I can't believe they let those parties actually exist. Jesus called us to love our enemies and we should do. He also called us to love our neighbor as ourselves. I'm not from Greece and I don't know what kind of power are those quasi-nazi people in but Greece should make that party illegal. Too much for some to handle, I know, but it's obvious what those guys want: use the situation, get in power and then God knows what.

From your mouth to God's ear... But I truly believe that this present economic situation bring people to their edge and they look for extremist expressions of their situation. That is the result of a "hopelessness" among the young people who see that they are not in control of their future and their job situation. They think that this party maybe an answer to their problems whistle it is just a dangerous ploy and a dead end that could bring a country to disaster :( :sorry::o

So your solution is to abandon democracy?

eudaimonia,

Mark

No, my solution is democracy. Greece can choose whomever they want to, it doesn't effect me at all but voting for those guys is obviously a bad idea. Their main agenda seems to be empowered by their frustration instead of justice.

Didn't you write that the party should be made illegal? That's not the same thing as the voters refusing to cast votes for the party.

By what standards should a party be made illegal? Wouldn't such a power be abused? There could be radical parties that are little like extreme nationalists that the major parties would find it convenient to simply make illegal.

Party should be illegal if they are, as you said, extreme nationalists. Democracy is more than letting people do and promote what they want to. Greece needs an organized government around which people are able to come to the common, or at least to a majority conclusion in politics, economics and trade. Personally I've got nothing against those quasi-nationalists and the reason I called them that is because I haven't heard of any violence encouraged by them.

I am quite sure that that sort of party would be absolutely illegal here. The last thing people, at least in my opinion, need in a situation of economic ruin is someone to come by and create confusion.

Results matter in politics, not promises or frustrations. I've seen the video and nowhere does that guy refer to his plan of improving the government. All he talks about is how they need to get rid of junta.

I agree here too that they operate on the "frustration" of a rotten political system with only hope they will be elected ...and then? What would they do? God only knows... Nope we do not need such movements...Europe is full of this movement though and true that it will threaten our democratic roots. Democracy is NOT based on letting anarchy reign Not in civilized nations like Greece. :sorry:

Basically all of this can be boiled down to:
"Parties that I don't agree with should be banned, simply because I don't agree with them."

From what I've heard about Golden Dawn I don't agree with them either (to put it mildly!), but democracy is EXACTLY about allowing people to voice their opinions, even unpopular or simplistic ones, like the ones seen on the extreme left and right (funny how you only mentioned one of the types of extremists, but not the other?).

I'm no fan of democracy, but I like hypocricy even less.

Why? The Communist Party is allowed to exist. At least Golden Dawn doesn't have the blood of 100 million people on its hands. Or perhaps the Greeks should continue to support establishment parties that will ram ever more severe austerity measures through just to prop up Brussels' single currency experiment?

Is that a uniquely European habit? How often does America have wars?

I'm not asking you to take my word. I have shown you the Golden Dawn's party symbol, which is clearly (be honest) a self-conscious imitation of the Nazi flag.

The meander is an ancient greek symbol that is fitting for Greek nationalist party. Really, if your only case against the party is based on the party's flag having a superficial resemblance to that of National Socialist Germany, you're really grasping at straws.

It's just a coincidence that the flag they chose looks fascist (red, white and black with a symbol that looks conspicuously like a swastika) and that they make use of the nazi salute... I mean the "roman salute" wink wink. The first edition of their magazine Chrysi Avgi just happened to have a swastika on the cover too.

The communist party is not fascist... My opinion of course since in the USA it is clearly the boogey man... Cyprus has communism I did not see anything 'extreme' hapenning to them...Fascism is NOT equal to communism :doh:You cannot compare the two by far modern time communism is a type of socialism;)Nah...Brussels will "ran" their experiment even if Greece goes to Drahma...just one victim down no big losses...

:thumbsup:I think USA would win in that race ;)

Maybe but the colors have NOTHING to do with Greece :sorry: Furthermore what on earth's name would you want to resemble a fascist symbol...Sorry it is unacceptable...

The flags of Yemen and Trinidad are red, white and black. I suppose the Cuban government must be pro-American because its flag is red, white and blue. I don't know what to tell you if you can't tell the difference between a meander and a swastika, I can tell them apart quite easily.

Why am I even arguing over something as trivial as this? :sigh:

A form of the Roman salute was one used in the United States as part of the Pledge of Allegiance...

In Greece, it was used by the Mexatas government, which fought for the Allies.

Cyprus has communism? No country has ever claimed to have communism. You're suggesting that because of a government in Cyprus in which the Communists are one of many parties represented we should ignore the Soviet Union (which both the Greek and Cypriot Communist parties actively supported) and China?

Philotheti said:

Since Mussolini was not responsible for nearly as much bloodshed and suffering as Stalin or Mao, I'm inclined to agree. What this has to do with Golden Dawn is not clear.

You cannot compare the two by far modern time communism is a type of socialism;)

What did the second "S" in "USSR" stand for?

So whats up with their use of the actual swastika? Seems to be going well beyond the realm of coincidence especially when they openly call themselves nationalists. Calling for immigrants to be sent to work camps is a dead give away as well. Denying the extent of the holocaust and calling Hitler a great person seems a little suspicious as well. I can post a link to the actual footage when I get enough posts. Dudes crazy. He was talking about putting landmines along the borders of Greece.

I can tell them apart too... but mistakes like that don't happen.

The Nazi flag is very well known and notorious, and no flag creator would create a flag that resembled a Nazi flag as closely as this one does without conscious intent and approval.
