Oh come on DAD even you can see that this poster comes from a time when racism was the norm.
No, that never even occurred to me. I suspect people that think like that have racist tendencies.

The picture is basically depicting the perfect Christian family and if we are to accept this then what of the other peoples?
? It depicts something other than the occult ugly comics in Poe's sig. Seemed innocent to me, believers looking up, happy to be saved. You harping on their skin color is concerning. I mean if one of the kids was colored, would that make it better..? What, families can't be one color now??

The poster is racist in the sense that what it depicts to the message it is trying to convey is purely racist!
Insane. Find a mirror.

I'm wondering if Mzungu realizes that this is a white family that actually missed the Rapture, but got saved during the Tribulation period?

I guess he wants a poster of a non-white family missing the Rapture?

Or, more likely, he hasn't a clue what he's whining about.

He's just trying to make us look bad, without realizing that basic doctrine is making him look silly.

So how can we tell they missed the rapture?

Funny how some get so choked up at white people smiling. I can't imagine why.

Heck if they posted a pic like this, it would not invoke hatred in me at all?

That's a picture of the SECOND COMING, which occurs at the end of the Tribulation period, known as Armageddon.

I take it, it is a picture of a family rejoicing as Jesus comes back to put an end to this terrible battle, which is raging in the background.

I'm sure you would be smiling too, if you were them.

No, no, no, you missed my point. I wanted to know where the picture itself came from. I'm not making any comments on theology or anything like that.

I just find the picture hilarious. I really can't say why. Maybe it's the fact that dad's tie is immaculately and perfectly knotted, maybe it's the unscathed, unwrinkled visages of the family, maybe it's the wife in her 1950's best.

It's just a GREAT picture!

I know it's wrong to find that kind of picture funny because it represents for some people an idealized fantasy happiness of eschatology, but the style and the colors and the implications and the jarring disconnect (the perfect tie, the clean clothing, the fire behind, the darkened skies above with hints of light shining in.

It's scary too, but mostly kinda funny.

Again, my apologies. I'm not talking about the theology here. It could have been about anything. It's just so 1950's!!!!

Your name almost seems familiar. Reminds me of some guy that used to post here. Is that you? Licked your wounds enough to dare to do a few posts already? It's only been what...a few years? I would have figured you would need more time..:)

No, you just bored the h*** out of me. You weren't shapr enough to inflict any "wounds", Dad. Your general hamfisted attempts at "philosophy" were sad at first but when you couldn't seem to get your head around any further discussion of them, I just got really, really bored with you.

I haven't read much of your new stuff, I assume it is more of the same confused semi-science and mangled epistemology.

I was just commenting on the picture.

I liked it. I wanted to know where you got it. I found the blog from the "properties" tag of the picture. So I don't need any information you may have. As per usual.

I must disagree with this. I don't think the picture is "racist" in the sense that the painter probably had no thought whatsoever about racism.

It's just so 1950's! It's such a great example of a standard-issue type of painting of this type of theology and concept. I honestly do NOT believe it is intended to be racist.

If you look back in the 1960's there are many paintings of a similar nature of God's love and salvation and stuff like that that contain people of color from all over the world.

The style is just something I find funny. Could be that it is actually very good painting! It is very good near realism kind of depiction.

But it is also in its own way "over the top". That's kind of what I love about this.

When I was young my mom had some painting of a blonde-haired boy laying in a field looking off in the distance and his pet collie lay beside him. I had a very irreverent friend who came over one day and asked if that was Jesus and Lassie.

I must admit even though at the time I was sure the comment was blasphemous, I had to laugh a little inside. Now that I've become an atheist I can appreciate the comment, but I'm also certain it is insulting to Christians which isn't very nice.

But I still find Dad's sig file picture funny. And I kinda wish I didn't. But I do.

Instead of keeping a certain skin color out of a restaurant, they keep Christian teachers and the bible and God out of schools, and government, etc etc etc...progress.

There are no laws that I am aware of in the U.S. keeping Christians out of public office, there are laws keeping science in the classroom free of religious ideas not founded in science, but other than that there really are almost no discriminatory laws against Christians in the U.S. that I have heard of. There are however laws keeping atheists out office and public life (LINKY).

Also: do not confuse the idea of keeping religion out of politics (as in the Separation Clause) with discrimination against Christians. As opposed to some of the laws linked above which actively keep someone from doing something because they are atheists.

Discrimination is keeping someone from doing an unrelated activity because of a belief or lack thereof. Keeping church and state separate is helpful for both.

Christians in the U.S. are so well cared for and so highly respected within the U.S. that it would be impossible to get elected to the Presidency of this country without claiming some mantle of Christian faith. Indeed our churches are tax exempt! We go out of our way to give them special priveleges!

Just look at the scandal of Obama the "secret muslim"!

It is so sad that Christians in the U.S. (one of the most religious developed nation in the world) who find some reason to feel "persecuted".

It's kinda sick, especially from myend of things. In a recent poll atheists were found to be among the most "distrusted minorities" in the U.S.

So please, if you think you are discriminated against, maybe you should visit the U.S. sometime. We love Christians. It's the people who aren't Christian we seem to have a problem with.

As a small quibble, racism doesn't require that the perpetrator be aware of it. Racism only requires that the actions of the racist either harm or marginalize members of a disadvantaged race preferentially.

For example, if an employer preferentially hires white people over black people despite having same qualifications, it doesn't really matter what is going on in that person's head: their actions are racist. It may, for instance, be something as innocent as just being used to working with white people all day long, and as such the image they have of the ideal employee includes, unbeknownst to them, being white. So that when the black person comes in for an interview, they may reject said person just due to an unthinking gut feeling, without even realizing they are being racist.

This image is similar in that it defaulted to the ideal Christian family being white. Probably without thinking about it.

So how can we tell they missed the rapture?
Since the title of your picture is "Second Coming", I assumed they missed the Rapture, since the Second Coming is at the end.

And yes, I realize the Second Coming is in two phases: the Rapture and the Return; but the fire and smoke in the background smack of Armageddon in progress.
Funny how some get so choked up at white people smiling. I can't imagine why.
That's because we're supposed to be worried about global warming, asteroid impacts, overpopulation, another ice age, global warming, Y2K, and nature knows what all else.
Heck if they posted a pic like this, it would not invoke hatred in me at all?

How dare you post this!

Now it looks like they've quit their jobs, sold their houses, and are on a hillside awaiting the Rapture.

What's wrong with you, man!?

The 'ideal Christian family' wouldn't have gone through the Tribulation period, either.

Indeed! If you're going to see God you better dress for success!
Yup:

Revelation 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Well, not to quibble, but even the father's shirt looks like it could be whiter. Maybe mom needed to use "All Temperature Lamb's Blood" detergent.

A 1950s US family see a bright light in the sky, I'm surprised they're not hiding under a table.
Christians seeing the hope of ages are not the ones who need to fear. Smiles and hope and conviction are anything but 1950ies. If I posted a pic of Abraham, you would likely insult the era as a time of goat herders. Etc.

There are no laws that I am aware of in the U.S. keeping Christians out of public office, there are laws keeping science in the classroom free of religious ideas not founded in science,

They apply separation of state and religion not to evo beliefs, but to mainly Christian beliefs. If any congressperson or president, etc said that they wanted prayer in schools, and to trust God for protection and bring troops all back, and stop killing babies, etc etc..they would be disposed of I bet.

but other than that there really are almost no discriminatory laws against Christians in the U.S. that I have heard of. There are however laws keeping atheists out office and public life (LINKY).
Maybe that's why they pretend to have some flimsy belief?

Discrimination is keeping someone from doing an unrelated activity because of a belief or lack thereof. Keeping church and state separate is helpful for both.

Nothing is unrelated to God. Discrimination is forcing homosexuality on people gathered together to try to uphold God's word. Discrimination is teaching present state belief based creation alternative models and disallowing the creation account of God. Etc.

He couldn't even maintain an association with a nominal 'christian' group. Hardly a poster child of white hot faith in God.

So please, if you think you are discriminated against, maybe you should visit the U.S. sometime. We love Christians. It's the people who aren't Christian we seem to have a problem with.
You seem to be serious. FYI the US is not a Christian country, and has policies as anti God as almost any country on earth, far as I can see.

Their WOMD, and wars are not the marks of believers.
