Is there some Rabbinic ruling on this?
No Sis, but there seems to be a Higher ruling on this:
Gen 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
The original concept didn't include stars, just light and dark.

Ok.. here is what I am working on... You can not purchase spices after the Sabbath and yet prepare those same spices before the Sabbath. So how is it possible??

Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.

Luke 23:56 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.Festival Sabbath, Festival started right after he was buried. Next day was a regular day.

Luke 23:56 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
Resting, on the Sabbath, the weekly Sabbath.

This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down , and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid . 54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on .
Preparation day for the week of Passover, cleaning out the leaven, giving to the Poor, making unleavened bread, etc.

55 And the women also, which came * with him from Galilee, followed after , and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid .
They went with Joseph to see where he was laid, to see the actual tomb so they knew where to return to.

56 And they returned , and prepared spices and ointments; and rested * the sabbath day according to the commandment.

They kept the first day of unleavened by doing no work, and the next day they prepared the spices. Then came the weekly Sabbath, which they rested on, and after it ended, at sundown, they went to the tomb (Saturday night).

Does anyone know how long it takes to prepare spices?

According to this site:

Tombs were visited and watched for three days by family members. On the third day after death, the body was examined. This was to make sure that the person was really dead, for accidental burial of someone still living could occur. On these occasions, the body would be treated by the women of the family with oils and perfumes. The women's visit to the tombs of Jesus and Lazarus are connected with this ritual.

Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.

Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
This comes from translations made in the absence of an understanding of Judaism and festivals.

The first Shabbat mentioned - Mark 16:1, the one after which they went and bought spices, was Pesakh and the first day of Unleavened Bread. As you know Pesakh and the first day of Unleavened Bread is a Shabbat. That year this festival fell on what we call Wednesday evening thru Thursday evening.

The Shabbat in Luke 23:56 is the 7th day Shabbat.

Thus they bought the spices after the first day of Unleavened bread, prepared the spices Thursday and/or Friday, made Shabbat preparations Friday, rested Shabbat and early Sunday morning took them to the grave.

Oops!
Yeah, what Lulav said ;)

Yet unknown to these women.. the men were able to ...

John 19:40
Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
and that was all with the 3:00 death and 6:00 sunset which also included getting court's permission, verifying His death by the guards, taking Him down from the cross, and over to the tomb where he was laid, etc.

Not exactly unknown - the women knew where the body was and that the stone was too heavy for them.

It is my understanding that those initial spices were to cover the stench of decay, but not the entire burial process.

As the sisters said to Yeshua of their brother 3 days in the tomb, "My L-rd, by now he stinketh!"
