That's USD $10.50/gallon
Actually today it would be US $8.73/US GAL with current exchange rate.
Still a great deal more than is paid in the USA.

That said, most of the price of a gallon of gasoline in the USA is tax, either federal or state tax. Very little of the pump price in the US is the cost of the crude, refining costs, and transportation costs.

I would venture a guess that this is also true of Europe and most of the civilized world.

Yes, but those taxes go to improving and keeping up the infrastructure. In America, we want nice things but aren't willing to pay for it.

Moreover, people should not be forced to take jobs closer that pay less simply because they cannot afford to drive further. (Next door neighbors.)

At the same time, people shouldn't be forced to "drive until they qualify" and live in a home that's an hour away from work just because that's the cheapest they can get.

People should not have to take public transportation, which in my area does not have the greatest safety rating, just because the government is getting greedy with the gas tax.

No one is saying you have to take it. But transit does need to be improved to the extent that it is a viable alternative to the car. No one should be forced to drive a car.

Finally, if this truly is the land of the free, people should not HAVE to change their entire lifestyle because of GAS PRICES... I mean, seriously- That doesn't strike you as being a pitiful excuse?

It's cheap gas that changed people's lifestyles in the 1950s. Suburbia is based on the premise of cheap oil, and no matter what the government does, lifestyles are going to change, because gases prices will continue to go up.

The reason that mass transit works, in, for example Germany, is because those people are all crammed into an area like the size of Montana.

Yep. Density sure can be efficient. Another thing we're not very good at.

In my experience, large cities are not very good places to live. There's one or two cities that I could consider living in, but they are both less than 10,000 people.
