I spent today thinking about gods love, his guidance, his spirit, and where he was trying to bring me in this life. This line of thinking eventually led me out of the house on this beautiful spring day we were having. I walked with my two little pygmy goats (possibly the sweetest little pets you can have :3 ) I picked wild flowers, I enjoyed the beauty of nature and this evening when I came into the house and picked up my bible my eyes instantly went to this scripture:

"Be not afraid, little flock, for the father has chosen gladly to give you his kingdom. Sell all your possession and give to charity; make your self money belts that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also."

Soooooo, what exactly was Jesus saying here???

It means to be so sold out to Him that we give to others willingly whatever He asks. It's beyond our tithes. It means that no material possession is so treasured by us that we can't give it up if He requests it. We can love all kinds of things and people more than Yahweh. This verse is saying that we need to love Yahweh and have no other gods in our hearts.

I find it amazing that for the past couple of months, I've felt the Holy Spirit withdraw me away from loving all my dvds, Blurays that I have ( I have many!) In secret I wanted to sell them, I had no desire for them the only ones I wanted to keep where, Visual Bible - Gospel of John, ACTS and the Ten Commandments.

Then God had fulfilled his promise to me after 13 years since I left my church, he found me a new one 5 Sundays ago! Cutting the story short of how God lead me to this wonderful Church, then out of the blue, I knew exactly what God wanted me to do, to now sell all that I have and give to the poor.

I sold as many movies for as little as £3 each including blue-ray movies and box sets at work. I gave all the money that I made to the church but I didn't tell them what I done. I wanted to keep this all a secret :)

Although I didn't sell every movie I stayed obedient to what God asked me to do regardless if I sold 1 or 100 films. I even gave all the Harry Potter movies on blue-ray to a girl who works at the SPA next to my work that I go and see regularly for my back treatments.

She loves Harry Potter so I said you can have all 7 movies on blue-ray and I gave what she offered me to the Church. For the past couple of months I wanted to get rid of my blue-ray player but no one wanted it. I kept it and kept it until I could give it away. But because I gave the harry potter films away to this girl she said she didn't have a blue-ray player to watch them on!

Again, all things happen for a reason, there was a reason why God didn't allow me to get rid of it sooner! So I gave her my blue-ray player for free. All these immaterial things, movies, games, gadgets etc belong to this world. I no longer need them or desire to use them. God showed me that I was ready to depart for them so that is what I done.

My family thought I was crazy, mental, overreacting and taking things too seriously! But I know that I listen to my God, my father and no one else!

He always knows what we need to do and not do on an individual basis. Great for you. It's one of those things you'll get criticized for but don't concern yourself with it. I believe when we follow those instructions, He'll trust us with more.

Also, we can treasure our thoughts, our reasoning more than Him. We reason all the time and go against what's in Scripture. That's one reason we're to renew our minds Rom 12:2.

basically things we like to have/do the most can sometimes be an obstacle in our relationship with God. That can be easily see when we spend more time with IT than reading the bible, having fellowship and praying for others. Our treasure should be the ones in heaven rather than on earth.

amazingly, God has a way of catching us red-handed when we feel dried up. No matter how much we indulge ourselves in our most favourite activity, that soon becomes dry, and that's a warning signal to us that it's time to adjust our focus!

The context this scripture is in speaks of not over concerning ourselves
with the cares of daily life... the Lord cares for His little flock. The 'selling',
could refer to all that is excess in our lives and causes us to loose our
focus of the Kingdom... where our real treasure is.

This scripture may be helpful, here Paul doesn't say to sell all that you own, but he does say to be content with what you already have.

Heb_13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Well I still agree with what God wanted me to do and he asked me to do it. The things I do have I don't spend as much time as I used to with them i.e. playing a game here and there.

That's really the ONLY thing that I would say I spend my time on, not a lot actually I hardly play a lot of games. I used to watch all my movies over and over regularly, now I no longer do that! I have no desire to watch any of the movies I have left accept my Biblical films I mentioned.

If we look at where no moth destroy...we are talking of not worldly things but of spiritual things.
Giving our possessions to charity means giving up our high thoughts of ourselves and think more highly of others and to feel the love of God towards others...in other words see others the way God does...feel his love for them.
Money belts to me would be about girding ourselves with truth. This verse is talking of not only about us abiding in God but him abiding in us...His Kingdom has come :)
When we give up our thoughts about how good we are and humble ourselves and walk in love we have become poor(humbled and loving towards others) but very rich in Gods eyes

yeah It is good to give when you can. and even good to throw away things if God compels you. I was for to long stuck in the things that I wanted to do, but I was a fool and see now that God has much better things for me. i don't want to go back, I want the priceless pearl. this life is way to lame, I want Christ.

i rejoice when I see people giving what they can! it really makes me happy.

really if anything gets in the way between you and God then you really need to despise it, really God is better, He is Love.

Are you saying that the bible's teaching about abstaining from covetousness is really about abstaining from self righteous thoughts? If so i disagree. Its true that we should abstain from all that is evil, whether it be thoughts of self righteousness or covetous thought, but they are not the same thing.

Hmmm....I only know what God has shown me of this scripture and others...I never once thought of covetousness being the issue here...but I will meditate on what you have said...

How is covetousness a part of this?

Other then to covet(or desire) those things which are good and of God.

Forgive me if i have misunderstood what you were saying, im not sure. As far as covetousness goes, it means wanting things, or being materialistic, it means conforming to the world instead of God's will because the world is materialistic by nature. (Luk 12:30) Jesus said to beware of covetousness and Paul said to let our conversation be without covetousness and to be content with the things that we have, i think that to beware of covetousness means that we should keep covetous thoughts in check by not allowing them to overtake us, this is important in today's world because there are many advertisements everywhere that are designed to make us want whatever product the seller is marketing to us. If we abstain from materialistic desires then we are obeying Christ, but if we allow our covetous materialistic thoughts to grow into desires for material possessions to the point that we are not happy without those possessions then we are in danger of being idolaters by putting the desires of the flesh above Gods will and Himself.

This is not to say we can't want things, its just to say that we cannot want them more than God, only God can make us happy, worldly possessions never make us truly happy, have you ever thought that if you just had a certain material possession, or money that you would be happy? But then you get that thing or that money and you are still not happy? That's because we are designed to worship God and we cannot worship God is we worship materialism at the same time. We cannot serve 2 masters, we will hate one and love the other, its better to hate covetousness than God, its something we should pray for if we are struggling with it, we can be honest with God because that's what he wants, we can confess our covetousness which is idolatry to God and ask Him to help us, that is what God wants us to do.

Mat_6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Luk 12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
Luk 12:22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
Luk 12:23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

Luk 12:29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
Luk 12:30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
Luk 12:31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Luk 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Luk 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
Luk 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luk 12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

Eph_5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints

Col_3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Heb_13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

I think we are on the same page :) What I have seen in the scripture is the things of God...not the world...I'm interpreting towards the love part..I think you saw what I saw...you got a glimpse of what I see :)

I agree to covet is not a good thing....but if you see what I see then God comes first whether we have money or not.

This parable is helpful in understanding what the Lord meant when He said to beware of covetousness.

Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

One thing I have learned about myself, and I think it is common to human nature, is that unless and until God takes things from me, it is rare that I can even 'see' that I have been living in covetousness or dependence on things. I have gone through so many cycles of losing-gaining, losing-acquiring, till I was worn out, and didn't care anymore about things. I didn't mature into the right attitude. God had to beat it into me and strip me of what blocked him out in ways and areas I just couldn't see. It was scary and painful, but the outcome was beneficial, because I'm not clinging to anything so much that I can't just let go, much like Matthew left his customs table and walked away to follow Jesus, or the other disciples, their nets, or Elisha, his plow.
I know that this is critical to becoming a fulfilled disciple, a soldier not entangled in the things of this world, because at any moment he may call me to some ministry or suffering that is greater and more painful than what I've gone through.
I feel much like Moses, who thought he was really humbling himself and giving up everything when he left the throne to join his suffering brethren, but found out that he really didn't have a clue, until God stripped him so totally, sending him into the wilderness for 40 whole years of following sheep -the profession that is abhorrent to Egyptians! But after all that refinement, he was finally ready, not because he thought he was, but because God knew that he was.
I think our sinful natures just won't allow us to really see ourselves as God does, and it may be better that way, because it would probably destroy even the best of us. Look at how often David said things like 'my sins are great, or they go over my head.' This wasn't referring to Bathsheba, but to the daily routine.
I really think Jesus meant what He said about 'where our treasure is, so will our heart be.' It's unavoidable. It's insidious. Job was richer than any, but he took in every orphan, and cared for every needy he encountered, and his servants. Wiberforce, Meuller, Wesley, Edwards, these are examples of people who had it, but knew how to give it all away as good stewards, not hoarders, of God's generosity. it isn't meant for us, but for us to be rewarded for blessing others with it. Our prayer should always be, 'Lord, how do you want me to bless someone with these talents of gold you gave me, so I can have true gold and your praise in heaven?'
Have it here, lose it there. Lose it here, gain it multiplied there.
'He is no fool who loses what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.' - Jim Elliot, martyr.

I always wondered if the parable about the talents of Gold were not just talking of wealth that God gives us, but maybe it also talks about what He has commanded us to do, if we cannot be faithful in the little things like obeying commandments, maybe he will not help us in the greater things. Maybe if we struggle to obey God in some things then maybe we should take baby steps and obey Him in at least one or 2 things that we have a problem with, no matter how hard it is, then maybe the Lord will help us obey in other things as well. That's what i'm currently doing, i'm remaining faithful to God in one of the biggest areas that i have been rebellious in over many years, its not easy but i keep obeying God in that area, and i Hope that He will be pleased and help in other areas, such as love, which is kind, patient and meek, i'm not all those things all the time and only the Lord can help me by bearing His good fruit in me, so i abide in Him by obeying what i can, i abstain from things like fornication and covetousness and i pray continually, its my Hope that by obeying God in these things that He will bear His fruit within me in the areas that i cannot obey in. The Lord said we cannot bear fruit unless we abide in Him, but i cannot abide in Him if i'm a covetous idolater or fornicator, i cannot serve 2 masters, so i'm remaining faithful where i can and hoping that He will make me faithful in all things.

Oh, I agree. I think it is stewardship over anything that God has put in our charge to minister. But I don't think it is so much (though I could be wrong) faithfulness with character; otherwise none of us would be able to serve. I think it is in the area of ministry. Like Peter commanded; 'If your gift is teaching, then do it as the oracles of God, if giving then give, if mercies, then show mercy', and so on. If you read the biographies - not the shallow ones, of the greats of church history, you will be astounded at their faults! I mean, I've been learning some of these things in the past 2 or 3 years, and they, like myself, are paradoxical contrasts in character. But, they heartily devoted themselves to faithfully pour out their gifts. The character will hopefully come too, but God help us, may it catch up to our given giftedness. Nevertheless, about the subject here, I do think that God holds us accountable for whether we hoarded the material wealth he gave us, or were his instruments to minister it to the needy and to ministry.
