I'm interested in the BSD operating systems, as they're more free and open than linux and definitely mac and windows, my issue is their logo, Freebsd in particular is a demon/devil looking thing and it bothers me a lot. Netbsd, and Openbsd all pretty much share this logo in some form and they call it a daemon, which is geek for server and similar to the word demon.

Is this a big deal? Or am I overreacting?

to see what i'm talking about http://www.freebsd.org/ also the slogan "the power to serve" is really freaking me out...sigh

Is that pronounced the same as Daimon (DAY-mon), a Ferengi captain?

As to the logo thing, it depends on how seriously you take logos, really.

Anyone remember that logo Proctor & Gamble used to put on their products that people said was devilish?

Don't read anything into it. The little devil guy is just a mascot playing off of 'daemon' and they are just trying to convey that FreeBSD gives you the power to serve -- whether serving content, applications, services, or whatever. :)

PS Where are you running into restrictions with Linux? It's free, open source, and with an arguably larger user base...

Well GNU/Linux is heavily GPL centric which forces open source and as such isn't as free as it could be IMHO. LGPL is better but still isn't as good as BSD license which is permissive and is completely free. I'm a huge fan of BSD, Apache and Mit licenses, so wanted to run bsd on servers for a nice changeup from linux. There are 3 main bsd's and unfortunately all have specific goals and aren't created equal.

Netbsd's goal is to run on everything, from toasters to other exotic hardware, and it's not really ideal for servers which is my interest in bsd, it lacks some important things.

OpenBSD which I was hoping did what I needed is known for security, being used on routers and stability, sadly its server support is ironically not very good, doesn't even utilize multiple cores and it's slow...Just talked to users they told me optimization isn't a goal of OpenBSD.

Freebsd is the ideal bsd for servers, it's the most popular bsd in general and focus is on servers and it utilizes all features i'd need. The problem is as much as I'd like to use it the logo bothers me way too much, and talking with users online they think it's funny. I can see how people view it as harmless but i'm sure that's the trick of the evil one to disarm The Lords sheep, Adam and Eve probably thought eating the apple was harmless too, at least that's what the evil one convinced them of. Maybe one day if/when they change their logo i'll take another look at it, but for now i'm stuck with linux.

There's a software company called Oracle.

The definition of Oracle is: an oracle was a person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic predictions or precognition of the future, inspired by the gods. As such it is a form of divination.

And if you've ever noticed, the Apple Computer company's logo is an apple with a bite out of it. (Like the apple that took down Adam and Eve.)

Apple computers is not being original with their company logo,

And

But by jove! apple computers will beat the crap out of you if you dare to use a apple as your logo. In Australia a company (Woolworths) has the following as its logo and apple computer's lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to them ... which has been ignored of course :)

Yeah, but that one doesn't have a bite out of it. (In my opinion) the universal symbol of the "fruit of the garden".

I think that some people have a tendency to force symbolism where there is none. If you think about any symbol enough, it can be twisted to mean just about anything, and it is only by ascribing a meaning to a symbol that we give it power.

Personally, I feel like this is one of those situations - they're using the two meanings of daemon to make a cute logo for their company. The fact that it's a little devil is really immaterial given the subject matter and focus of the company. However, if you really find it to be that disturbing, simply don't use their product. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and a right to consume only what they wish to consume.

I can guarantee you that the company won't change their logo based on the input of a single customer.

Really i'm forcing symbolism? The thing looks like a devil, they can call it whatever they want, it's pretty obvious what it is, nothing is forced IMHO, is more than obvious. "The power to serve" slogan just added to the creepy satantic feel of it and it's really sad because as I said and you said it has nothing to do with the project. While i'm not implying it was put there because of occult reasons what I do know is this type of stuff shouldn't be taken so lightly. Things trying to make occult and satantic related things look harmless or "cute" is NOT good, and I wouldn't be surprised if these type of things are put into society to try and disarm people from how serious they can be. If you being a Christian walked around with a freebsd shirt with their devil logo on it how would that be ok? It's not. You may disagree with me but the way I see it the devil is despertly trying to draw souls towards him so they can suffer in Hell for all eternity, and misleading and disarming people is sadly a good way to do that, just like with Adam and Eve. All the near death videos i've seen of people of all ages who were sent to hell, they way they described it isn't funny, it's not "cute", it's not a game. It's absolutely horrifying and I wish all occult and satantic trash in society would be removed and people would take it more serious. We belong to God, we're The Lords flock, and we need to stay close to Him.

Well daemons provide computer services, the name was chosen for who knows what reasons, after it was chosen it was treated as a kind of acrostic for Disk And Execution MONitor. It's first uses were in the early 1960s by the programming group working on Unix. They explain it thus:
Many people equate the word "daemon" with the word "demon", implying some kind of satanic connection between UNIX and the underworld. This is an egregious misunderstanding. "Daemon" is actually a much older form of "demon"; daemons have no particular bias towards good or evil, but rather serve to help define a person's character or personality. The ancient Greeks' concept of a "personal daemon" was similar to the modern concept of a "guardian angel"—eudaemonia is the state of being helped or protected by a kindly spirit. As a rule, UNIX systems seem to be infested with both daemons and demons.

My objection is that you're ascribing a sinister aspect to the logo that isn't there. "Power to serve" is in no way creepy or satanic unless you ascribe that meaning to it. FreeBSD is a server operating system, and therefore gives you the "power to serve" when you run it on your machines. The little devil, while not necessary, is still a relevant logo due to the dual meanings of daemon.

You may disagree with me but the way I see it the devil is despertly trying to draw souls towards him so they can suffer in Hell for all eternity, and misleading and disarming people is sadly a good way to do that, just like with Adam and Eve. And I believe that people like you are the only thing giving these images any sort of power at all. When all is said and done, they're just pictures, not idols or objects of worship, which is what they would need to be for me to classify them as satanic.

Out of curiosity, would you allow your children to read/watch Harry Potter and Ghostbusters?
