gospel and let GOD converts the hearts we would be spending our days in a far more beneficial manner -
we are called to preach the good news - not coerce change by force of the will of the flesh .

the weapons of our warfare are NOT CARNAL but SPIRITUAL ...
if you use carnal methods you will pitt flesh against flesh and you will not walk in the Spirit of God ,which is LOVE .Nor will you ever win a soul for the lord .

thus far has ANYONE ever heard a testimony of an ex gay who said - "these christains were waving signs and fingers in my face about my life being sinful and i was so convinced i surrendered my heart to the lord Jesus " ???

ever wonder why the wicked hate the protesters ?
you may say it is because they do not like being reminded of their sin .. but is that so? the bible says God gives them over to a reprobate mind ..a seared conscience - they cannot even see their own sin .

i think they hate the protesters because that is the example they are being shown - an example of anger and hate .

no ,again i say - let us give ourselves to standing FOR the GOSPEL (the good news of the lord Jesus ) and less time standing against that which is already destined for destruction .
