The recent class-action lawsuit brought against Taco Bell raised questions about the quality of food many Americans eat each day.

Chief among those concerns is the use of cellulose (wood pulp), an extender whose use in a roster of food products, from crackers and ice creams to puddings and baked goods, is now being exposed. What you’re actually paying for – and consuming – may be surprising.

Cellulose is virgin wood pulp that has been processed and manufactured to different lengths for functionality, though use of it and its variant forms (cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, etc.) is deemed safe for human consumption, according to the FDA, which regulates most food industry products. The government agency sets no limit on the amount of cellulose that can be used in food products meant for human consumption.

[Note: Humans are unable to digest cellulose since we lack the appropriate enzymes to break it down. This is a food adulterant and another example of the wholly corrupt nature of the federal agency responsible for food safety but continues to prove itself more concerned with corporate profit. ~Ed]

The USDA, which regulates meats, has set a limit of 3.5% on the use of cellulose, since fiber in meat products cannot be recognized nutritionally.

I heard there was a huge problem of people using dihydrogen monoxide in food too. I can't believe all the chemicals and additives in food.

--You do know that cellulose is the basic component for plant structures?

1/3 of all plants are made of cellulose. So, your non-meat items are just loaded with it! Oh Noes!

We also lack the enzymes to break down FIBER. That's the whole point!

Regardless of whether the article is crap or not (it likely is, I didn't really look at it) and regardless of whether cellulose occurs naturally, doesn't anyone else find it mildly off-putting that crap like this is added to so many food products? Carageenan is another one. It's in tons of deli meats because it's a good way to get you to pay whatever per pound for water instead of actual meat.

It's another reason I try to avoid processed convenience junk. I'll take the natural cellulose in whole foods, thank you very much. You can keep the stuff designed to bulk up what already amount to empty calories so that I can pay good money for an additive my body can't even put to good use.

(yawn) The next time I sit down to a nice green lettuce salad, I'll remember the article, and snicker.

Because lettuce, boys and girls, is nothing but cellulose. Human beings, as was pointed out, cannot process cellulose---it just goes on through the digestive system and out. That's why you can eat a ton of it and never gain any weight.

But, if they think cellulose is so horrible, then they'd better stop eating green salads. I mean, what can I say?

I'm all for natural foods and buy organic when I can. I'm not a nut about it, but I can certainly think of worse things to ingest other than wood. I mean, I make loose leaf teas all the time! They are all plants: leaves, bark, berries, rinds, roots, flowers and stems!
So, honestly, I'd be more concerned about artificial food coloring than powdered wood...

Glory be!

Well some of the stuff they use for making "natural" food coloring doesn't sound all that appetizing either :)

I just don't see why it would be so hard to use hibiscus and beets for red& calendula or tumeric for yellow...I mean, a little goes a long way with these herbs and their color is super potent!

Glory be!
