I first heard about this by reading how approximately 50% of Greek policemen voted for a Neo Nazi party called Golden Dawn.
This seemed quite shocking, so I had to look into what Golden Dawn is.
I wasn't too surprised to find out that the "Neo Nazi" label is what their critics put on them and not one that they put on themselves.
Apparently, their hero is Ioannis Metaxas, who lead Greece into World War 2, against the Axis Powers. Even the OP article says more than once that Golden Dawn is not anti Jewish.
They are nationalists, and I don't agree very much with nationalists, but don't feel it's right to call every right wing or nationalist group "Nazis".

That is the true danger right now :( Most youth are so sick and tired of all politicians that could be going to the extreme right :( No! Golden Dawn is a fascist group actually :( But God will protect Greece from this extreme group and hopefully the y will form a coalition government...

Golden Dawn is an extremely nationalistic group (this they admit to), so whether it is Nazi or Fascist or whatever subdivision of nationalism, it is dangerous, and it is apparently attempting to catch the same hate and fear vibes that the Nazis used to gain power.

Even their flag is pretty obviously created with the full knowledge that it is reminiscent of the Nazi flag. Yes, they can always deny that, but accidents like this don't happen. Anyone who wanted to distance themselves from Nazis would make it look far more obviously different. You can tell what their ambitions are.

I hope you are right for Greece's sake, but God didn't protect Germany. Let me recommend the advice: "God helps those who help themselves."

Shall we always blame the Greeks for this? I agree with you that it is a dangerous situation but youth has been 'pushed" to that corner....Germany should face up their responsibilities... And their allowing this fascism to raise....For this "movement" clearly has started from Germany and England and spread southbound....:sorry::sorry::sorry:

I didn't say that. I'm sure that there are many Greeks who are trying to do something about the situation. However, they shouldn't count on God to miraculously help them. They need to act wisely and with vigor.

Shall we always blame the Greeks for this?

Who is "we"? And when did I say that?

How long is it before Europeans get back to their old habits?

Which old habits do you mean?

eudaimonia,

Mark
:sorry: That was a bit of a generalizing statement my friend ;)... For one thing Greece fought Hitler...so Please do not include us in that game

Germany should never have been "united" that is what the problem is right now...A strong Germany could create a problem... as well as a French-Germany alliance. These two ARE NOT what Europe is though... :sorry:

It's ironic that someone so Greek should quote from the Roman conqueror Caesar speaking in Latin - veni vidi vici. When Greece was incorporated into the Roman Empire they were not so happy about dictators with such words on their lips.

He is not a Nazi cause he is not anti-Semitic and he is right the media is biased. Apart from that I think he is a bit of a nutcase and it is worrying he is so popular.

I like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn better. This golden dawn is silly crank right wingers who like to play dictator. The type of folks who practice nazi salutes in front of a mirror and imagine they are on a balcony looking over marching storm troopers. Kind of like Cartman from south park.

That group should be illegal to exist! He hangs over our heads like the bogey-man... We just do not take him seriously but honesty he has senators who would be included in our parliament :( Sad news for Greece as for any other European nation. And no I do not buy the argument he is just a "silly crank" he can become a bigger problem for the years to come :(

Well you might want to start taking them seriously, apparently they've got enough pull to get elected.
I agree with you :( I have been greatly disturbed by this as well all of us sane Greeks who see this and we feel like puking:sick:....:mad::mad::sigh::sigh::(

Swedes usually think that anything even remotely patriotic is "right-wing extremist" and "nationalist"; their politicians and media have done a good job brainwashing them. I don't know anything about Golden Dawn, so I can't say if they really ARE dangerous, and neo-Nazi, or not. But I'm going to need more than the word of a Swede in order to make that judgement.

But I'm going to need more than the word of a Swede in order to make that judgement.

I'm an American. I only live in Sweden, and I don't watch Swedish news. Does that help? Or do your blanket judgments extend to more than just Swedes?

I'm not asking you to take my word. I have shown you the Golden Dawn's party symbol, which is clearly (be honest) a self-conscious imitation of the Nazi flag. Read the well-referenced Wikipedia article on the Golden Dawn all the way through.

And try reading this article, and especially watching the video in the article:

‘Golden Dawn’ Greek Party Leader Warns Greece’s ‘Traitors’ as He Calls for Revolution after Projected Success in Parliamentary Vote | TheBlaze.com

A quote from the article: "But Michaloliakos has rejected the neo-Nazi label widely used for his party, stressing that it is staunchly nationalist".

Is that mere patriotism? Be honest.

Mark
