• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Heart palpitations

Hi everyone,

I am new to this thread, I have been having heart palpitations over the last couple of weeks, they are very scary, I went to the ER last week and of course by the time I got there the palps had stopped and they were not able to pick them up on the EKG. I just need prayer, I have a pretty stressful life, my daughter is on drugs and she also has an 8 month old baby who is now living with me because she can't or wont take care of her. I love this little one so much, but I have forgotten how hard it is to take care of a little one 24/7.

Anyway I am seeing a cardiologist next week, I could really use your prayers, I have asked the Lord to just give the Doctor the wisdom and knowledge to know how to treat me. Thank you everyone, I really appreciate it. Jan

i was just browsing the net for more info and a lil comfort on heart palpitations ... ok, more for comfort than info, ( a lil background on me ... i'm 24 w/ a history of wpw and svt so i know quite a bit bout palpitations) currently i've been havin them for almost the past 24 hrs,nd its drivin me nuts...i'm also 34wks pregnant with my 3rd child, the docs have me on meds for the palpitations and i guess i'm just going to try to ease your mind a lil ... there are thousands of reasons you could be having these palpitations ... and about 90% of those reasons are hardly anything to worry about .. hope this helps... i will be praying for you .. i know what its like believe me...it can get very scary

Hi, I also have heart palputaions but I have also had 3 heart attacks. Common things like caffeine, some kinds of meats, alcohol can cause them. Your cardiologist will probably do a stress test or an angiogram. The tests sometimes will show problems an EKG can't.

I get them once in a while myself, only one bad episode about 7yrs ago sent me to the emergency room. Everything turned out okay and eventually things got much better after getting on a heart healthy diet+excerise.

What is your diet like? do you have high blood pressure?

I have PAC's as well, both PAC's and PVC's can be very frightening, I know having even just one scares me, however, with a structurally normal heart, even having 100's a day will not harm you, they certainly do affect your quality of life however. I do a lot of research on hearts and arrhythmias and I belong to a couple of forums that deal with them too, they are like support groups, they do help. I am here for anyone that needs to talk.
Hugs

Going to a cardiologist was the best thing I could have done after I started having different kinds of palpitations. It eased my mind and I have a specialist to turn to if I need him.

After my first visit I had a stress test, a 24 hour monitoring device, and several other kinds of tests including blood work. I found out that I don't have a serious problem and the main thing my doc told me was to exercise regularly. He told me in my case it was better to walk longer than faster. I wish you good luck with your Doctor's appointment and will pray for you. God bless.

I pray that your doctor visit goes well and that it eases your mind. I can sure relate to the fears though. I have occasional irregular heart beats, PAC's they are called, and the "weird" feeling is really what scares me, LOL, if I could not feel them, I doubt if I would worry so much, but gee, when you get those strange "thumps" in your chest, you are bound to worry some.

"Normal" I think is an overstatement. Not always an emergency situation is probably more accurate. Most likely it's aortic fibrillation (or "afib"), and if that's the case that's something you need addressed. A higher incidence of stroke is associated with that--I think the hemorrhaging kind.

I did the Vitamin B-complex and over a period of about 5 days they went away. But then I didn't have any other symptoms.

Sometimes they don't know what causes them. Mine just started one day without warning and that first halter monitor 24 hr test showed 8,000 a day. For some that would freak them out but the doc kinda shrugged and said nothing looked bad and as long as it wasn't causing problems (pain or fainting) they'd leave it alone. He treated those 8,000 as not being a hassle. Said around 16,000 a day is when they worry.

I have since been to a specialist but by this point (4 years later) they are a lot less common, though still present. I just keep on going. They tell me exercise is fine. They can do stuff if it causes problems (ie. ablations or meds). They put me on Toprol for BP a long time ago and this helps with PVCs/heart rythm issues.

It's not an age related thing either. The EKG tech told me he knew of a kid under 8 who was getting around 16,000 PVCs a day and they ended up doing the ablation because it was hurting her (pain). So it's not an uncommon thing. My doc said palps are common after 50 in most of the population. It's the number and problems they may cause that need watching.

I did go for a cath recently to rule out heart disease as the cause of the PVCs but all was great (Thank you Lord!!) No sign of coronary artery disease, which, at my age and weight and family history is a blessing right there.

So really, seeing the specialist is the most important part. He/she can guide you from there...tell you what's worrisome and what isn't.

Um, Brak - I think afib is short for atrial fibrillation (not aortic fibrillation). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

True. - Premature contractions happen across the Life-span of people:
from newborns: as their heart is learning to adjust... to everything,
plus their preborn hormone... levels are dropping.

Thru their childhood, as they continue to adjust to all sorts of icky-stressors.

Thru adulthood, because for one thing our natural-hormone levels also drop,
along with everything else. AND WHY therefore it is VITAL that people
don't just nilly-willy trust any doctor; but Educate ourselves, so you can stay ON TOP of your own health.

Mine just started one day without warning and
that first halter monitor 24 hr test showed 8,000 a day.

oh really??
IF I ever had "8,000 a day" I'd be totally freaked OUT.

On my BAD-days, I may have up to 300  and
that freaks me out, right there.

I have since been to a specialist but by this point
(4 years later) they are a lot less common, though still present. I just keep on going.

They tell me exercise is fine.
See, re the EXERCISE - I knew it all along: & the funny thing is,
when I practiced earlier this year,
(in all those years I skated this past decade), I never had PC's - and I attribute that to the elated  FUN, &
happy excitement of learning this, or that skill, & move on the ice...

I suffer from PC's primarily when I'm UNnaturally work DISstressed,
then I get a string of maybe 50-100 PAC's at a time.

I did go for a cath recently to rule out heart disease
as the cause of the PVCs but all was great (Thank you Lord!!)
No sign of coronary artery disease,
which, at my age and weight and family history is a blessing right there.
GOOD for you!

I have next to zilch CAD (coronary artery disease):
99+% of my body's vessels are as clean as a whistle...
and
I eat healthy
&
I supplement with proven Natural  substances
&
I exercise (well, as I am regrowing a new Stronger  heart,
Find me a skating-Alternative, but only for a few months
&
I maintain the best-attitude  :

(when in hospital, all 5 docs said: "must give-up Skating,
for at least a year, if not forever"
Only selling non-stop fear, They should hang their heads in shame!!)
Told them that they can not own me (emotionally & physically); for I am ALIVE on Jesus' terms.
and
I will win..... on Jesus' terms. PRAISE God!

I went to a cardiologist also for my palpitations. Wish I hadn't. Now I'm stuck on Toprol and I never feel right. Hands always cold and tingly. Stupid cough. Bad esophageal issues. Yuck, yuck, yuck!!! Spent my birthday in the ER with chest pains...from what?....Toprol! Wish I'd read about upping B complex vitamins first!
