I know like many others, I've become more involved in taking care of my health, both physically, mentally and spiritually.

I'd love to hear what others do to keep themselves fit and healthy, what eating habits, work habits, recipes, supplements etc.

Here's a great video I just came across, it'll really make you think!

To stay healthy I make new years resolutions to work out more and lose weight. About 10 days in I quit them and go back to things like drinking coke and eating marinated squid for dinner. Did I neglect to mention the batter fried fish too. Too bad the wasabe tartar sauce expired 3 months ago.

Dh and I go to the gym together, we try to make it at least 3 times per week. I like weight lifting and pey much do only that. Running on a treadmill is the worst form of torture I can think of so I stay away from cardio! I know I should be doing some but I have yet to find something that doesn't bore me to death our consist of complicated choreography. I am NOT a coordinated person. I like to do yoga too.

I eat pretty healthy, I have completely cut out refined carbs (white bread, etc.), which had been the biggest contributor to my past weight gain. I can't seem to get enough greek yogurt and my snacks are typically grapes or some othet fruit. My only downfall is pizza, the kids love this local pizza budget we have, and I always eat too much when we go!

I have tried meditation but I find it impossible to clear my mind. I admire those who can.

We had gym memberships in the past, but getting there was always a hassle, so we adapted our garage into a gym. I work out there almost every morning. The good thing about a home gym is that I can get on the elliptical machine wearing pj's and without even looking in a mirror. :) We have it very well set up now. We have some very good equipment.

At the weekend, my h and I walk on Saturday and bike on Sunday. We have a greenbelt just 10 mins drive away, and it is wonderful, especially at this time of year. Just walking through there at a good pace, brushing shoulders with deer (almost! They are very tame) - it makes my heart sing because it's so peaceful and pretty and so much a testimony to God's goodness. I love it!! We go through much faster on Sunday, lol, on our bikes, but that is so much fun too. It is time that my h and I spend alone together, so that is also appreciated. We only walked 2 miles on Saturday because we are out of practice, and only biked 5 miles on Sunday for the same reason, but it's fairly easy to build up over time. I enjoy this time much more than gym time, but we wouldn't be able to do it every day.

For healthy eating, well, we have a variety of cookbooks, but mainly we keep it simple. I have never owned, and do not want to own, a deep fat fryer. Everything we eat is baked or steamed or broiled. I told my h on Saturday when were in the grocery store that we need to start incorporating far more of the bright, beautiful veggies on the shelves! I have been fully vegetarian for some months now, and the changeover has been a good one for me. I definitely feel healthier.

For habits - I always eat breakfast. I get up at 5am to work out, and an hour later or so, I shower and then go downstairs to eat, so not much later than 6:15am. At the weekend, I make a big container of oatmeal, and I eat a little every day, sprinkled with just a little sugar and cinammon (it's in one dispenser). I drink water all day, but I may have one decaff coffee with breakfast. I'm glad that I have early lunch at work because I am HUNGRY by 11:30! Sometimes I will eat an apple at about 9:30-10:00 or a yogurt or whatever fruit I have. Lunch is soup right now, because it's so warming and the building I work in is blummin' freezing. Brrrrrr. Crackers with soup, more fruit after soup, and in the afternoon a yogurt or fruit, depending on what I have eaten during the day. In the evening I eat light - a bean taco (no cheese, fat free beans), or a salad or something.

I have discovered Amy's Organic Soups, and that is my favorite soup right now. They aren't cheap, but they are GOOOOD! Yesterday I had red bean and rice and today I am having lentil and vegetable. :)

To stay healthy, I limit carbs and eliminate beans, grains, bread, cereal, rice, crackers, wheat, and most sugary fruits. I also do much more weightlifting than cardio and when I do cardio, I make sure it is under half an hour.

I also invest in grass fed meats and organic vegetables.

I only eat when hungry! I also take in a lot of Kombucha drinks to supply my gut with healthy levels of bacteria.

I eat loads of carbs and I managed to lose over 50lb. I eat a balanced diet. I make sure 1/3 of each meal is fruit or veg, I snack on fruit and I've cut down chocolate and other unhealthy snacks. I don't drink 'full fat' fizzy drinks. Pretty much the only thing I've cut down on is bread. I've substituted cream with low fat fromage frais or low fat creme fraiche. So, I've pretty much done everything you said not to do steeler, and I've lost loads of weight :p

I don't exercise per se, but I walk every where. At least 2 miles a day and that' just doing the school run, it's more if I go somewhere else during the day.

I knew that someone would post something like this. It depends on what types of carbs you eat. It also depends on hereditary, sleep, exercise, etc.

Well, I can assure you that sugar (carbs, especially from fruit and bread) is never a good thing for your body as seen here:

The 76 Dangers of Sugar to Your Health

As a woman, I often think of this when I feel like wanting some dessert:
  1. "Sugar can make your skin age by changing the structure of collagen.[66] "
Sugar and vegetable oils (corn, soy, safflower, soybean) are responsible for the nutritional deficiency of America's food. Fat, especially from Omega 3's and olive/coconut/palm oil, are not converted to trans fat when heated. A skinny person can be internally "injured" from the years of junk food and trans fat.

We joined a gym in November and have been going at least 12 times a month. I am taking vitamins and fish oil capsules. I have reduced my caffeine intake to 31mg a day and have not been taking any meds other than an occasional tylenol or benedryl (the second of which I am no longer going to take). Hubby is watching sodium in his foods (I can't say that I am doing the same :sorry:).

I started with walking, added running (my favorite!!), biking, swimming, weight training, yoga-ing, etc.
I eat healthy. Primarily organic, homemade and in a variety. My one weakness is baked goods, which is why I am SO in love with chocolatecoveredkatie.com. Healthier deserts, yay! Her sugar free fudge... mm....

Health and fitness is kind of our "hobby" in this house. So we're always doing something!

You should specify which carbs you mean then, because carbs could cover anything from pasta and rice, to chocolate bars. I don't eat much in the way of sugars, apart from fruit. But I do eat lots of complex carbohydrate products like pasta.

After I posted it occurred to me that by avoiding low fat products you possibly meant low fat pre-prepared foods. If that's the case then I'd agree with you on that, they are lower in fat but sometimes have huge amounts of sugar. They're only pretending to be healthier basically.

I'm an all things in moderation person. Alcohol will cause huge amounts of damage if consumed in vast quantities on a regular basis, but a glass of your favourite tipple every now and then doesn't hurt and may even have health benefits.

Athene you will feel a stirring in the force Monday 23 January as I land at Heathrow and motor over to Ipswich. If things seem off that day, mood is dark, wanna stay in bed covers over head, that sort of thing, this will be why. No worry, by noon 24th you will feel better.
