Personally, I'm using BOINC to search for prime numbers and details of protein-ligand interaction.
I think this is a perfect program for when I spend time on the forums and surfing the web, some older computers might experience some performance loss but if you have a computer that you can run recent games on (2005->) you shouldn't have any trouble, except perhaps at startup.
I just thought I would inform you it's a simple way to make a difference.
(If someone wants to add anything, please do, the introduction can be far longer).
