How can you call a place the middle of nowhere when it has the distinction of having its very own Opera House?

There seem to be a lot of places in IL with Opera Houses. Strangely enough, many of them are in the middle of no where. (Ex: Sesser, Palestine, Beardstown... All in the middle of no where)

Don't forget Viola. It too has (or had) an opera house. But it wasn't the middle of no where; it was "The Crossroads of Mercer County". Hmmm..... I guess that really is the same thing.

So far south in Illinois that I have to head north to go to Louisville.

I've been down that way, from "Normal".........
Seems to me that our "Almost Normal" motorcycle group has headed down to some crossroad in southeastern IL for a hamburger festival or some such thing. It is supposed to be THE place to go for one in SE IL.

They say it is not even on the GPS properly.......out in the middle of nowhere.

That sounds like Annapolis. It's a town up in the boonies somewhere between Robinson and Marshall. It was never incorporated and now doesnt' even exist on the maps. I've never been there. But when we lived in Lawrenceville, I remember that my church ladies use to talk about it all the time and one day my wife disappeared for about 3 hours in order to have lunch with them at this mysterious hamburger stand. They open at 11:00 AM and close at 2:00 or whenever they run out of hamburger, that later usually coming first.

Hate to tell you, but though I used to, I would no longer consider that southern Illinois. I'm well over an hour south of there. And it's still another 2 hours south to Cairo and Metropolis. Egypt is a good size country, and "Little Egypt" isn't so small either. But it doesn't go as far north as what you're talking about.

Amen to that. I see many people really refer to S. Illinois stopping no more north than where I am from (Mt. Vernon).

Well, Effingham is (in my book anyway) definitely central Illinois. Mount Vernon I would put in southern Illinois. Mind you I think that Robinson is also in southern Illinois, but just barely. Once one is north of I-70, you're not in southern Illinois anymore. And that even works as it angles across the state. Towns like Edwardsville that are north of I-70 but south of towns like Casey or Marshall, which are south of I-70, have less southern Illinois characteristics and more metro-East traits.

So, do you take I-39 north to Hudson or head north out Veterans Parkway to get to Lake Bloomington?
Yep, sounds right. Driven a few times out toward hudson when I was taking the long route home from school on the country road doing 55-60. :D

Hi Y'all,

I was born in Dearborn, MI. I had a great time going to IL. We went to Peoria, Neoga and Pekin. Such good kind-hearted people you'd ever want to me. The memories I have from there I will always cherish and remembering helps carry me through some rough times.

I know it seems highly improbable, but I have been visited by 3 angels, had a number of visions, and more. The first angel that spoke to me said in a booming voice loudly, "Fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of His judgment is come upon all of the earth, and worship Him Who made the heaven and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." Now this IS my TESTIMONY of what I have SEEN and HEARD. I SHARE it with YOU. Alot more has happened to me but I cannot retype it to everyone so if you are interested, you can go to my site at jesusreturningverysoon.com
My main message is that Jesus is coming for us very soon. I hope you'll take the initiative.

May God Bless Your Hearts and Souls, and Minds,

Michael W. Cadry
