Who taught them to breathe air?
Do they really know that if they didn't breathe air they will die?​

Who taught them to breathe air?

Breathing is not an acquired skill, but controlled by specialized centres in the brainstem, which automatically regulate the rate and depth of breathing depending on the body’s needs at any time. When carbon dioxide levels increase in the blood, it reacts with the water in blood, producing carbonic acid. Lactic acid produced by anaerobic respiration during exercise also lowers pH. The drop in the blood's pH stimulates chemoreceptors in the carotid and aortic bodies in the blood system to send nerve impulses to the respiration centre in the medulla oblongata and pons in the brain. These, in turn send nerve impulses through the phrenic and thoracic nerves to the diaphragm.

Of course, human beings can learn to consciously control their breathing - within limits - but that's got nothing to do with reptiles "learning" to breathe.

About the turtles, I see what you mean, I would have answered, instinct, pure animal instict, about the same as us humans, but the difference is we humans are not meant to live our lives as animals, you know, law of the jungle. So I think you had a nice thought in your thread, imo,

Asking how an organism manages to sustain itself without being taught beforehand is actually quite commendable - provided that it's not intended as a mere rhethorical question, but actually born of a desire to understand the natural world a little better.

Sadly, you can spot the "GODDIDIT!" long before it's even voiced, and nothing stifles curiosity more than the (mistaken) belief that you already have the answer, and that answer essentially boils down to "it's supernatural".

Oh, sure, we adore fluffy little mammals with all those child-like characteristics: they kindle our instinct to nurture and protect.
But no other species has managed to turn its potential prey into a mass-produced object that's basically treated as if it was inanimate.
The horrors of factory farming are well-known, and yet our supermarkets are filled to the brim with meat products that have been produced under those conditions - and most members of our "superior" species wouldn't waste a thought on that.

Now, I'm not one of those crazy vegans who insist that Man is a herbivore by nature. That's nonsense. I think it's perfectly okay to kill other animals for food - but if you do, at least treat them with the respect owed to another living being.

I eat meat too, but I am careful as to the quality, though it is not so easy always, I bought by mistake once some of that "pumped up" beef, I had to throw it away, and I agree, we are to treat animals kindly.
Looks like humans can be more cruel in behaviour than animals.
