This is the most interesting topic I've seen in this forum, props for that.

Don't you guys feel like a theocracy could mean a system/country ruled by God? I feel like it's just crazy that most people here have voted "no". Wouldn't you want to live in a country where God has put himself 100% in charge and no human government?

No, it would mean we'd be ruled by a pastor or pope in God's name. Read Martin Luther's doctrine on the two kingdoms on why mixing both the spiritual (Church) and physical (State) is a bad idea.

I would only support it if it was ruled by God directly. Meaning in person.

I wouldn't accept any pastor or pope abusing any power on God's behalf.

And I agree, but blasphemy, man? I just don't think a lot of people would put up with it if someone walked into a church and compared Jesus to Harry Potter, even if that church was open to all. You know what I'm sayin'?

I wasn't claiming any such thing. If you want to make accusations, please at least make them accurate.

Also, my offer still stands. If you want a retraction, please show how my claim is false. That's all I require.

They wouldn't. Which is why theocracy is a bad idea. Theocracy means rule by religion. Were this country to be ruled by one of its many religions (most likely some strange form of protestantism that arose independently from how America was founded), I'd dare say would be a terrible country.

As for blasphemy laws, I am completely against them. Say what you darn well please against whichever prophet you choose, whether it be Muhammad or Jesus or Moses. Bottom line, theocracy is always a bad thing.

Creech is in favour of allowing local communities voting to become theocratic.

The consequences of that would be that minorities who happen to live there having the rights trampled on and being forced to move. It would create small pockets of religious apartheid in specific communities.

Got it. No I'm not for that but are you sure Creech is for that. I am just for people who voluntarily live together in small peaceful communities bond by religious practice and law. Here in Iowa that would be the Amish.

I am for people with like minded religious beliefs forming their own communities based on that religion, much like the Amish do.

Here

So if a community voted for a mini-theocracy in their community what do you think would happen to the religious minorities that live there?

A lot of the rhetoric around here about the state of American politics seems to bemoan the fact that the US is a secular state with freedom to have your own religious and moral views.

I am wondering who here would support a theocracy and why.

the·oc·ra·cy (th-kr-s)
n. pl. the·oc·ra·cies
1. A government ruled by or subject to religious authority.
2. A state so governed.

I never could support such a system of government. This style of government is contrary to the values this country was founded on.

That's fine as long as their local laws don't violate the US, or their state Constitutions. The 14th Amendment of course, stipulates that every person must have the equal protection of the law. And every state constitution, to my knowledge, has language preventing government from showing preference for any particular religious belief, sect, or mode of worship.

So if a community voted for a mini-theocracy in their community what do you think would happen to the religious minorities that live there?

Ah...I don't quite think you understand where we are coming from on this subject. It is not about a majority imposing religious beliefs on a minority but rather all the people of the same religious tradition forming a community based on the peaceful practice of those religious beliefs. Religious minorities play no role in what we are discussing because they simply are not part of the community. In fact the religious communities are often formed because they are the minority and wish to separate themselves from the larger majority.

So if you don't follow the Bible or believe in God why are you even here?

No reason to insult my faith, thanks.

Especially since this is a Christian forum. Know your place.

I'm calm, so are the 100 forum members reporting you and your little friend for blasphemy right now.

Go to an atheist forum if you want to mock the Christian God.

And you are not Christian, as you've made very clear, and yet you come to our forum and insult us by comparing our religion to a Harry Potter book. I'm sick of seeing Christians be stepped on and people get away with it, I gotta draw the line somewhere. I'm afraid your user account will pay very dearly for this.

Over the course of the thread, kelkel, you have managed to proffer a very good case against a theocracy!

If the forum were not sitting somewhere on a server but was, in fact, our great nation, eventually citizens of this country would be held liable for their blasphemies!

One's "user account" could be citizenship, or even, life!

Well done!

But of course, only if it's your religion, right? What about Muslims? Do you support Muslim communities within the US under Sharia law? What about satanists?

Well, that was the kind of Theocracy the OP was talking about. Now you know why so voted no. :D

I don't think anyone would directly state that they want a theocracy. But when they say that they'll only vote for a candidate of one faith who enacts laws based on scripture and governs according to the Bible, well... If it walks like a duck...
