One of the most vivid images from Tuesday night's Occupy Oakland protest shows a man lying in the street bleeding from the head after a tear gas attack by police.
Occupy SF identified the man as 24-year-old Scott Olsen, an Iraq war veteran. Olsen has a fractured skull and is in critical condition at Highland Hospital in Oakland, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Wednesday afternoon, members of Occupy Oakland said Olsen was surrounded by his friends and fellow Iraq war veterans in the

It is a shame that a two tour Iraq veteran is treated like this by the police. There are going to be more Veterans joining the movement. There are no jobs for Vets and the Govt does nothing.

He should have known the possible consequences of joining up in an illegal protest.

Your too young to understand the nuances. I am a veteran and I am going to stand by a Veteran. Civil disobedience is part of what veterans fought to uphold.

Does that give the police the right to fracture his skull and leave him in critical condition ? I think not. I won't lash out at you, because I understand you don't have the perspective. But many blacks were beaten and had police dogs sig'd on them by police during the civil rights protests.

My Dad stood on picket lines many years back, fought with police and hired thugs, while trying to ensure that workers had decent health care, vacation pay, sick time, weekends off.

When you face adversity in life, then come back and lecture me, ok ?

I respect you veterans, but that doesn't put you above the law. Police where being shot at with paint balls, paint was being thrown at them, bottles where getting chucked at them, and police in riot gear gave them a warning to leave before they start the tear gas, the Vet made his choice when he ignored the police. Of course this one incident is now going to be a rally point for the illegal protesters to claim police brutality yatta yatta yatta.

Everything about these protests is sad, including the response.

Further, it all indicates the progressive errosion of the character of our society from one of freedom, honor, and personal responsability towards the character of the mob in ancient Rome, or angry peasants with pitchforks.

It is inevitable that as the people lose restraint and responsability the government and their agencies will assume more force to maintain order and control.

I'm not saying thats good or right, it is simply the inevitable balance of freedom vs order.

We live in a time when people have utterly forgotten that life is more than food and cable TV. We have forgotten that it is better to scrape by with dignity and honor than to live comfortably as a slave.

Did you know it was illegal for blacks to sit at the front of the bus ? Did you also know that it was illegal for blacks to drink off the same water fountain as whites ?

Did you know that years ago the US Govt attacked unemployed veterans who set up a similar tent city and shot many to death ?

Did you know that the US Govt shot and killed 4 college students at Kent State ?

There are veterans, college students and citizens from all walks of life who have no access to the politicians in Washington. It is the Corporations that pay for access via lobbyist who get all the favor.

It is the tax payers of this country who bailed out the banks and auto industry, who now lay people off and ship our jobs offshore to slave labor.

This country was founded on civil disobedience. Five miles from where I sit, British soldiers shot and killed 13 civilians during the Boston massacre.

If you want to buy the hype and drink the Kool Aide, then be my guest. But the time is coming when Americans are going to stand up.

Hey if you want to link this little hippie gathering to the struggles of the African Americans and such then thats fine with me, but I think that's a bit of an insult to those who fought for such noble causes. Lets not forget that there are LEGAL ways to protest what these guys are protesting...they chose the illegal rout, THUS illegal protest.

Are you going to argue a point? or are you going to devolve to saying that because I have not served my country, then my points are not valid? get real for a second. You have taken this one incident, and the person turned out to be a war vet (regrettably) and now all of us who are against what he was standing for are evil tyrants.

Actually you lost validity when you started to call people dirty hippies. When you grow up I will engage you.

I have given you arguments, and yes. A very large majority of the people that where at that particular occupy movement where hippies, communists ect, and the sanitation was deplorable..it actually became a public health concern. Regardless, I use one not so bright and happy term to describe the people at that protest (get over it) now your going to shut down, call me a child, and someone who hides behind the computer rather than join the armed forces? PLEASE give me something better than that.

i am under the impression these homeless ppl werent protesting, but camping there.
For lack of a place to live.
It was illegal to camp there without a permit. They where performing an illegal "occupation" and whether there was homeless people there, I'm sure some where. However a good deal of them where not homeless, they where all equipped with cell phones, Cameras, Laptops ect.

The concern was hazardous waste....hence police effort.
A portion were homeless... but i dont know the count.
The issue is - this man is hurt.

His skull is bashed open and he needs prayers.

Yes, along with an illegal occupation of the land without a permit..along with crime and other such things.

A portion were homeless... but i dont know the count.
Homeless people need to follow the law as well.
The issue is - this man is hurt.

His skull is bashed open and he needs prayers.
Yes this is tragic, and he needs our prayers, however this thread wasn't really made specifically at him, its got an agenda against the police action taken.

This was not a prayer and support thread from the beginning at all.

Praying for his recovery.

I wish our country would do SO much more for our Vets ..... I absolutely support them, and their plight.

The thing of it is this "occupy protest/movement" doesn't have a "focus" except for "wallstreet greed". It is NOT focusing on the plight of our Veterans ... which go waaaaay back. It isn't focusing on the plight of our homeless veterans either.

And I think it's awful that a vet was critically injured in this situation. I also hate to say this, however, Oakland has been known for it's somewhat "agressive" behavior. [e.g. Oakland Raider fans - they come down here, and a guy was stabbed , among other things. And that's over football.]

And yes, Michie. It was in the news that Acorn is funding the "occupy protest".

I would like to know "how" all this is helping. In reality, I saw a woman lose her livelihood for her and her family today as a result of the threats, filth and multitude of problems that were caused by these "camping protesters" and resulting in her losing her business. :(

This whole thing is pathetic.
