[NOTE:I will separate this from my Jubilees Timeline simply to make it easier to discuss. This is the timeline for both occurrence of the 1335 and 1290 Days in prophecy. I have used Hdate, Josephus and Scripture to build this time-line. Please feel free to discuss.]

Timeline: 42 Months of Revelation, 1335 & 1290 Days of Daniel

  • And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. -- Daniel 12:11-12

  • And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. -- Revelation 11:1-2

  • They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. - Jesus Christ, Luke 21:24

TIMELINE

3593 H.Y. (169-68 B.C. [143rd year of the Seleucids]) Deduced from the time-line of Josephus corroborated with Daniel 12, upon 25 Iyyar (June 1, 168 B.C.) Antiochus IV captures the city of Jerusalem--viz. Josephus Antiquities XII:5, 4.

3595 H.Y. (167-66 B.C. 145th year of the Selucids]) the daily sacrifices cease and the Abomination of Desolation desecrates the Altar of the Temple of Jerusalem when Antiochus IV sacrifices swine on 25 Kislev [15 Kislev according to Maccabees] (Mon. Jan. 12, 166 B.C.) -- Josephus Antiquities XII: 5, 4.

3597 H.Y. (165-64 B.C.) 11 Cheshvan (Mon. Nov. 7, 165 B.C.) the 1290 Hebrew days of the Abomination of Desolation is ended when the Temple is cleansed by Judah Maccabees. The 1335 days is fulfilled on the evening prior to the the first day of the 8 day miracle of the Lights of the Menorah and Feast of (Re)Dedication of the Altar (Hanukkah) upon 25 Kislev-2 Tevet (Tues. Dec. 20-27, 165 B.C.)--viz. Josephus, Antiquities XII: 7, 7. Jesus Christ is born in Bethlehem and circumcised 8 days later (Tues. Dec. 19-27, 6 B.C.). In 3789 H.Y. (A.D. 28), Jesus appears in Jerusalem at the first of Hanukkah upon 25 Kislev-3 Tevet (Wed. Nov. 29-Dec. 6, A.D. 28)--John 10. Beginning from the evening prior to the first day after Hanukkah, which came upon 3 Tevet, 3727 H.Y. (Tues. Dec. 7, A.D. 66), to the evening prior to the day of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, which came upon 10 Av, 3830 H.Y. (Sun. Aug. 3, A.D. 70), there are exactly 1335 Hebrew days, thus concluding the prophetic Parabola of Daniel 12:12 and Matthew 24:15-16.

3827 H.Y. (A.D. 66-67) 6th year of the 6th Sabbath Year prior to the 2nd Jubilee of the Christian Advent. Vespasian orders the destruction of Jerusalem during the Feast of Dedication (Hannukah) A.D. 66. Titus most probably begins his march toward Jerusalem around 10 Sh'vat (Wed. Jan. 12, A.D. 67). This is deduced from Josephus corroborated with Scripture. For Josephus writes that Titas begins to march toward the end of the winter (i.e., indicating Sh'vat the last month of the sleeting season before Adar the first month of early planting season) with the explicit purpose of carrying out Vespasian's order to destroy Jerusalem--viz. Josephus Wars IV 11, 5. The Siege of Jerusalem by Titus Vespasian begins during Passover week, 14-21 Nisan 14 Nisan 3827 (Fri. April 15, A.D. 67) to 8 Elul 3830 (Sun. Aug. 31, A.D. 70) -viz. Rev. 11:2; 13:5; Josephus, Wars V 3, 1; 13, 7: VI 4, 8; 10, 1. So in all, there are 42 months from Kislev 3827 through Elul 3830 in which Jerusalem is being given into the hands of the Gentiles.

Kislev-Tevet 3827 [1st month of the Siege of Jerusalem. Beginning on
the evening of Sun. Nov. 28 (25 Kislev, Hanukkah), there are 34 days
counted of 1335 through the end of Dec. According to Biblical prophecy
that the Times of the Gentiles would last 42 months, Vespasian's order
given to Titus to destroy Jerusalem should have gone out in the month
of Kislev and most probably was given during the 8 days of
Hanukkah/Feast of Dedication A.D. 66. with 25 Kislev being the most
probable date the order went out. It would appear that Vespasian was
aware of the history of Jerusalem and that this was the most ominous
date in the Jewish mind, being the very day upon which Antiochus
Epiphanes had committed the Abomination of Desolation during the times
of the Maccabees.]

Tevet-Sh'vat 3827 [2nd month of the Siege of Jerusalem. 65 days of
1335. Beginning on Wed. Jan. 12 [Sh'vat 10], 45 days after the fist
day of Hanukkah, there are counted 20 days of 1290 through the end of
January. According to the timeframe given by Josephus, Titus most
likely begins his march toward Jerusalem in the month of Sh'vat,
toward the end of the rainy/winter season in Judea. This gives Titus
about a month and a half (45 days) to muster his legions and assemble
his war machine for the long siege ahead.]

Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

The 42 Months of Revelation 11:3 and Revelation 13:5, the 1335 and 1290 Days of Daniel 12 are still unfulfilled. They are end times events, not first century.

3593 H.Y. (169-68 B.C. [143rd year of the Seleucids]) Deduced from the time-line of Josephus corroborated with Daniel 12, upon 25 Iyyar (the evening prior to Thurs. May 2, 168 B.C.) Antiochus IV captures the city of Jerusalem--viz. Josephus Antiquities XII:5, 4.

3595 H.Y. (167-66 B.C. 145th year of the Selucids]) the daily sacrifices cease and the Abomination of Desolation desecrates the Altar of the Temple of Jerusalem when Antiochus IV sacrifices swine on 25 Kislev (Mon. Jan. 12, 166 B.C.), thus beginning the 1290 Hebrew days -- Josephus Antiquities XII: 5, 4.

Jesus Christ is born in Bethlehem and circumcised 8 days later 159 solar years later to the day (Wed. Dec. 20-27, 6 B.C.). In 3789 H.Y. (A.D. 28), Jesus appears in Jerusalem at the first of Hanukkah upon 25 Kislev-3 Tevet (Wed. Nov. 29-Dec. 6, A.D. 28), 190 lunar years to the day from the first Feast of (Re)Dedication--John 10. (Sun. Aug. 3, A.D. 70), there are exactly 1335 Hebrew days, thus concluding the prophetic Parabola of Daniel 12:12 and Matthew 24:15-16.

so there are two fulfilments, one in the days of Antiochus, and another in the days of Titus-Vespasian?

I believe that the 42 months, 1335 & 1260 days have already been accomplished long ago as Christ explained the events surrounding his coming on the clouds in judgment against Jerusalem.

Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. -- Matthew 24:34.

Therefore, we know that they must have taken place within 40 years of Christ speaking that prophecy, for 40 years was one generation.

The 1335day and 1290 days in Revelation 12 take place at the time of the end, distinguished by many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. It is not talking about 1st century, but our time.

4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.
6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?
7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

The king in Daniel 11:36 is the Antichrist in the last 42 months of his reign. The Jews, those who heed Jesus's words, will all have fled to the mountains, and those who did not flee in time will be persecuted for the time, times, and half time in Revelation 12:14-17. Until Jesus returns in Zechariah 14, splitting the Mt. of Olives in half, to rescue them.

That the Mt of Olives is still intact should tell you that the events are still future.

As a side note, I don't know where you are getting that 40 years is a generation. Are you basing that on the 40 years in the wilderness back in Exodus? If so, those persons were already adults, so 40 years added to them, put their generational age in the 60's-70's range.

@Doug,

I think you might be blending some scriptures together that may not be discussing the same events. I believe it is clear that the events described in Dan. 9, 11 and Matt. 24 (except for the later half, which is in fact talking about the Final Coming) have been fulfilled. They do not pertain to the final coming, which is yet future, but they pertained to the Jews, the ending of the Old Covenant and beginning of the New. I've simply provided a time-line for anyone interested in seeing when those events took place. To state that all these events are future is to ignore the events of the past that have been clearly and explicitly fulfilled.

I am talking about Jesus' coming a second time. The first century events were prophesied concerning the destruction of the temple, Matthew 23.

But those events have nothing to do with the Matthew 24 abomination of desolation (referenced back to Daniel 12) because in Matthew 24 prior to that time, the gospel has to have been spread throughout the entire world, to all nations.

Which in the first century, it had not.

I believe that all the events in Matt. 24 up to verse 34 were fulfilled by A.D. 70. The rest of the chapter characterizes what the times will be like until the final coming of the Lord. That being the case, I suppose this time-line could be described as being Partial Preterist (very partial preterist). I don't really mind this seeming middle of the road view inasmuch as I think that's where the truth is.

Paul writes, "[T]he gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;" - Col. 1:23. If Paul writes this some time before 68 when he was martyred, then the gospel must have been preached to all the known world by that time.

It is not necessary for every living person in the world to hear the gospel for it to be preached to all "nations" in the Jewish meaning of nations (GOYIM). The only thing that is required is a representative of each kind of ethnicity. If Thomas had reached all the way to India, and even Scythians were present on the Day of Pentecost, this was certainly accomplished by A.D. 70. When Christ states, And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations (Matt. 24:14), He is speaking in the Jewish sense of nations being (i.e., GOYIM: types of people, races, gentiles). He does not mean that the gospel must be preached in all physical locations, but only that it should be preached to a representative of each kind of race or tribe.

We have 100% 20-20 hindsight, to know that was not literally the case, and that Paul was speaking in hyperbole.

Everything after Matthew 24:14 is end times.

I believe that Matthew 24 can be clearly and naturally divided into two parts to answer the original question of the disciples that Jesus was addressing. Matt. 24A appears to be up to vs. 34 "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." This part is to address the disciples and Jews of Christ's own time in that generation and the things that would be coming surrounding the destruction of the Temple, the topic of conversation that he is talking about here.

Then in 24B, Christ begins speaking about a time after that generation, a time when there would be no signs at all in vs. 35 "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away: but of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." This does not describe the former part of chapter 24, that came with very clear signs in a judgment upon Jerusalem.

As a side note, I don't know where you are getting that 40 years is a generation. Are you basing that on the 40 years in the wilderness back in Exodus? If so, those persons were already adults, so 40 years added to them, put their generational age in the 60's-70's range.

Doug

There are many allusions in Scripture to God's dealings with generations through roughly 40 year intervals.

Even Josephus had this basic Jewish understanding of a generation roundly being 40 years in writing in Against Apion 1.33, "Moreover, Cheremon sets down Joseph as driven away at the same time with Moses, who yet died four generations before Moses, which four generations make almost one hundred and seventy years."

Josephus is speaking in round numbers of 40 years per generation.

Christ being contemporary with Josephus would have had the same basic usage of 40 years. In regard to the Judgment of Jerusalem, it came exactly 40 years after Christ had uttered the prophecy that that generation would not pass till all these things were accomplished -- 3790 H.Y. (A.D. 29-30) - 3830 H.Y. (A.D. 69-70)

A Biblical generation is a span of time of 40 years, not necessarily the age of a person or persons.

Well, the prophecies will be fulfilled before that generation passes - to me, that is dies off.

How old was king David when he passed away? How long is a generation in Pslams 90:10?

I'm not disagreeing with you. Jesus is saying that before those then living within the next 40 years are all passed away, all these words of prophecy that he has just uttered concerning not one stone being left upon another of the Temple will all be accomplished.

This is precisely what occurred. He doesn't state the exact time, but by saying 'this generation', he does indicate that it would be sometime during the next 40 years. It came at the very end of that 40 years.

I am not used to that :). Sorry.

I don't have a problem with the temple being destroyed as being fulfillment of a prophecy that not one stone left on the other.

What I am disagreeing with you on is the use of the parable of the fig tree generation to support it.

We know from 20-20 hindsight that the gospel has been spread to all nations around the world (2) that our generation people run to and fro, and knowledge is increased (3) that the Jews are back in the land so Gog/Magog can take place (4) that Jerusalem is back in the hands of the Jews so they can eventually say blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

So when we read at the end (Matthew 24:14), it is in context of the end times and on the global scale is those times are limited otherwise no flesh shall survive. It is that generation the budding of the fig tree (Israel) and the other trees Luke 21:29 (the nations in place making up Gog/Magog as listed in Ezekiel 38) that shall not pass away.

The Fig Tree is not discussing physical Israel in Christ's parabolic usage. It is discussing spiritual Israel, the disciples of Christ. Christ uses the fig tree to describe the salvation of the disciples he was talking to in escaping the coming judgments against Jerusalem. He is giving them, his disciples, the reassurance of peace and salvation, not physical Israel.

The powers of heaven being shaken describes the revolution of the world order. This is the taking away of the former covenant and the bringing in of a new covenant and order. Matthew 24:1-34 describes the events leading up to and surrounding the judgment of Jerusalem and physical Israel. It is the final dealing of Christ with the Jews as a whole people. Since that time, all things have been raised up to spiritual planes and God puts no difference now between Jew and Gentile, but both may be of spiritual Israel in Christ. This is New Jerusalem, not old Jerusalem. To pray for the peace of Jerusalem today means nothing else but to pray for the Christian church. For all things have been raised to the spiritual plane in Christ

These things came about in the first century, unless you're suggesting that a Biblical generation is 2000 years long and that the people living when Christ spoke have not passed away, and I don't think you would suggest that. Too, we know from Peter that 'no prophecy of scripture is of anyone's private interpretation'. We must use scripture to interpret scripture. In Matthew 24, Jesus Christ himself does not even break that rule, for he says, “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains." Christ here gives the definitive, inspired interpretation of Daniel's prophecy, and therefore the book that Daniel sealed up is now being unveiled by revelation of Christ and pertains to the surrounding of the Roman armies and the last and final desecration and desolation of the Temple of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.

Matthew 24:1-34 pertains to the fulfillment of Daniel, the judgment of Jerusalem, the taking away of the former covenant and the bringing in of the new. Actually, Matthew 24 should probably stop with verse 34 and the rest of Matthew should be joined together with chapter 25. For Christ here is answering the final question of the disciples when they asked concerning the signs of the end of the world. And clearly, Christ is attempting to explain in this final exposition with parables that there are none at that time. Everything after vs. 34 in Matthew 24 is truly speaking of the characteristics of the new age after the ending of the commonwealth of physical Israel in A.D. 70. It is even as Josephus wrote in his Wars of the Jews, "but, as for that house, God had long ago destined it to the fire; and now that fatal day was come, according to the revolution of ages: it was the tenth day of the month Lous, [Ab] upon which it was formerly burnt by the king of Babylon." -- Josephus, Wars VI 4:5
