• Has never claimed to have spoken in tongues
 • Has been accused of working with the masons and getting support from them
 • Has been accused of stating that "all roads can lead to heaven"
 • Has been accused of neglecting his famly in pursuit of his gospel enterprise and preaching schedules
What I do know is this........

 • He is the greatest evangelist i have ever heard
 • If he isn't baptised in the Holy Spirit, then those that are need to take a leaf out of his book.
 • God anoints who he chooses, and Billy is anointed, whether he has the "in" "on" "upon" or "office" variety
He has lived the life to the best of his ability and by combining DEATH to SELF and being open to the SPIRIT.....

I don't know much about the man as I've always avoided him wherever possible.

I recall when I was a child, everyone I ever heard spoke well of him, sinners and saints on TV and radio and those around me, and I asked how that could be a good thing when Jesus said "woe to you when all men speak well of you". I never got a satisfactory answer, so I never payed any attention to the man.

I could be way off-base, but I wouldn't know since I don't listen to him or read his books.

I'm especially interested to hear the bulk of this board speak up about Billy Graham. My impression (based on my own experiences in Charismatic circles) is that Billy Graham gets a bad rep. Yet...

...he has led a pure life unspotted by scandal like most of his contemporaries
...he has led countless people to the Lord
...he has remained a steadfast representative to Jesus to several US presidents and various public events (9/11, Iran Contra, etc)

I have a lot of respect for Billy Graham. Particularly as an evangelist.

He's not perfect, of course, and I disagree with some of his teachings and some of the things he has done, but overall he's been a great asset to the church.

peace,
Simon

No matter what one thinks of Billy Graham just look at all the souls that came to Christ because of his ministry.

I would have to say he was a fruit bearing tree.

Matthew 7:16
By their fruit you will recognise them.................

The man certainly produced good fruit, a pitty we don't all play as big a part in saving so many souls for Jesus. He may not have been perfect but that is because he was made part of the human race. None of the human race is perfect, no matter how much we sometimes like to think we are! I would think God would be saying to him "well done thou good and faithful servant"

I think you are mistaking the "Baptism of/in/by/with the Holy Spirit" with the gift of tongues (the typical Pentecostal mistake). They are totally unrelated. The Baptism of/in/by/with the Holy Spirit is the action of the Holy Spirit that inducts us into the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12.12-13) and tongues are simply a gift of the Holy Spirit as is any other gift, nothing more, nothing less. But I do agree with you, there is no better example of modern Christian evangelism than Billy Graham.

Charismatics could learn from him. in addition to his God given ability to win souls, he has an impeccable reputation all while amassing a personal fortune that would put the biggest prosperity preachers to shame.

I appreciate his ministry greatly, but poor peoples tithes and offerings have given him a retirement salary of just over 48,000 a month. A 40+ acres estate the includes a private lake, aircraft and houses.

An the phenomenal thing is that none of thisnformaton is spoken of and you have to literally hunt for it

So, where do you get these stats? They sound a little fictional to me.

IIRC, before starting ministry Billy Graham promised the Lord that he would never take a salary more than $200,000 (or a million, or some figure around there), and to the best of my knowledge, he has continued to keep that promise. Most of the money that goes into his ministry is used for outreach or charity.

Dig for them - it takes a little effort, but if you look, you will find them.

It is always best to find this type of information out for yourself, then you have no dispute with the sources. His salary is not easily found - I wonder why his ministry doesn't disclose it.

Good searching to you!

So, a salary of between 200,000 to 1,000,000 a year? That's a big chunk from offering from the poor people who fill the stadiums for his Gospel show. 48,000 a month X 12 months would be 576,000 a year, so it fall into the range you quoted.

Either way the guy has major money all provided from his ministry.

I don't subscribe to the "health and wealth" gospel (and if I am not mistaken, neither does Mr. Graham) but let's take a step back and really think about this:

Billy Graham has been on the scene for how many years now? 40? 50? And you're saying that after faithfully preaching the gospel for all that time and building a juggernaut of a Christian organization, he's not entitled to a piece of it? Keep in mind that a lot of the money he received is NOT from "poor people" (this criticism sounds like a red herring anyway), but from profits from his many books, audio tapes, DVDs, speaking appearances, conferences, etc.

Additionally, let's compare Billy Graham to other preachers of his ilk. The money and luxuries he receives are far, far less than the likes of Benny Hinn and Joel Osteen, just to name two examples. Billy Graham's ministry has never been wracked by financial scandal (can't say the same for a lot of Charismatic ministries), and like I said, I'm pretty sure he has always honored the "pay cap" he promised God that he'd follow.

In all honesty, for all the souls he's saved while staying pure in his relationship with Christ (how many Charismatic mega-preachers can claim the same thing?), I think that a bit of hard-earned money isn't something we should deny the man.

You made the claim, you back it up. It's not jimbo's job, it's yours. Shifting the burdon of proof is still a fallacy, as far as I recall.

Shifting the Burden of Proof – occurs when speakers do not prove their own claims while forcing others to prove them.

A standard rule in argumentation is “he who asserts must prove,” meaning that the writer bears full responsibility to prove that his or her claims are true. Writers and speakers, especially when cornered with tough questions, often speak authoritatively, but they sometimes assume that their assertions are valid and place the onus of proof onto the audience.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
If someone claims to know a fact, always look at its source. If the arguer cannot validate or justify his own remarks, then they probably are not valid (and cannot be considered valid anyway until proven otherwise). The audience does not bear any responsibility to prove the speaker’s arguments.

This fallacy is also called an “appeal to ignorance” because the action of passing this responsibility onto the audience suggests that a group of unprepared non-experts is appearing qualified to speak, when they clearly are not.

You can't make claims and expect other people to back them up.

Sorry, but it doesn't work like that, not in any culture, not in any sphere of life. The one that makes the claims has to back them up or retract them.

Please provide some sort of source, reference or link for your claims.

Here's a reputable source that says Graham's retirement salary is close to $200,000:
http://www.ministrywatch.com/profile/billy-graham.aspx

Personally, I think that's too much, but it's a far cry from your claims of $576,000 plus other benefits.

peace,
Simon

Ministry watch is hardly a bastion of truth, nor do they offer any proof.

Why is it so hard to find out what his personal wealth is?

I can find lots on Osteen and the Hinn types - but nothing on him. I wonder why there is nothing on Graham?

As I have previously said, I don't have anything against Billy Graham making money - I don't have anything against the prosperity quacks making money either.

But does everyone kiss Graham and curse others.

An example:

Name a man who:

Calls himself an evangelist

Flies in private jets
Makes millions of dollars on books and other media
lives in a multi-million dollar estate

Receives gifts from rich people
Takes tithes and offering from poor people.
Enjoys celebrity status and treatment where ever he goes.

Is it Joel Osteen or Billy Graham

It accurately describes both

Sorry, I completely disagree - the individual finding their own fact ensures the facts to their own mind. It also eliminates the need to back up the context or validity of the source.

There are too many who just like to argue.

Thank you for your input.
