So I was thinking about this last night. Why exactly do you think the sacrifices needed to be burned. They had already been killed before being placed on the altar. Since the penalty for sin is death, wouldn't that have been taken care of by simply slaughtering the animal?

Your input is appreciated. I have a theory but I'd like to see what you guys have to say first.

Im not sure, but I guess killing was one step, the smell of the burn offering pleased the Lord (so I have read somewhere in the bible), besides the offerings could have been eaten by somebody or something and the offering would have been lessened I guess,,

looking forward to hearing your opinion!

The sacrifices were the only inheritances of the Levites. The meat offerings was barbequed well done, primarily for the Levite to feast on.

1 “The priests, the Levites—all the tribe of Levi—shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and His portion.
2 Therefore they shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the LORD is their inheritance, as He said to them.

3 “And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it is bull or sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.
4 The firstfruits of your grain and your new wine and your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, you shall give him.
5 For the LORD your God has chosen him out of all your tribes to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons forever.
6 “So if a Levite comes from any of your gates, from where he dwells among all Israel, and comes with all the desire of his mind to the place which the LORD chooses,
7 then he may serve in the name of the LORD his God as all his brethren the Levites do, who stand there before the LORD.
8 They shall have equal portions to eat, besides what comes from the sale of his inheritance.

Jos 13:14Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire [are] their inheritance, as he said unto them.

1Cr 9:13Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live [of the things] of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

"All burnt-offerings of the sanctuary were burned upon the brazen altar. The fire was kindled by the Lord Himself, (Lev. 9:24) and was kept burning continually. It was never to go out. (Lev. 6:13) The fire which destroys all sin from the earth, like the fire on the brazen altar, will come down from God out of heaven, and will not be quenched as long as there is any sin to be consumed. (Rev. 20:9, Mark 9:43-48)
The entire body of the whole burnt-offering and portions of various offerings were burned upon this brazen altar. It consumed that which typified sin; and as the fires were continually burning, it has been called "the altar of continual atonement." Sin separates man from God, (Isa. 59:2) and all sin must be put away before the sinner can be at-one-ment with God. Therefore the work done upon this altar was a symbol of the final destruction of sin, which will be necessary before the redeemed can enjoy their eternal inheritance. Paul referred, to this altar as a type of Christ. (Heb. 13:10) All the work connected with the altar of burnt-offering typified the work connected with the destruction of sin,–a work which Christ alone can do. The Father has delivered into the hands of His Son the final destruction of sin and sinners. (Ps. 2:7-9)"
- The Cross and its Shadow by Stephen Haskell

I tend to agree with his conclusion about it representing the destruction of sin and the wicked by fire.

That makes two of us. This is excatly what I was thinking, well in so many words
What I was also considering is how the sacrifices for sin, with them being consumed and what not, does away with the idea that sinners will burn forever. Just like the sin sacrifices were totally consumed by fire, so shall the wicked be completely consumed by the fire from heaven which God will call down.
