6,000 year old earth theory conflicts with the speed of light.

We all know God created the heavens and the earth in 7 "days". That's what the Bible says. One can assume that means the universe.

My question is this: if one is to take the Bible literally about how it was created, that would put the earth at around 7,000 years old.

The speed of light in vacuum, commonly denoted c, is a universal physical constant important in many areas of physics. Its value is 299,792,458 metres per second, a figure that is exact because the length of the metre is defined from this constant and the international standard for time. In imperial units this speed is approximately 186,282 miles per second.

Given the distance (on a cosmological scale) between stars, it would take MUCH longer than 7,000 years for the light of those stars to become visible to the human eye in our solar system. Hundreds of thousands of years it would take for light to travel at 186,282 miles per second at those distances.

So how is this? If the earth is only 7,000 years old, all those stars in the night sky would not yet be visible to us because their photons would not have reached us.

Whatever the case, our God is big.

This idea that it cant be 6 days because of the speed of light assumes 1 thing that is a very fundamentally flawed assumption... that God is bound by the laws of Physics... Which is not true. He is out side the laws of Physics. WE are not but he is.

God can make light appear from where ever he wants. When he wants...

AND he can make things show up in our world AFTER creation. Because before the flood rainbows did not exists. Neither did Rain...

It depends if you mean it’s a problem for creation or a problem for creationism. Creationists tend to read Genesis 1 as pure literal history. However this is not the way the Hebrew was written and there is strong grammatical evidence to suggest so.

In Genesis 1:2 the normal Hebrew sentence construct of conjunction, verb, subject and object differs. This is done for two main reasons: 1 poetic licence to introduce a new concept and 2 when written in the pluperfect tense. Josephs rendered the text of Genesis 1:1-2 as: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth; but, the latter not coming into view. . . .” In other words from the view point of the earth. This would make perfect theological sense, as God is describing the creation of the dwelling place for man and not giving an exhaustive literal history of the universe, as creationists tend to limit this text to.

Creationist’s theories center around 3 main ideas:

1: Creation of light in transit. Scientifically, totally speculative and should just really be called “the God did it” theory.

2: Speed of light changes over time. Needs no falsifying as the simple equation E=MC^2 invalidates it. If the speed of light (a universal constant that doesn’t change) did alter to accommodate 6000 years, then the Earth would now be burnt to a cinder.

3. The assumption that the universe is boundless in 4D hyperspace via Copernicus principle and red shift is incorrect, and the universe is actually bounded in 4D hyperspace is correct. This would result in a centre of mass in the early universe capable of producing a time dilation, as per Einstein’s theory of relativity. This is the most scientific hypothesis so far and the metric sort of works for 6000 years. The hypothesis is falsified simply because of the empirically observed speed of the far universe. Creationists get round this by proposing a special creation week, ending by God stretching out the heavens. As it stands it is basically an elaborate “God did it” theory with a mix of pseudoscience.

Why can’t we just take the word of God as it reads? The creation of the dwelling place for man.

God created plants before he created the sun and moon. Scripturally plants represent God’s provision for man and the sun and moon represent the ordering of man’s days. God made every provision before he ordered our days. Perfect theological sense. And as Genesis 1 says, God is the creator of the heavens and the Earth.

If the earth is only 7,000 years old, all those stars in the night sky would not yet be visible to us because their photons would not have reached us.
Genesis 1:
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

If the stars were created to shine light on the world, for signs and for seasons, it wouldn't make much sense to have to wait a few thousand years for the light to get here. As the stars appeared at God's spoken word, so did light. This is perfectly consistent with the laws of physics, which apply to the creation but not to the Creator. The same God that can freeze time for a day could easily create things as he desired.

Imagine that you're an author and in your story you choose to have a knight on a horse burst from a boulder at a full gallop to rescue the princess. Someone tells you that can't happen. You answer that's it's your story and you can do anything you want. God has the same mastery of the physical world, which He created. He knows all the characters and He knows how the story ends. Unlike the characters in a book, God gives us free will. However, there is nothing that exists which He didn't create and no force in the universe with dominion over His will.

"Six Days"! -not "seven", BTW.
No assuming neccessary, for the Word states that the heavens were not stretched out from the earth -as the starting poit of them- until day 2.

The Word of God states that the light was brought into being on day 1, making an evening and a morning, with earth itself as the fixed in place starting point of Light's "being", and the heavens revolving around the globe of earth making an evening and a morning =one day.

Your problem is looking outside the Word's Revelation for some doctrines that are clearly refuted in Genesis 1, itself.
The heavens were not stretched out from the earth until day 2, and they were stretched out between the waters of the globe, with half of them below the stretched out heavens and half of them lifted up and above as the heavens were stretched out, and half of the waters of creation being then, above the heavens in which there was not yet a sun nor a moon, until day 4.

The Light brought into being on day 1 is not the sun, and the sun only governs the Light, as an electric Mennorah for the entire creation.

So, no, the light did not ever start somewhere out in the universe. according to God's revelation, but was stretched out with the heavens on day 2 of creation, between the waters, in which heavens the sun, moon and stars are set.

In Gensis 1, God defined a day as an evening and a morning ="one Day".

A note on the speed of light: it is a proposed constant based on constants of permeability and permittivity in electrodynamics. It is a constant, but it is the constant speed that photons travel in a "vacuum," which isn't a vacuum in its most raw definition. In reality, the speed of light is a concept - not so much a limit. It should really be called "the speed of a photon, c, in a vacuum." There are theoretical particles called tachyons that travel faster than the speed of a photon in a vacuum, c. Neutrinos exhibit the Cherenkov Effect when they travel faster than the speed of a photon in media such as heavy water.

Tachyons are a theoretical particle; there existence has not been established. The speed of light (or photon) is the speed limit of the universe and it is one of the six universal constants.

The Cherenkov Effect is an effect due to the phase velocity component. There are many other effects like quantum tunneling. However the speed of light remains constant as the limiting speed according to modern day theory of relativity.

Jason Lisle, PhD astrophysics and young Earth creationist, actually made a very good argument with the speed of light vs the age of the universe. If you dig around on Youtube or something, you'll find it.

I'm a theistic evolutionist, but I did find his argument quite interesting nonetheless.

Light was stretched out with the heavens, on day 2 of creation week, in the revelation given us in the Bible.
God does not lie.
We are a supernatural creation living supernaturally in a supernatural universe upheld supernaturally by the Creator.
Light was brought into being right here, on earth, before the heavens were stretched out between the divided in half waters of creation.

Light is stretched out in expanding space; it’s called “red shift”. To stretch it out in one day, would drastically alter its frequency. It would no longer be light and that degree of frequency shift is implausible.

It's all about context. Genesis 1-3 brims with symbols and awe. For example, to take Genesis literally is to say that Satan is literally a serpent, yet later in the Bible, he is described as a beautiful angel with 12 wings.
It gets to the point where you have to concede that the Beginning is as Revelation- symbolic and mysterious.
