A pro-life Catholic group has won a legal battle in court to get an exemption from having to comply with a federal Health and Human Services contraception mandate.

The mandate compels some religious employers to pay for and refer employees for birth control, abortion-causing drugs and contraception in violation of employers’ religious beliefs.

Last week, attorneys Robert Muise and David Yerushalmi presented oral argument in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in support of Priests for Life. The next day, the federal government entered into a stipulation that it would not enforce the HHS mandate against Priests for Life pending a revision in the rules that would protect religious liberty.

It was a PR stunt or a waste of legal money by Priest for Life who were exempt to begin with.

Also, the HHS mandate is still be re-written, and other institutions such as Catholic Colleges and Hospitals, will also be exempt.

i knew that all along but geez ppl sure got their knickers in a twist over this
saying its the end of freedom and saying the govt treats catholics like the nazis treated jews

Well, conservatives and those trying to create political bias against Obama.

However, the mandate was being worked on when it was first released and has been continued to be so.

My guess is that the HHS is fighting with the insurance and pharmaceutical corporations over it.

You might want to check it out since according to the Bishops, not even Jesus and the apostles would qualify for that exemption. I think it's because Jesus' mission (and ours too) is to folks regardless of their religion. We don't just serve other Catholics. That's why Catholic colleges and Hospitals are not exempt. The Little Sisters of the Poor will be "run out" of business in the U.S. because they cannot afford the fines for not providing abortifacients and birth control in their health care insurance. Then there are a number of Christian colleges and business which are also effected.

Just like that one judge said, there is no 'wait and see and trust the government to make things right clause' in the Constitution. This devestation is coming at us like a locomotive speeding the track.

The HHS mandate was going to cover Catholic Hospitals.

The Bishops were talking about the original language when the HHS mandate first came out. It was modified since and is still being modified and
the court just ruled on the Belmont College case.

During oral arguments before the appeals court, attorneys for the Obama administration asserted the administration would rewrite the HHS mandate and would not enforce it against religious institutions such as the two colleges. The appeals court stated in its ruling that the government

represented to the court that it would never enforce [the HHS mandate] in its current form against the appellants or those similarly situated as regards contraceptive services. There will, the government said, be a different rule for entities like the appellants, and we take that as a binding commitment. The government further represented that it would publish a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the new rule in the first quarter of 2013 and would issue a new Final Rule before August 2013.

We take the government at its word and will hold it to it … the petitioners’ lawsuits should be held in abeyance pending the new rule that the government has promised will be issued soon.

Upon consideration of the foregoing, it is ordered, that in reliance upon the Departments’ binding representations, this court will hold these cases in abeyance, subject to regular status reports to be filed by the government with this court every 60 days from the date of this order.​

Though there is no guarantee that revisions to the HHS mandate will be to the colleges’ satisfaction, Belmont Abbey College President William Thierfelder hailed the decision.

Plainly - the above quote from Jim - shows only a college - and not even possibly satisfactory as of yet!
