My experience was the first time, when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, that the words just flowed from my mouth as I was praying, really without any kind of foreknowledge.... Now when I pray in tongues there will be times when specific words will come to mind to pray, and at others I just begin praying and as I get more in tune with the Lord my prayer tongue comes out and I begin praying in tongues that way....

What do you mean specific words come to your mind? Is it WORDS that you don't know? or WORDS you do know??

When you pray in tongues, do you think of something?? Or like this,

You think of something you understand. You pray in your mind of something but the WORDS that comes out to your mouth are language that you do not understand??

Hello Guys, just want to hear your experiences, opinions..

How do you PRAY in TONGUES?

- Do you think of something, then let the WORDS came out in your mouth?
or - Do you just let the WORDS out??

Or tell me. What else?

Its a GIFT from God to Some , not all. In fact, few in the genuine sense . If God wants you to have this gift, you wont have to prime-the-pump to get it --- you will have it as easy as it is for you to speak English and it will come upon you suddenly and naturally.

Here is a treatise done on Tongues by Someone who diligently investigated this Gift ; these are things you should be aware of :

"Tounges means foreign language- look up the word for this gift in any language the Bible has been written in and look up that definition. you will find answers of "(foreign) language or dialect". Example is the original ancient Greek (glossolalia) which is 'to speak languages'. when someone down the road is said to speak a tounge, you know they speak a language or dialect unfamiliar to you.
So this means the churches who teach that tongues is also sounds of holy joy from the spirit such as chittering, laughing, crying, moaning, mooing, clucking or barking are incorrect.
tongues is plural- every reference to the gift in scripture is plural with only the exception of a specific person speaking a specific language. It is the ability to speak and/or understand foriegn languages.
So this means the churches who teach that tounges is a single language from heaven between God, angels and you, if you have the spirit, are incorrect.
there is only one kind of tounges gift- I never found any scriptural support for a tounges that was only for prayer and another that was for the congregation/public. All information from scripture points to the one ability of speaking foreign languages you previously didn't know.
So this means the churches who teach that there are different forms of tounges are incorrect.
tongues must be understood by all people around you and done in orderly fashion- this is something that Paul tried to pound into the heads of the Corinthian congregation. Everyone, including the speaker, must understand what was said either by already knowing that language or by a translator. Otherwise it was a waste of time and cannot be proven to be a genuine gift.
So this means the churches who practice mosh pit-like tongues extravaganzas or who never have an interpreted tongue message are in error.
tongues was for a sign to unbelievers and for edification of the church body- direct quotes from The Apostle Paul. Anyone who didnt believe Jesus was the real deal and that the church now belongs to ALL who believe would be proven wrong by the confirmation of this gift and that would in turn strengthen the church as a whole and add to it's ranks.
So this means the churches who teach that tongues is for a deeper personal connection to God is incorrect.
tongues may have passed away long ago-there are many compelling reasons to believe this to be true and i have acctually confirmed it for the gift of prophecy simply due to the biblical definition of a prophet. I personally haven't yet put a headstone on tongues, but i do say that if the genuine gift does still exist, it must be incredibly rare. I haven't experienced or heard of any credible accounts of the true gift being used combined that with the purpose and usefulness of such a gift is all but gone.
So this brings into question any church that teaches this gift is attainable, let alone mandatory for the church body.
When I did this study it was acctually hard to find a tongues supporter that was willing to talk about it. The one pastor I did find to talk to me gave his ideas of what it was all about and a few scriptures.. a couple of which had nothing to do with spiritual gifts or tongues. Even the Assembly of God main website stated that some of its core doctrine was not found in scripture, but was based on "assumptions and deductions from an apparent pattern found in the book of acts". it's like alot of people belived in it and had stories of experiences to tell me, but they couldnt tell me why or explain anything with any real satisfaction"

I'm thanking GOD with my ENGLISH language
then SUDDENLY, I speak in a LANGUAGE I Do not
know..

My mind is thanking GOD in ENGLISH Language
BUT my WORDS is thanking GOD in a language
I do not know...

It is just Around 10 seconds
And I STOPPED.

because I was so Surprised

Romans 8:26
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

this verse(Rom 8:26) happened to me. My prayer suddenly became so fast and the words came out.

1 Corinthians 14:2
2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

I know of very few people who speak in tongues as it is revealed in scripture.

At the church we first attended when we lived on the Sunshine Coast, a couple
there experienced speaking in tongues, turns out they were speaking a dialect
of the Czech language...a man visiting the church was astounded because it
was his native language and he'd not heard it since leaving the county as a young man.

My husband spoke in tongues when he severely crushed his leg at work, it was the first time
he'd ever spoke in tongues and the presence of the Holy Spirit in his hospital room
was strong.
That's when I felt that everything would be alright and though he was
in life and death struggle at the time, he would live.

My husband's faith walk has increased two-fold and he even did some witnessing
while he was in the hospital recovering from having his left leg amputated.
We have a lot of on-going medical issues (especially my husband) but he has
a wonderful outlook and not once has he cursed God.
We are nearly 3 yrs. into this new area of life and are handling all
the ups and downs with the Lord's help.
God has done amazing things for us -- we are provided for spiritually, emotionally
and financially.

I would encourage you to rely on the Lord (submit) and be willing to be a "vessel"
He can use.

Hi. In Romans 8:26 note that its THE SPIRIT of God that is groaning as he intercedes for us, and not us . In 1 Cor. 14:2 , we are told (elsewhere in 1 Cor. 12 and 14) it is supposed to be followed up with an Interpretation either from a seperate individual and if not, then the person giving the tongue message is supposed TO KNOW how it accurately translates out in english.

The Tongue is supposed to be an ACTUAL world language , different than your normal language --- it is supposed to be a definitive language that exists and is spoken in some part of the world where if that Person were present with you, he would be totally amazed at hearing his own native tongue being spoken by someone else . Further, it should be spoken on and on just like you can in english when you talk ... and not only for 10 seconds or so.

We need to be very careful that it is a genuine gift from God , and not just utterances in a moment of elation or because we want to talk to God using non-english resemblence of words mixed together.

Lastly, we should never be made to feel we need to talk in Tongues in order to be accepted by Others or a Church in general , because many other people are doing it. And im afraid such is the case with modern Christianity today because No One wants to feel they are 'a Have-Not' .

Finally, it is a genuine gift...just not as common as many think it is because Satan has fooled so many with a counterfiet version as he is so good at doing. Regards.

How do you PRAY in TONGUES?

you can ask for the gift if you have the Holy Spirit

- Do you think of something, then let the WORDS came out in your mouth?
or - Do you just let the WORDS out??

You don;t force it. Ask the Lord to give you the gift, and watch His power when you believe.

Or tell me. What else?

Give your life to Christ, allow Him live in you and you live in Him, Ask the Father for gifts, and believe, He will give you the gifts you desire.

Wow!!! What a nice couple :) I believe that the BEST COUPLES in the WORLD is that Christ is the CENTER of their lives... :) Keep on growing your FAITH :) Thank you so much for your reply :)

And yeah. I rely to the LORD anytime, everytime. I'm willing so much.. I'am nothing on my own. Without the PRESENCE of GOD, his GUIDANCE I'am nothing.. I'm willing to be a "vessel", I ask GOD when I pray almost everytime to use me in every possible way... :)

Yeah the SPIRIT intercedes for me partially. I consult my PROFESSOR regarding on this.. My PROFESSOR said that the HOLY SPIRIT partially intercedes for me. My Professor's experience was different from mine. He's experience was the greatest, I think he said, ROM(8:26) He experienced this three times?? The first time was he's tongue begin to move so fast that he cannot even control. Then he's mouth is speaking in language he doesn't know.. The second time was when he was praying, the HOLY SPIRIT intercedes for him. CRYING for him, praying for him. He said that he's just watching the spirit intercedes for him. I think the 3rd time was the same.. this experience was great. I believe I will experience this in God's time.

Rom(8:26) Happened 10 seconds. I'm talking about GOD's Spirit enabled me to speak in tongues.. My mind is thanking him so much in english but I was so surprised the WORDS that came out in my mind is not ENGLISH.. Then now, I can speak in tongues, pray in tongues whenever I want to. I just allow the HOLY SPIRIT ....

We need to be very careful that it is a genuine gift from God , and not just utterances in a moment of elation or because we want to talk to God using non-english resemblence of words mixed together.

What do you mean?? Sorry I'm a bit bad in understanding ENGLISH...

I don't want to be a show-off because I have this gift.

Give your life to Christ, allow Him live in you and you live in Him, Ask the Father for gifts, and believe, He will give you the gifts you desire.

I give my life. I allow him, and he now lives in me because I' am a new creation.. (2Cor5:17) I already ask him, and believe instantly that received the GIFT of TONGUES then when I just want to thank him in my own words. I began to speak in tongues....

See, this is probably me being ignorant, but why is speaking in tongues such a big deal anyway? If you speak in tongues then you speak in tongues, and if you aren't gifted that, then you aren't.

From my point of view, it's like prophesying. No one (I think) asks to be given a prophesy because they know God has certain things He will give to certain people, why is speaking in tongues different?

Nope it is not. Not everyone can prophesy. Everyone who is born of the Spirit, new creation CAN speak in tongues IF they ask the Father in faith, and they believe. It is the work of the Spirit which is Holy from the Father that does the work in Believers.

I want you to know there is tongues and there is tongues. There is the gift of tongues and interpretations which is solidly for edifying the church and building it up. This gift is equal to prophesy and it is not one that everyone has.

Tongues speaking in private and to God, every believer born again and of the Holy Spirit can do this.

Im not sure why when someone asks about tongues speaking, there are some who are quick to douse the question and just belittle the gift. Not everyone desires it, and some people do. If those who desire it want it, why should anyone hinder them or discourage them?

As long as they are asking the Father, who is the giver of all good gifts to His Children, what is the problem? The Lord said those who want it only need to desire it with all their heart, and ask Him, and when they ask they should believe, and when they believe they will get it.

I would focus on the Lord and His promises more than what the enemy can or cannot do. No need to put a lot of focus on the enemy when God says "If I be for you, who can be against you"

I think this is a rare gift and I find it odd that most christians claim to speak it as if its common. If you speak it by yourself then I was taught its not tounges because when you speak in tounges, someone will be able to translate it because you are suppose to be passing on a message of sorts.

Thats just my view on it and I am very skeptical of these things.

In the groups that received in Scripture, they all received.
1
---On the day of Pentecost in the upper room: Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance"
2- ---At Cornelius’ house filled with friends and family who were baptized. Acts 10:44 ”While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."
3- ---The Disciples of Ephesus Acts 19:2 "He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.” 6”And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve."

(
The group that doesn't say all received is on the day of Pentecost, not in the Upper Room, where there were mockers of tongues. Acts 2). But Yahweh isn't going to make anyone just like salvation.

I Cor. 12:28 states “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues,” These diversities have at least two main purposes -
(1) one purpose of speaking in tongues is for church edification that's speaking in tongues with an interpretation I Cor 12:10. So every believer isn't going to be given this gift; however,
(2) other purposes are a personal language between you and our Heavenly Father and is shown in such Scriptures such as Acts 10:46 "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. …”

We can trust Yahweh to give good gifts (James 1:17) and all tongues can be interpreted according to I Cor 14:13.

This is a great article I read about it and agree with since its a hot button issue among christians:

Speaking in tongues is the New Testament phenomena where a person speaks in a language that is unknown to him. This language is either the language of angels or other earthly languages (1 Cor. 13:1). It occurred in Acts 2 at Pentecost and also in the Corinthian church as is described in 1 Corinthians 14. This New Testament gift was given by the Holy Spirit to the Christian church and is for the purpose of the edification of the Body of Christ as well as for glorifying the Lord.

There seems to be three divisions in the use of tongues: First, a private prayer language that is not interpreted; second, a language that is interpreted -- this defines proper usage in the Christian congregation; and third, missionary context -- that is, it appears in the context of evangelism where people (in the New Testament) are presenting the gospel.

Today there is much debate as to the validity of speaking in tongues, especially since there is so much misuse of it in Christian circles. Nevertheless, some Christian churches teach that all the charismatic gifts (speaking in tongues, word of knowledge, prophecy, etc.) have ceased with the completion of the New Testament (1 Cor. 13:8-12).

Others maintain that the charismatic gifts are still for the church today (1 Cor. 1:7). It is not the purpose of this paper to take sides on this issue since it is so divisive and believing or not believing in them does not affect one's salvation. Nevertheless, there are good arguments on both sides and the Christian church needs to be as gracious as possible to those with opposing views on this debatable issue.

But there is an important point worth making here. Some churches erringly maintain that you must speak in tongues in order to be saved. This is a grave mistake since not all people speak in tongues because not all people are gifted by the Holy Spirit this way.
1 Cor. 12:7-11,28-31, "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills...28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps,
administrations, various kinds of tongues. 29

All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? 30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? 31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
So, the gifts of the Spirit are varied and they are for the edification of the body of Christ. Speaking in tongues is not necessary for salvation and it is not a prerequisite proof of Baptism in the Holy Spirit. We must remember the words of Paul in 1 Cor. 13:1-2,13 ~
"If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing....13 But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

How do you PRAY in TONGUES?

- Do you think of something, then let the WORDS came out in your mouth?
or - Do you just let the WORDS out??
I desire to draw on God, to "tune in".
I don't think of anything, praying in unknown tongues is to get beyond my little thoughts, into the love, joy and peace that passes understanding.

If you really want to understand / appreciate, you will need to receive God's Spirit.

You ask God to give you that gift and you wait and trust and faithfully serve him untill it happens and you keep your eyes set on him, not the speaking in the tongues.

It is a gift received, it is not a skill or a method... pray and wait.

Read for 1 cor 14 word for word for yourself... word for word... don't get caught in the rampant confusion over this issue that is running amuck in the church today.

Sorry but I think you didn't read this verse..

1 Corinthians 14:2

2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Tongues are not just only foreign languages.. How can be it foreign while people doesn't understand? Bro, if it is just foreign language it will be understood..

This is how I received the gift of tongues. I don't like to speak about it anymore to people, but I hope this helps you somehow with your faith walk with God.

I was at a retreat when I received this gift. The pastor told us to pray for the Holy Spirit to come. At that time, I was battling depression, and I was yearning for God to come honestly into my life. I knew that something wasn't right in my heart and my life. I wanted change and I wanted to feel new and transformed like God had intended.

And so, I got down on my knees and prayed. I prayed loudly. I don't remember exactly the details of my confessions, but I prayed about my sins and my emotional scars to heal. I kept telling Jesus that I really wanted to meet Him tonight, even though I didn't know what that meant to me exactly. But I desperately wanted Him to change me. At that moment, I felt the presence of Jesus walking around among us. I kept praying and praying and praying... I don't know how many hours passed, but all of the sudden, I began to pray in this different language that was totally different from my English one. I thought, "Oh Lord, is this from you? Could it be from you? If it's not, then please make me cease it!" But I kept praying in this different language, and I also felt this very cool, refreshing presence placed in me. I kept praying and praying quietly in this odd language that I've never heard of before in my life because in the Bible, it said that whoever prays in tongue should pray quietly, or something like that as I remember. Another pastor who was just passing by stopped me. He seemed amazed and joyed at what I was doing, and he told me to keep praying this way. Of course, at that time, I had no 'control' over this, but I did. He told me to pray in this language loudly, and I did.

I lifted my hands up high and prayed. I kept praying, and this language poured out of me so beautifully. It was the most beautiful sounding language I've ever heard. I had my eyes closed - of course- as I prayed, and the room was dark, but it felt like there was light everywhere.

After the retreat, I just kept praying in this language. And I've asked God so many times to take it away from me if it's not from Him. But even now, I can still pray in this language when I ask for the Holy Spirit to be reside in me.
