3 things:

(Disclaimer: I have advanced training in marketing so I have a perspective on this that might be considered a little, well, "off")

1) I don't find the commercial offense (and neither did a lot of people commenting after the article). In fact it did a good job of going what it was supposed to do: get attention and appeal to it's audience.

2) The 1950's and 1960's were 50 and 60 YEARS ago. Get over it old people (of which I am one) the world has up and changed on you. You're starting to sound like who you are: old farts who people just smile and nod about when you talk about the "old days".

Put this in perspective: in the '50's and '60's if you wanted to compare the social norms to 50 and 60 years past you'd be talking about the social norm's of the 1890's and the 1900's. The was, like, before WWI.

Seriously, anyone under the age to 60 didn't care then and doesn't care now.

Its was 2 generations ago.

Geez.

Have I made my point ?

3) The fact that this is a commercial for hard liquor seems to be an implied issue for both the author and some of the commentators. It is also implied (and down right stated by a couple commentators) that this is somehow a reflection of and caused by the permissive society brought about by the 1960's (60 years and 2 generations ago - see point 2)

Here's the issue: Hard liquor was not advertised on TV until CONSERVATIVE, Reagan type Republicans decided the liquor distillers had free speech rights and change the rules. (Look this one up the rules were changed by the Reagan administration in his first term). So this wasn't a problem brought about by hippie dippy types but by button down corporate types of the 1980's.

Who, btw and apropos of nothing also brought us the cocaine revolution, but that's a different story. (Old joke from about 1984: Cocaine addiction is God's way to telling you make too much money)

I don't see the problem with the commercial, except that it over exaggerated the 50's a little.

However, from a marketing perspective, it was good.

In fact, they probably should ad men to the ad, being the product would be attractive to more of the population.

Not all men are beer drinkers.

Unfortunately the add is for something called "skinny girls" cocktails but as a marketing type, I could see some possibilities.....

Um...

...are you trying to mimic a homosexual lisp there ?

I don't know if that's offensive or just cute.

I'm sure in a general sense 50/60's had more class, the music at least was neat. But you have to remember racism was very high during that time, segregation and all that, also those born out of wedlock could be disowned by their family or shunned by the community. Not to mention they had no child abuse laws afaik, so kids could get beat constantly and parents immune from the law. Heck when one of my favorite books was written "a child called it" his mom did absolutely horrific things to the author, he was the second most abused child in california at the time, the first may of died, but she got off scot free I think because there were no laws to protect against it at the time. This was in the 60's/70's maybe.

I think you meant to say corporal punishment laws.

Not to mention.

and people don't talk about this, greatest generation and all

But domestic abuse was practically a spectator sport.

(World War II and Korea, both really horrible, nasty wars, had a PTSD effect on an entire generation of soldiers who, later, became husbands)

I'll have you know, sir, that I consider any man who does not wear a frock-coat out to be no gentleman, to say nothing of those scoundrels who consider a morning-coat formal.

Perhaps America was atypical in this, but in the UK at least, the period spanning the 18th-to-early-20th century were marked by a generally shocking intake of alcohol, by today's standards.

Know your audience - it takes an awful lot of alcohol to shock Charlie or I.

...heck, it takes quite a bit just to make our lips tingle.

Same was true of the U.S.; having gone through a civil war, having the "new wave" of immigrants enter Ellis Island, just the overall poverty in most cities.

Heck, my lips are tingling right now and it's.....3:15 where I am.

So it's not only not shocking, it's early in the day too.

I have migraine medicine that makes my lips tingle. Not quite as fun.

Back in the day....

...when the bi-polar disorder was still being brought under control...

... I used to take trilafon before going to bed. (actually any time you take trilifon is just before going to bed)

Now THAT was a tingle.

oh, yeah.
