I'm not a strict cessationist in the sense that God can't gift someone with this gift in order to reach someone who speaks a different language. But what passes for speaking in tongues in most churches is gibberish and the fact that there is no interpretation verifies my conclusion.

The tongues spoken of in the Bible are still God's gift today. There are 3 kinds of tongues. The Bible tells us that we know not how to pray, but our spirit does - this kind of tongues is your prayer language, strictly between you and God. When God sends a Word to the church or a gathering - it must be interpreted or it is not from God. When speaking to a group in another language - God gives that language so the group can understand. I have a friend that witnessed this - he is an evanglist and was speaking at a foreign country mission - the interpreter he had sat down because he was speaking perfect language of this country.

People who dismiss the speaking of tongues are throwing out the very power of God.

I agree with you for the most part but wanted to add this for your thoughts on why I personally don't think we can call the communication between ones individual spirit to the Spirit of God a "prayer language" or tongue.

I believe the scripture that you are talking about is Romans 8:28 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express."

Key words in this vs are groans and words cannot express. Since the text tells us that the spirit "groans" I don't classify it as a tongue. Tongues can be interpreted but the groan described cannot be expressed through words which to me can't be interpreted so it is not a tongue.

As you pointed out tongues are to be interpreted for the edification of the entire body. Groans are spiritual intercession, unctioned by the Spirit of God during weakness. Again since its a groan and not words, then can we call it a language? Although there are several definitions of language. One of them is "a body of words and the system of it's use."

I do believe that speaking in tongues is a gift from God and should be used even today under the will of God. I also believe that it is personal for each individual that God gifts it to since each of us are individuals and are used according to our individuality. Im just not sure that I believe it to be a personal language since according to scripture, tongues should be interpreted. Someone should be able to interpret the tongue each one speaks which really doesn't make it our own personal prayer language. IMO.

I was raised thinking people who spoke in tongues were 'Holy Rollers' - never understood tongues nor had it explained to me, even though I was in church all my life.

I met a new friend who had such joy of the Lord that it was obvious she had something I didn't have. She ask me if I spoke in tongues - boy was I offended, my new friend was a 'Holy Roller' - the more I got to know her the more I wanted what she had.

I finally got a book 'In the shadow of His hand' and I was home alone and reading the book - it was about a preacher searching for the Holy Spirit - I just laid the book down and said 'God, if this is of you, I want it' - I had the Holy Spirit come over me so strong I felt like I had plugged into an electric socket - I had 3 strange words come into my mind - I spoke them out and for 3 hours I worshiped in tongues. There was no one to interupt - I can now pray in that language any time I want and often do and the power of those prayers are something I cannot explain. I have many examples of the power of those prayers. So I don't know what else to call it other than my prayer language.

My relationship with God is now so strong and so different and I actually have the Joy of the Lord - man made rules and laws have no meaning to me anymore - only my relationship with God, my hand in the hand of Jesus and led by the Holy Spirit - it is as different as night and day.

Your experience is that of many which is why I believe as well. Trust me I'm with you all the way on the gift of tongues and being able to flow according to the Spirit of God. I'm a believer.

But when it came to the context of the scriptures itself, I agree, that the term "prayer language" was not scriptural. BUT the way you explained your experience with that phrase makes perfect sense to me. I can understand why one uses that phrase even though it is not in the scriptures.

I also think that those who do not believe in being able to speak in tongues according to the Spirit of God, most likely do not have the gift so they have no experience to draw on.

Thank you for sharing with me and allowing me to share with you. God bless you.

"Speaking in tongues" in the bible was a way of saying that the Holy Spirit caused the people to begin to understand the language of everyone else who was speaking. Unless if I am highly mistaken, what you are referring to concerning members of your congregation is nothing more than working oneself up into a lying, babbling frenzy of doing nothing more profound than making odd sounds come out of your mouth.

So sad to see such bashing of such a beautiful gift. Remember the devil will always duplicate God in anything. But Christians are suppose to have the Holy Spirit to show them the difference. I can understand why some of you speak as you do - I was raised that way, not realizing what I was doing.

I will leave you to your bashing and pray that you will open your eyes to one of God's beautiful gifts (when used in the right way)

Very wise advice.

The devil will always try to pervert and counterfeit what is real.
