'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we will stop your benefits'

What would you do if your only option was taking a job in the sex industry?

  • I would take the job to survive/feed my family.

  • I would rather eat food out of dumpsters and be homeless.

A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing ''sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.

Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners – who must pay tax and employee health insurance – were granted access to official databases of jobseekers.

The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe.

She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her ''profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a brothel.

Under Germany's welfare reforms, anyone under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job – including in the sex industry – or lose their unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990.

'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits' - Telegraph

With the high rates of unemployment across America, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine this happening here, especially if the Democrats are re-elected. And why should legalized prostitution be restricted to women? This could be your future

1. this story is from 2005.
2. she didn't lose her unemployment benefits.
3. it was a legal quirk that has been quickly corrected.

Arbeitsamt vermittelt Prostituierte!

"Only women who have indicated they want to work as prostitutes will be sent job offers. It's utter nonsense that women who refuse a job in the prostitution industry will lose their unemployment benefits", said spokesman Ulrich Waschki. "If a woman is sent such a job offer, the only possibility is that the brothel or nightclub has lied about what kind of establishment it is."

It appears that prostitution is exempt from this law in Germany. There are rightly exceptions for certain professions and groups, you wouldn't force a Muslim to work in a non-halal abbatoir, for example.

Personally, I'd take the job in the sex industry, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to be forced to make such a choice. (I would also be a terrible prostitute/inappropriate content star/stripper, so it wouldn't be a long and productive career!)

I didn't answer the poll because I thought it was unfair. Assuming that I am me and I live in the UK I will never get to that state. If I lived in a worse country and my education counted for nothing then I might but only if I was in danger of dire consequences. I would think most people would under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

With the high rates of unemployment across America, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine this happening here, especially if the Democrats are re-elected.

What the hell is this? Seriously. What mentally stable Democrat would say such a thing? I'm for legalising prostitution personally, but not forcing it on people. Rather more like the opposite.

It's the free market.

Agreed. If someone doesn't like that sort of thing, they can voice their displeasure by not patronizing those establishments. I'm of the mindset that I don't have any say between what 2 consenting adults do with each other.

I still find it funny that prostitution (paying someone to have sex) is illegal, but inappropriate contentography (filming people who are being paid to have sex) is legal.

Its a job that involves what many view as sin. People are becoming less church minded. Give it time.

You don't have to view it as a sin in a religious way not to want to be a prostitute. Some types of people will, but some types of people are prostitutes and do inappropriate content already. The thing is in our type of society there is less likely to be a situation where it is like 'do this work or die', compared to the past.

That is rather lolable. That should be a word ;)

It has happened in other countries, for good and bad.

The single most popular adult site in the world is LiveJasmin, a webcam site which gets around 32 million visitors a month, or almost 2.5% of all internet users!

Almost all of the webcam girls are from eastern Europe or southeast Asia. At $8-$15/hour with no benefits, it doesn't pay enough for American women… except teenage girls and college students.

Most of the foreign women do it without the knowledge of their friends and family and only do it for Americans so that acquaintances in their homeland won't hear about it.

Believe me, sex work is the least of our worries in Germany.

Social injustice reigns supreme in our society, with the rich growing fat on the poor man's labour.

Is there anywhere where that's not the case?

Some of the Scandinavian countries have not yet become harlots of the new aristocracy, but the remaining retreats dwindle fast before the vast economic power that's continuously undermining democracy around the globe.

That is probably because it pops up every time you visit about 50% of the websites on the net. Want to read a comedy article? Livejasmin. Want to watch a TV programme? Livejasmin. It's very annoying.

That is just the beginning.

What's that you say? Poor people in desperate circumstances are being forced to turn to unsavory options like crime and prostitution?

We need to stop those damn socialists from providing any assistance or support to poor, desperate people!

That wouldn't shock me. There's two websites I frequent, a sci-fi movie website, and a video gaming website (so those frequented by "lonely geeks"), and every freakin' time I make a move off of the main pages, or click on a link I get a pop-up from that site. I bet I've clicked on that pop-up a dozen or so times myself by accident.

By the way, a word of caution: you might not want to advertise for them by putting up the full website. I'm betting it's against the rules here.
