The ultimate in irony (especially if you are over 35).
These days, there are few few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bare arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions.
This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items. People carried them concealed, they carried them holstered. Fighting knives were a prominent part of many traditional attires and those little tubes criss crossing on the costumes of Cossacks and various Caucasian peoples? Well those are bullet holders for rifles.

Making fun of people's English when that is not their first language is totally uncool. When you speak better Russian than they do English, then let's talk. It means they really are Russian, and if they say they were freer under the Czar than under Lenin, it's probably because they were.

By "socialist" he must have meant capitalist. Maybe it was a translation error because I can't believe anyone would think the US is socialist seeing as how the means of production are not owned collectively.

what was wrong with the english. The tzars in modern russia ruled from 1547 to 1917. serfdom existed in parts of russia until 1907.
People will be suggesting that the spartens promoted freedom next.

He's saying Lenin and Stalin were worse than the Tsars whom preceeded them, and actually he'd probably be right.

Also in some ways, the Spartans kinda did promote freedom in some ways, in other ways they did not.

Generally a Spartan had to survive to being the age of retirement for fighting before they got to enjoy said freedoms though.

Women enjoyed significantly more freedom in Sparta than in the other Greek City states for instance.

well you could flip a coin on the first point.
intrestingly the massive slave population of the spartans, the helots, were forbidden to be armed. young spartans in training would infiltrate helot society and gather information for the annual war that sparta would wage to keep the slaves in check.
basically sparta fails on just about every measure of freedom promotion.

Stalin killed more of his own people than the Tsars ever did...

The also did random murders of Helots as well, yes I'm very well aware of this, which is why I said that in some aspects Sparta did advocate freedom, but in other respects it did not.

You do realize however that you just demonstrated why our 2nd Amendment is a good thing.

Not entirely true, they were way ahead of their time when it came to women's rights...

stalin educated more russians than the tzars ever did..... which of course is just as irrelevant a comparison as yours considering the topic.

i dont think the 2nd amendment is a bad thing. it is however used as a reason to resist recognizing the issues caused by the 2nd amendment.

spartan woman did 'womans work' just the same as woman in most cultures, the only difference is what was considered 'womans work' by spartan culture.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they've already successfully taken guns away from Americans. During Hurricane Katrina, National Guard (plus military who weren't National Guard) went around door-to-door and took legally acquired guns away from gun owners who were in their own homes, defending their own property, and that's with the second amendment still being around. They were extremely successful. VERY few people will put up a fight when they have military types kicking in their doors. I have no illusions that the tough talkers are any different on that score. Sure, it will make it easier on our government to legislate guns away, but they really don't need to do it to take away your guns, Americans. They've proven they can once before- so doing it again won't be much of a concern for them.

they probably were not as jealously possessive of their women, since to judge by the Sacred Band and more general Spartan military practice they cared more about their brothers in arms than their women. Spartan men could not live at home with their wives until the age of 30 - until then they lived in barracks
