The Pope of Rome has made another call for 1 Billion Catholics to faithfully observe the 40 days of Lent.

ZENIT - On the 40 Days of Lent

Why is it that the Pope of Rome calls for the celebration of Lent based on 40 days of fasting and prayers, but does not also call 1 Billion Catholics to celebrate the 7th day Sabbath once a week, which is based on the perfect number 7, and has a commandment written by the finger of God to back it up, while Lent is based on church tradition. It brings to mind what Jesus said to the Pharisees in Matthew 15:6-9;

". . . Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

Exodus 20:8-11;

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

Why would the Pope call all Catholics to celebrate the 7th day when Mass is offered every Saturday already?
And doesn't the majority of Protestant churches also worship on Sunday [as does the EOC]?

I thought this was a rather nice summation:
Thoughts?

The evening which follows the day of our sabbath pertained to it, John 20:19.

The Jews kept the last day of the week, beginning their Sabbath with the night (Gen 2:2; Lev 23:32; Neh 13:19), when God rested; but Christians honour the Lord better, on the first day of the week (Matt 28:1), beginning the Sabbath with the day when the Lord arose (Acts 20:7,11)
They kept their Sabbath in remembrance of the world's creation; but Christians celebrate it in memorial of the world's redemption; yea, the Lord's day being the first of the creation and redemption, puts us in mind, both of the making of the old, and redeeming of the new world.

Maybe the Seventh Day Adventist forum would be interested in such a question. I doubt that very many of us are shocked that the Pope is calling the members of his own church to keep a traditional observance of their own denomination rather than taking up the practice of a different church.

And as for why most Christians worship on Sunday, the Biblical answer to that has been discussed and answered many times.

:sigh:

Going to Mass is not the same as keeping the Sabbath holy. For one, it starts on Friday at sundown, and ends of Saturday at sundown. During that 24 hour period no secular work, or worldly pleasure seeking is to be done, but persons are to put those things aside and give themselves to worship, fellowship, Bible study, prayer, etc, etc. I doubt that kind of Mass is promoted or enforced by Rome.

Yes, you are correct. Sadly, most professed Christians refuse to obey the most plain and direct commandments of God, but instead follow the traditions of men instead.

Suit yourself, but we follow the New Testament in believing that we are no longer to be judged in the matter of days and feasts now that the Lord by his sacrifice on the Cross has freed us from the ritualistic laws previously required of the Hebrews. Romans 14.5-6 and Galatians 4.7-10

That's all that needs to be said.

Wrong. The Bible is made up of the OT and the NT, Jesus quoted 100% OT Scripture texts in his NT teachings. Yes, ceremonial feasts and days were to pass away, but the 10 Commandments are not ceremonial they are moral and apply to all being humans and angels for all time. The death of Jesus did not change things in such a way to enable men to continue in sin with impunity.

Agreed. Probably one of the most controversial topics on CF

http://www.christianforums.com/t7595979/
Is the Sabbath still something we should abide by?

I hear alot of Christians say that the Sabbath is only for the Jews and does not apply to Christians today?
Why does Jesus say
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Matthew 19:17

Last time I checked the Sabbath was one of those commandments.
So, what's going on? It tortures me inside to not know the answer.
Why would Jesus teach us to keep the Commandments if they weren't necessary?
I am only a novice so would really love someone with knowledge to answer this for me.
thanks

As I said, you may suit yourself but we have a different view that is based upon several Bible passages.

Perhaps you can drop by our churches some time and teach us how to keep the Sabbath holy. While you're at it, perhaps you can help to teach me how to keep from hating drivers on the road, and from overindulging in food, and from blurting out a cuss word when I bang my shins, and from sexual lust, and from wanting my neighbor's land, and from talking about people who don't meet various standards that I set for them, and from ignoring God all day and focusing on worthless things that seem to make me happier. You're obviously really good at the Sabbath thing - you must be really good at all the rest of those things as well, right?

Its not about how good I am, its about God's Holy Spirit that can empower you and me to obey and overcome sin and temptations. That is what the Gospel is all about. Traditions of men and worldly compromise have over time crept into most churches, and have diluted the power of the Gospel. Additionally, traditions not based on Scripture have obscured the most plain and powerful texts in the Bible. Satan loves it when people are ignorant regarding God's Commandments, because they define sin, and make sinners think twice before they transgress the Holy Law of God.

They are the Word of God. All of Scripture is inspired by God, inerrant, and profitable for our instruction.

True. But there are some texts in the Bible are so clear and important that God wrote them with His own finger, and the only texts that were of that nature were the 10 Commandments as listed in Exodus 20. And yet people feel that they can change or ignore something that was written with the finger of God! How presumptuous! What will excuse will that person have in the day of judgement?

Or women ;)

.

I think you may on to something.
Freeing up our sabbath Saturday for a list of household chores, and running churchly interference with football Sundays literally reeks of estrogen.
