CNN Uses False Footage of Police Charge in Breaking Sandy Hook Report

Busted by Google Earth and the Internet. CNN clearly represents footage as Sandy Hook, takes place in the context of a cut to Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police at a press conference. At :50 seconds. Script runs:

Vance (at press conference): "Off-duty troopers responded to the school, and with Newtown police immediately upon arrival, entered the school and began a complete active shooter search of the building."

As the report cuts to the charging officers, the CNN voice-over says:

"They arrived to carnage."

Footage of police rushing building is not Sandy Hook. It is St. Rose of Lima School, a private school a few miles away, in Newtown.

A close examination of the landscaping, parking lot markings, and the distinct curvature of the sidewalk reveals that no such terrain exists at Sandy Hook Elementary School. However, a Google Earth satellite photo shows the true location almost beyond a reasonable doubt...It is not known whether the rush to the building of the seven officers seen in the clip is a drill. Also unknown is when it took place.

The GPS coordinates of the area of the St. Rose of Lima School in question are: latitude 41.415154, longitude -73.297764. The street address which can be entered into the Google Earth search box to find the location is 40 Church Hill Rd, Newtown, CT.

Maybe a mistake-sent to wrong school or went to wrong school in error.
Or maybe to ensure this wasn't a multiple attacker terror event?
Maybe they got a report of suspicious behavior?

The news in the chaos didn't catch it.

I believe it was a nearby school that the police went to that day as well.

Police swarmed St. Rose of Lima School on Church Hill Road in Newtown Friday afternoon, hours after the shooting at nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School.

If you look at the google satelite view of that school, the front of the school looks similar to the pictures posted in the OP.

The two schools are less than 1.5 miles from each other (by road; much closer as the crow flies). So it makes sense that if a helicopter was circling around, they could see police activity at the other school and focus in on that for a bit.

ETA again: Whoops, didn't read the whole OP which mentioned St Rose of Lima. But yeah... the police were apparently sent to that school on the same day, and said school is right down the street from Sandy Hook Elementary. So what is the problem? Or did they decide to use it because it's more dramatic? That's a lot of license to take. The big deal is they said it was Sandy Hook they were "arriving" at and it wasn't. Could be an honest mistake, but so was the one that got Dan Rather fired. When you are reporting facts to the public they need to be facts all the way, not just some.

No, actually, he doesn't say that. What you (and others) are complaining about is a second-long clip of B-roll stuffed into a bunch of other footage from that day.

Could be an honest mistake, but so was the one that got Dan Rather fired. When you are reporting facts to the public they need to be facts all the way, not just some.

Dan Rather's information was the foundation of his story. If Anderson Cooper was doing a piece on the details of police tactics employed at the school that day, and used that footage as his primary evidence, THEN you'd have a legitimate comparison.

No family members permitted to view the deceased? Have you seen any evidence of one single lifeless body, video evidence of a shooter, or even one bullet hole in the school building? I didn't think so.

Where did that happen? The video linked in the OP was not presented as LIVE - it was clearly a recap of the event with various bits of video from the day interspersed to tell the narrative of what had happened. At worst, it was someone figuring that the dramatic footage they did have of police storming a different building (but part of the same overall event) looked better. Most likely the person putting the video together didn't even bother to check whether or not that particular bit of video from that day was actually Sandy Hook Elementary- it just matched with what was being said.

Journalists at one time were tasked with providing factual reports and being responsible for not only reporting factually but checking their work and their sources to make sure that untruths did not inadvertently appear. Too bad the quality of journalism has fallen to the point that someone can say that it's no big deal if the report contained misinformation. Do journalists, that seem so offended when they are accused of being no more than partisan cheerleaders that report only whatever is convenient for their own side, not understand that being precise and meticulous would go a long way to dispelling that opinion or is the opinion correct and since they see no political advantage or even a political disadvantage to being precise and meticulous they are not bothered in the least by the poor quality of the work they do?

Mislabeled LOL. All news footage has a time stamp. Whoever put together that footage could easily see it wasn't when the police "arrived" which was around 9:30. It's not someone flying around up there with a cheap Sony camcorder, but some very expensive equipment with time stamp information which tells you exactly when it was shot.
