Anyone else getting this book tomorrow? I am so excited I have been waiting forever for it to come out. I absolutely love Mark and Grace Driscoll and for them to write this book together...it is going to be amazing!! My husband and I are going though it together and then are going to see them on their book tour in September. Mark and Grace will be touring for this book for the next two years. They care so much about the issue of marriage and how in our society it is failing that they are going all around the country to talk about it. Very excited hope you all read it let me know if you do and what you think. =]

I'm not a Driscoll hater. I have a couple of his books and have the Mars Hill app on my phone. However, I found this review to be telling:

I am a read it for myself kind of girl. Sorry but critics and reviews are usually always wrong in my personal experience I don't find them very accurate. Literally every time they say something is great I hate it and when they say it sucks I love it. LOL

It sounds really good. Too many of us thought all we had to do was study the Bible and such things as relationships would come naturally. Everyone should read a book by a godly teacher to aid in this area.

It is very encouraging you are doing this, and especially that your husband is also.

For those who appreciate wise council, here is another review. My Review of Mark Driscoll’s “Real Marriage” | Denny Burk

Burk has some excellent points, yet I feel he is squeamish at an open, honest discussion of biblical marriage, a discussion that must also be equally open and equally honest when it comes to sexual issues. The body of Christ has for too long been afraid to talk about these things, which is why Christians are so uptight when it comes to those issues in their marriage.

I also have an issue with one assertion by Burk:

The bulk of the chapter gives an ethical assessment of a variety of sexual activities. The Driscolls invoke 1 Corinthians 6:12 as the basis for the evaluation, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything" ...
The value of the Driscolls’ taxonomy is only as good as the exegesis that it is based on, but in this case their reading of 1 Corinthians 6:12 is fundamentally flawed. The Driscolls read “all things are lawful” as if the phrase were Paul’s own declaration of Christian freedom, but that is mistaken. Almost every modern translation1 and a near consensus of commentators2 treat “all things are lawful” not as Paul’s words but as a slogan that Corinthian men used to justify their visits to prostitutes (cf. 1 Cor. 6:15). The NIV captures the correct interpretation:
“I have the right to do anything,” you say–but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”–but I will not be mastered by anything (1 Cor. 6:12).

This reflects not only the aforementioned squeamishness, but it also supports a bad translation on the part of the NIV. There is no basis in the Greek text for the phrase "you say." It is entirely a manufacture of the NIV translators, who obviously felt the need to curb Paul's comments. Sorry, but like the NASB, ESV, RSV, etc., they should have let the Greek speak for itself.

I found disagreement among the major commentaries -- Darby's, Henry, Gill, for example -- relative to who said it, Paul or the Corinth church members. Henry feels Paul was quoting the Corinthians. I'm not so sure.

Paul had taught that a Christian could use liberty in regard to things indifferent. Some seem to have held that this justified indulgence, as was taught by the Epicureans. Paul says in substance, "Be it so; but all things are not expedient," for the Christian.

The underlined portion of the paraphrase indicates Paul said it, but they misunderstood him.

I wasn't going to participate in this thread, being the old divorced ninny that I am ... but then again I occasionally believe there is room for love in my life again, and if so, I don't want to recommit the same mistakes. The book sounds like a winner, and I might even read it ... after the Super Bowl.

I agree Christians have become so uptight about sex and there is very little understanding of what is ok and what isn't. Many couples just stop having sex all together and their marriages are suffering because of it. They associate it with being dirty or perverted. It is a major issue with Christian marriage that is leading to divorce. Sex is good and was created by God and we need to learn how to enjoy it with our spouses and not be afraid of it. Mark Driscoll is not perfect he is still human but I love that a pastor is being bold about these issues and is speaking up about it. We need to stop running from sex and being afraid of it because our marriages are suffering. And how can we be the standard for the world when our marriages are suffering just as fast.

This book opens up a lot of much needed discussion among married couples today. =]

another Good ONE is called the HOLY BIBLE!! you can even read this one with your spouse also!! me and my wife of 32 years, both have copies of this Book, we even gave copies to our kids!!

This book is scripture based and Biblically based I wouldn't read it if it wasn't. There is nothing wrong with reading books from other authors as long as they stay Biblical in what they are teaching.

I'm extremely excited and might just pick up a copy this Sunday at the Mars Hill I attend. I've seen a lot of Christians beat up on Driscoll without understanding the culture he preaches to. The mix of biblical conservatism and cultural liberalism can irk some conservative Christians, but it gets a liberal, drug abusing, fornicating, feminist like me to walk into church and find Jesus Christ.

I'm extremely glad that Grace and Mark are tackling this subject. It always causes an uproar when you marry religion and sex (no pun intended). I feel a bit sorry for their inboxes. I'll most likely use this series as an excuse to get some friends to come to church by telling them the pastor is talking about sex .

I think Driscoll is right to say the church in general is prudish...but I haven't read the book and can't comment on its content. His series on the Song of Solomon was very sexual and just weird.
