Less than three percent of priests have actually been accused of sexual abuse, which is a lower rate than for public school teachers.

NCRegister | Teachers Vs. Priests

“Sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests” | Wizbang

More abuse by, but less reporting about, public school teachers - phillyburbs.com: Guest Opinions: guest opinion, roman catholic church, priest sex abuse, public school teacher abuse,

Given the media's under-reporting of sexual abuse in public schools compared to their sensationalism of the Catholic priest scandal, one could ask:
Is the media biased against the Catholic Church?

Teachers do not put themselves on moral pedastals like the priesthood does. Hypocrisy sells better, so that is what they go with. The local butcher cheating on his wife is not nearly as intriguing as Jimmy Swaggart doing the same.

There are over six million teachers in the US and only about 410,000 Catholic priests in the entire world. So, let's not try to mislead by misusing statistics.

The Catholic Church made this problem into a super scandal.

When teachers are caught, they get prosecuted and fired. You rarely see adults coming out with disclosures of being sexually abused by teachers decades ago.

Do you seriously believe that covering up of sexual abuse hasn't happened in public schools? Regardless of whether you are Catholic or Protestant, don't you see it an alarming trend that the media seems to be so anti-Catholic? Is that evidence for a disdain of Christianity in general in the media?

At a higher, adminstrative level like it did in the Catholic church? No, I don't. Do you really think that your state department of education is knowingly moving sexual predators from one school to another to keep people from finding out about sexual abuse? If there were such a program in education it would grab headlines, no doubt about it.

Public school teachers have a better union.

Heck, when absurd allegations are made against teachers they often end up losing a lot, and that has been going on for decades.

The McMartin case comes to mind.

Also can anyone come up with a case where a teacher is accused and then transfered to another school? Generally the closest is they are allowed to resign and find a new district. Irresponsible of a district, but not actively helping cover up the abuse.

They are anti-hypocrisy.

Bolding mine.

Though to be fair very few school districts even have an administrative level as high (and far removed from the actual abusers). It would have to be at the state level at the least. I'd be very surprised to find a coverup that high up.

The Penn State sex abuse scandal is an example of a school actively covering up sexual abuse from the top down for years.

It got some press as I remember.

Generally people who are thought well of in the public eye like priests or Joe Paterno being involved in something like covering up child sexual assault gets press.

Just like the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, if this incident got reported, how many incidents go unreported? Remember, it took years of coverup from the top down before anyone said anything about Penn State.

Therefore, the media is anti-Penn State because they covered it, correct?

The media is anti-Catholic for over reporting the priest scandal while under reporting cases of sexual abuse in other institutions, such as public schools. Remember, less than three percent of priests have been accused of child molestation, which is less than that of public school teachers.

In my view, it's more like they sensationalize the priest scandal because they are anti-Catholic and want to find a way to discredit the Catholic faith. The liberal bias often found in the media would cause them to under report sex abuse cases in public schools, given how favorable liberals are of the public education system.

Or, it could be you're Catholic and don't like being associated with child abuse, so you're trying to rationalize your leader's crimes by saying the media is just being unfair to them.

You mean public schools like Penn State?

Remember, less than three percent of priests have been accused of child molestation, which is less than that of public school teachers.

Priests were also moved around by Catholic officials as part of a cover up. That is why it was reported on so heavily.
