In Part 6, Romans 10 is pointing out Israel failure as God's people to recognize their Messiah
Having summed up Israels failure to seek God by faith, the apostle now expresses his desire for Israel to be saved, despite their seeking their own righteousness. Romans 10:1-3:
Brethren, my hearts desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.
2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.
3 For not knowing about Gods righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
As stated before, having fallen into a system of works righteousness, Israel had failed to have faith. When Jesus came as Messiah, the Pharisees and Sadducees had fought Him at every turn thinking that what they did made them right with God. We read that throughout the gospels.
Paul now turns to Moses in Romans 5-10:
5 For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness.
6 But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down),
7 or Who will descend into theabyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
8But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heartthat is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
This is how we come to faith in Christ! We confess from our heart and have no trust in what we do when it comes to salvation. It's faith in God's promise alone.
Moses had instructed Israel to have faith. After entering the Promised Land, Israel began their decline from God after the death of Joshua. Israel had fallen from faith to a system of works righteousness! Paul quotes Moses in Deuteronomy 30:11-14:
11 For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach.
12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?
13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’
14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
As the apostle continues, he moves to the confession of faith, that leads to salvation:
Romans 10:11-13:
11 For the Scripture says, Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;
13 for Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.
In light of the New Covenant, the apostle again tells us God makes no distinction between the Jew and the Greek (Gentiles). God is calling from all nations! Also within this passage the apostle quotes Isaiah 28:16 (vs 11) for clarity I include that passage:
Isaiah 28:16-18:
16 Therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
17 I will make justice the measuring line And righteousness the level; Then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies And the waters will overflow the secret place.
18 Your covenant with death will be canceled, And your pact with Sheol will not stand;
When the overwhelming scourge passes through, Then you become its trampling place.
This is the promise of the Lord Jesus and the New Covenant God gave through Him! Notice that Isaiah prophesies the end of the Old Covenant as well as Israels judgment (vs 18). This is very clear in Isaiah 28.
Paul further quotes Joel 2:32 (Romans 10:13). Joel 2 prophesies Christs coming, as well as the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Peter quoted Joel 2:28 on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2. Joel 2:1-11 speaks to Jerusalems destruction at the hands of Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar. God also prophesied Israels return to the land, the coming of Messiah, and the salvation of all who call upon Him at Romans 10:13.
Paul now asks interesting questions in Romans 10:14, 15:
14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those whobring good news of good things!
How is the world to hear the gospel of Christ, unless it is preached? This is why Jesus gave the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18, 19, and why we as disciples are to share the gospel!
The apostle quotes Isaiah 52! A tremendous passage which announces the restoration of Israel/Jerusalem, and the coming forth of Messiah to preach the gospel! Paul has quoted Isaiah 52:7 (Romans 10:15). Look at Isaiah 52:6-9:
6 Therefore My people shall know My name; therefore in that day I am the one who is speaking, Here I am.
7 How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, Your God reigns!
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices, They shout joyfully together; For they will see with their own eyes When the Lord restores Zion.
9 Break forth, shout joyfully together, You waste places of Jerusalem; For the Lord has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem.
Clearly Israel and Jerusalem was restored! Christ came as Messiah to the Jews and their rejection of their Messiah led to the gospel going forth to all nations as Christ announced the New Covenant!
The apostle now begins to speak to the fact that Israel rejected Christ due to lack of faith in Romans 10:16-21:
16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report?
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; Their voice has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.
19 But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation, By a nation without understanding will I anger you.
20 And Isaiah is very bold and says, I was found by those who did not seek Me, I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.
21 But as for Israel He says, All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.
Make no mistake! Israel was given every opportunity to believe but they lacked faith! At verse 16 the apostle quotes Isaiah 53:1. Isaiah 53 is Christ coming as the suffering servant of God, who would bear the sins of the world, a passage we are all familiar with.
At verse 18 the apostle begins to show that Israels rejection was not due to lack of knowledge...but a lack of faith, and he makes the point quoting Psalm 19:4. That Psalm testifies of Gods revelation as given in nature and through His word!!!
At verse 19 Paul further makes the point that Israel was told by Moses, and he quotes Deuteronomy 32:21. Deuteronomy 32 is a song God gave to Moses as a testimony against Israel in the day they had turned from God. It testifies of Gods turning to the Gentiles from Israel.
Lastly, at verses 20 and 21 Paul quotes Isaiah 65:1, 2:
I permitted Myself to be sought by those who did not ask for Me; I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me. I said, Here am I, here am I, To a nation which did not call on My name.
2 I have spread out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in the way which is not good, following their own thoughts,
That is the call of the Gentiles by God. As well as Gods statement of Israels rejection of Him..
If you read all of Isaiah 65, you will notice that God says He will save those of Israel that would believe at Isaiah 65:8-10 where God says:
8 Thus says the Lord, As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, Do not destroy it, for there is benefit in it, So I will act on behalf of My servants In order not to destroy all of them.
9 I will bring forth offspring from Jacob, And an heir of My mountains from Judah;
Even My chosen ones shall inherit it, And My servants will dwell there.
10 Sharon will be a pasture land for flocks, And the valley of Achor a resting place for herds, For My people who seek Me.
This is the poetic prophecy of the remnant of Israel that God is always saving!!!
