Hi, my family and I have not been to church in several years. Mainly its because of my dad, he had a hard job where he was working most of the week out of town and mom and i would visit him on the weekends and spend time together on saturday and sunday. Sometimes he had to work on sunday. My dad does not want to go back to church. He is a Christian and trusts in Chist but has lost faith in preachers and thinks mny of them are in it for the money. He thinks many right-wing republican preachers are mean, hateful, nutty, prejudiced, extreme, and unChristian, they go against what Jesus says in the Bible, are just like the phariesees that murdered Jesus. He has lost faith in the people who claim to serve God. He hates modern worship styles, modern music, rap or rock, anything 'cool' flashy preachers annoy him. He is also has strict morals.

I would like to go back to church, but what kind of church? I don't know about a baptist one. They give us a hard time for being democrats. I don't like liberal new age churches that do not mention Jesus Christ or the need for repentance.

It sounds like you tend to be conservative theologically but liberal politically. I would suggest Reformed Churches.

These Would include:
Presbyterian Church American (PCA)
Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP)
Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC)
United Reformed Church (URC)
Association of Reformed Baptist Churches of America (ARBCA)

I think Confessional Lutherans also tend to leave political affiliation to Christian Liberty as well. However Im not sure maybe one of the Lutherans around here can clarify that. My first hand experience with Lutherans is limited.

Reformed Churches tend to be serious about not associating themselves with political parties. Politics are never mentioned in the pulpit nor political parties or candidates endorsed. I attend a PCA congregation and as members we have card carrying republicans and card carrying Democrats.

But most political liberals WANT their churches to take stands on social and political matters, don't you think? Of the Reformed churches, I'd think only the RCA would come close to being satisfying to such a person.

While most Baptist conventions are conservative or are populated by people who are political conservatives, that's not true of all. The American Baptist Churches of the USA are ecumenical and tend towards the liberal side of things. The United Church of Christ, i.e. the Congregationalists, are very definetly socially and politically liberal and are somewhat like the Baptists in style.

Hello dragon. A true believer in Christ is already in the Church, so if that is you, then there is no where to go; however, one ought to meet with saints of God in collective worship and Bible studies in a scriptural assembly. I have sent you a personal message about some possibilities. Look up always and trust the Lord. He never fails!

I think you should pray on it, and then go looking around. Maybe talk to people who attend different churches. You may find something you like that you didn't expect. But you'll never know unless you try.

If you do find the right place, it can do an enormous amount of good for you spiritually. And don't overplay the political thing. There may be political applications to their beliefs, but good churches put the Gospel first, and will give members room to work out their own salvation.

Your dad is a man after my own heart. Except I like modern music.

I hope you thought of one to visit today, Easter morning, unless you are tied up in family activities.

Beyond the more familiar denominations above, your or your dad might like something like Quaker or Mennonite, where money might not be involved in the service and less paid staff is in place. Some churches have dropboxes in the back for offerings, instead of the ceremony of collecting during the service.

Both organizations have less overhead. Simpler meeting spaces, less staff, less expectation for A/V delivery in the service. The members do a lot of leading. They are less likely to woo newcomers with music, guest speakers, and greeting courtesies. Less flash, more focus on charity.

Apapedragon, I won't try to tell you what Church to attend but I will suggest that you consider finding a Church you can be comfortable in. I'm sure your Dad believes the Bible and it says we shouldn't forsake the gathering of ourselves together. Of course your dad is right about some Chuches and some Preachers, that's just the way the world is. You may not need the fellowship of other Christians right now but what about other Christians that could really use your fellowship right now. God has given you and your family a gift, you should use it You will never be happier than when you are serving God, uplifting others, doing whatever it is you do best in the Lord. I would love to hear what you decide and how it works out for you. I feel sure there is a place where you can refuel and be strengthened for the comming week. It's hard to start back after being away for a while but you have to sort of push yourself to get started and I think you will be glad you did. One other thing I hope you can understand, the Pharaisees didn't murder Jesus, Jesus laid down His life because it pleased His Father, no man had the power to take the Saviors life. God used the Pharisees as a tool to accomplish His will. Jesus gave Himself as a sin offering for us. God bless you and your family.
