Why Is Jesus Called 'The Word' in John 1:1?

I've never thought about this before. I believe it's because of Revelation 19, but does anyone know of any more references or information on why we know this is Jesus?

The scriptures say concerning Jesus, that all things are of Him, through Him and to Him. That all things were created by Him and apart or without Him was nothing created.
All of the The Bible leads to Him, speaks of Him and now waits for Him. All things have been put under His feet, all thrones, powers and authorities and it is all done through and by God's Word.
God's Word will never pass away even as His Son's reign will be an everlasting reign in an everlasting kingdom.

oh my ...
.. I am more then a little stunned by the low numbersof folk who callthemselves christian who have not come into a comprehension of this .
firstly as others have said .. ASK GOD to reveal John chapter one to you .. and HE WILL.
he delights in the fact that you ask.
some here have asnwerd excellently but wow how can so many not know ?!?
Jesus IS GOD . the word IS GOD -GOD IS THE WORD HE SPEAKS they are triune only in our limited attempt to describe the incomprehensible . but they are ONE.
"savedbygrace" is onto it and a few others . But in honesty no one can confess this except he speaks by the Holy Spirit and any one who does not or cannot confess this is Not speaking from the Holy spirit but a false lying Spirit .
start a fresh thread and ask away - but ASK GOD FIRST ... i did and he answered and wow i have never had such clarity in regard to these verses in john chptr 1, as when the lord Jesus revealed it to me .

Really Michael this is not really an issue.
I wouldn't disagree with anyone that calls Jesus The Word of God.
Where I differ is when we read John 1:1 where it says:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Many read this and lock onto "Word" and therefore see Jesus as "the spoken Word".
I simply believe the title "The Word" encompasses all that God is. John even goes into detail to give us that insight:
2 He was in the beginning with God.
The Word was pre-existent with God
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
The WORD is the Creator of all things.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
The WORD is life and light.
5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
The WORD enlightens us.
So already we have several things that "The Word" is...and this is why I point to the fact that the title given Jesus as "The Word" means much more that Jesus being "the spoken word". Not that it is improper to call Jesus The Word at all...but to realize in saying that...it means a lot more.
The only places Jesus is called "The Word" as a title is in John 1, Rev 19:13.

I wasn't saying it was an issue with you - just expressing amazement at the level of non-comprehension. (which is given by the Holy Spirit alone ) sorry if you misunderstood me there .
I find it intriguing how many folk try to ,shall we say dissect God in to parts .
i understand the word "el" one word for God ..is plural ..
but God is God and he is ONE
let me simplify .. i am speaking to you by written words on your screen .
when you reply to those words to whom are your replying ?
me or my words ... me of course - for my words did not speak themselves !
I spoke them - so they are me. this is because God made us in his image .
man speaks from the abundance of his heart ..why ? because God made us in HIS image in HIS likeness
So ,God speaks from then abundance of HIS heart ..and his word - the expressing forth of who he is.. became flesh
so when you reply to his word made flesh .. to whom are your replying ? to God
they are one!!
the word did not speak of itself .. God spoke it
this is why the lord Jesus said - "if you have seen me you have seen the father "
this is also why the lord Jesus said .. i do not speak of myself .

then we come to the question - id the word of God -being the Lord Jesus - is one with God.. how is it written that he as the son ( the only unique birthed forth son of God ) is at the end of all things to do with this world then made subject to the father ?
simple.. when i speak my words do not speak themselves - i speak them .they are an expression of myself .. but they do not of themselves speak .. they are subject to me who spoke them - but they are still me .
and thus it is with God who made us in his image .
his word is HIMself but the word spoken- is subject to the speaker.
this is why God said of the lord Jesus .. this is my beloved son ( that which was in me birthed forth) HEAR HIM... thats the same as saying .. LISTEN TO MY WORDS .
This is also why it is written that any one who does not recognize the lord Jesus does not recognize the father - for they are ONE .And if you do not obey the lord Jesus - you are not obeying God .
i suspect you know all this ,but i post it that others may know it also .

and isn't it so wonderful to know the heart attitude of the Most high God toward us .. that from the moment of the fall God spoke from the abundance of his heart .. and what did he say ?
in essence he said "SAVE THEM" salvation - Yeshua one who saves (in english JESUS)and his word BECAME FLESH
wow .. i mean WOW!!! praise God for Lord you are good and mighty and your word never fails .
this is also why David is saved ..for he said in thy WORD oh lord do i put my trust- that same word of the same most HIGH and one true LIVING GOD - the same word that he looked forward to we look back upon who became flesh and laid down his life so that whoso ever believes in him ( the word of God ) shall not perish but have everlasting LIFE
